Born on January 10, 1954 in Boston, Mike Stern is a guitarist of remarkable technical and improvisational proficiency who rose to fame playing in a pair of Miles Davis' bands. Stern is comfortable in a wide range of styles including bebop, hard bop, fusion and jazz-rock. Stern attended Berklee in the early '70s, where he studied with Pat Metheny and Mick Goodrick. Metheny recommended him for a vacancy with Blood, Sweat & Tears. He later worked with Billy Cobham, then joined Miles Davis' band in 1981. Stern stayed with him two years, then played with Jaco Pastorius' Word Of Mouth band. He later toured with Miles Davis again, played with Steps Ahead, and worked in bands led by Mike Brecker and Harvie Swartz, among many others. A dynamic soloist, thoughtful accompanist and strong composer, Stern made his recording debut as leader in 1985. His latest release on Atlantic Records is the Grammy-nominated Voices.
