Akron
I was listening to a C.B.C. show the other day and the call-in question was "What is the best movie you've seen in the past year"? This is indeed a rather cliche question, however it really beggs to be pondered from time to time. I had forgotten about the show as well as the question until after just now finishing viewing two fantastic films. First was "Sling Blade". Its the one written, produced, and starring Billy Bob Thornton. I had seen it a couple of times before, and have to say its one of the greats. It has a beautiful soundtrack provided by Daniel Lanois, as well as a fantastic performance by Dwight Yokam (believe it or not). The other one that I highly recommend is the Muhhamad Ali documentary "When we were Kings". It is exremly intense, also with killer soundtrack, James Brown, B.B. King, Spinners and other 70's funk/blues demons. So, seen any good ones lately?
moe.ron
Well, first of all I'll give the disclaimer that I don't really watch that many movies, and secondly, I am a little bias on this one, but my vote goes to orange county....where else do I get to see jack black in his underwear? Tonberry
Ah, now's my chance to shine. ANYTHING by the Coen Brothers is pure gold. Their two newest ones are "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" and "The Man Who Wasn't There". Both were good, (Though I liked "Man Who Wasn't There" a lot better.) If you wanna try onbe of their older ones, I'd reccomend: "Blood Simple" if you're into suspense, and "The Big Lebowski" if you're into Comedy. All right, also, a really cool flick called "Momento" is out there, at large. It's pretty sweet. Brilliant concept. If you're into campy, crazy old stuff, check out the original Batman movie. Not the Michael Keaton / Jack Nicholson one, I'm talking the Adam West / Burt Ward one... Incredible. That's all I can tell you. Incredible. There's a movie called "Ravenous" out there. It's pretty bizarre, but I liked it. It's got Robert Carlyle and Guy Pearce, and it's very unknown, but pretty good. I also really like "Magnolia", but a lot of people don't, so... Well... Careful. It's long, but lovely. I could (And will) talk movies all day, if anyone cares to...
Akron
Kudos to the Cohen Brothers!! I must add "Barton Fink" with John Turturo and John Goodman as well as "Raising Arizona" to their best. Ravenous was good (and nasty)!!
TheSloth
Yeah, I thought "Momento" was a killer movie. If you end up liking it you should also check out "Following". Its by the same guy (Christopher Nolan) and I thought it was almost as good as "Momento"
Ms.Huxtable
What a timely thread. I (being a newly appointed computer owner/geek) have been downloading a bunch of movies this weekend. My first, must-haves were four Cohen brothers movies, Usual Suspects, Fight Club, Untouchables and A Clockwork Orange. Then I went for stuff I have yet to view. Vanilla Sky, I am Sam and Blow. I also grabbed the third season of the Sopranos and about 15 episodes of the Family Guy, but I guess they don't qualify as a movies. Good still. I'm not really sure when I'll have time to watch all of this, but the point is that I have it. I love my computer!!!
zimmerman
after working at a video store (Queen Video), I'd have to recommend one movie. Make no mistake about it, HEAVYWEIGHTS is one of The funniest and unexpected, films to come out of the 90's. It stars Ben Stiller and a bunch of fat kids. 'nuff said. As for recent films, I thought Storrytelling by Tod Solonds (guy who directed Happiness) was an absolutely treat to watch (despite that one scene where the prof asks his student to scream out ... arcane
I saw Lord of the Rings yesterday. As in the books, with the exception of the hobbits and the Shire, everything is larger than life. It's as it should be, and all is right with the world. My companion, who hadn't read the books, was puzzled by the ending. "That's *it*??" Guess I know what to get him for his birthday.Good Movie Not Of This Year: Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead
