my pops!

he was one crazy sonufabitch and personified the kind of attitude this entire world needs to embrace.... plus he knew the value of a beer or six...

close second (a tie), Mike Stubley, a former boss/geologist... that guy knew his music and his tectonic structures.... and my Masters' supervisor... the dude defected from East Berlin, did his MSc in the Himalayas, trekked thru vietnam and spent some time on a French plantation in a rather coppola sort of way, met his wife on a ship from japan to san fran while learning judo and ping pong manuevers from his new japanese buddies...

close third, santa claus... met him in a mall once and just haven't been able to figure out how he does what he does...

Garth was the first that came to mind for me as well. You want to talk to him about Woodstock and Watkins Glen but you also want to really get what he's on about which is sometimes stuff like old time CBC radio programs like the Happy Gang and The Craigs. Stuff we'd know nothing about but he's not just into it for nostalgia he likes the rate of speech and the whole reaching out across the prairies. Priceless hearing Garth in his gravelly voice sing the Happy Gang theme song- he can be really light hearted and upbeat surprisingly.

THE most interesting person I've ever met would have to be a man named George Swinimer. I met him while I was on the road with the Round the World Challenge.

George grew up in Africa as the son of a diplomat. He went to a high school with a bunch of other diplomats and spoke often about how there were no cliques or discrimination because everyone was an outsider.

He had the most fabulous stories. He'd been to every corner of the earth and was just such an amazing person. He was going to write a book about his experiences - so keep your eyes opne! Typing this has made me want to try to find him again.

Thank Ms. Hux, you've just brought back some fabulous memories.

Hey KevO,

The Round the World Challenge was a big fundraising trip for a guy named Mike Nemesvary. He was a world class freestyle skier who broke his back while practicing and became a quadraplegic. He drove a special truck around the world to raise money for spinal research and rehabilitation.

I was the Media Relations Specialist for the Canadian leg - Vancouver through to Ottawa. Lots of fun, lots of challenges.

You ever heard of this one?

Well, since the Queen's grads are all coming out of the woodwork, I better say Ned Franks, politics prof, and all around Crazy Genius!

It's great to be able to get drunk enough with a prof to dicuss the merits of LSD legalization.. [smile]

Wilf Lalonde. One of the well known brainiacs of Object Oriented programing.

He is pretty looney, but super intelligent. He taught me in University and I TAed for him, and also worked for him. He would actually (no joke) talk to a bunch of us about how he was going to invent a time machine. I used to infuriate him by saying, "If you are going to invent one, then come back here to this time right now when you do and say hello."

As strange as he was, he was so intelligent. When I was doing my thesis, I was also TAing for him at Carleton. I asked him a question about my thesis one day in his office. He said something really strange and bizarre, and I basically said " uh, okay...". About 3 months later I figured out what he was talking about when I ran into a problem he predicted I would have.

Another thing about this guy was his memory. Super smart, and could remember anything computer related. But, I took 3 classes from him, TAed for him, worked for him and he barely knew who I was.

Les Claypool and Rob Derhak are at the top of my list as most interesting. They’re also two of my favorite musicians so that’s a bonus too. Chatted with Les about playing with Weir, who had just joined Claypool’s set for a few tunes. Shared some nuggs, hit the stage and watched him walk into the middle of Ratdog’s, The Other One. His personality matches his stage antics, very polite and sincere too.

Rob shared stories from the road while we drank some Scotch that a fan from oversees gave him. He’s friggin hilarious. Can’t repeat what was said.

despite their usual reputation, the academics are winning today. so many have chosen profs as the most interesting people they have ever met. and i would have to agree with the majority. constantine, chairman of the art dept as well as my teacher, mentor and friend. he was and always will be opinionated and brilliant, and probably the person who has influenced me most in my own work and thought and life.

I had a prof in university (Queen's, mid-80s) named Jim Whitley who was pretty interesting. His approach to math was a joy to behold, and he left a lasting impression on those of us who had him. He not only taught math, he taught teaching math (which is a whole other matter); one of my regrets is that I was too busy in 4th year to do the marking for his course in teaching math.

Aloha,

Brad

Speaking of Queen's, I found my English prof, Charles Pullen, for the course, " Restoration & The 18th Century ", to be one very funny and interesting character. His classes were always informative and thought-provoking, but always hilarious. I hope he's alive and well, but he was aging even then.

My friend, Anthony Monaco.

He is definately interesting, not to mention a sweet dude.

I'm with you on that one MarcO. I'm excited to be working on a project with Anthony. His spirituality inspires me to look deeper within myself. He's got such a positive vibe.
