secondtube
Uh oh, looks like Petey's in some trouble. quote: In the lengthy statement, Townshend said he had paid to enter an Internet site advertising child pornography "purely to see what was there" as research to fight the crime. quote: I am not a pedophile. I think pedophilia is appalling," he said in the statement which was distributed by a woman to reporters outside his home in Richmond, south London. "On one occasion I used a credit card to enter a site advertising child porn. I did this purely to see what was there," he said. Jaimoe
I think this is bullshit. I'd be shocked if Townshend was arrested. Until proven guilty, I believe Pete when he says he's researching child abuse; and even if Pete were an abuser ( and I don't think he is ), I don't think he's stupid enough to surf the net to fullfill his desires. He ain't Garry Glitter. Anyone who's followed his career knows that Pete donates a lot of time, talent and money in the aid of abused kids. For example, check out the benefit live album: Pete Townshend Live: A Benefit For Maryville Academy. This cd/concert was part of a series of charity concerts staged to help fund the Marysville Academy - a home which provides a safe, secure and stable environment for abused children. Don't convict Pete so quickly before he has his say; and know something about his charity work and background before making stupid and insensitive jokes. And another thing: making jokes about child abuse isn't funny. I didn't laugh when Garry Glitter was arrested and I didn't crack un-wise when they finally busted Billy Preston. And in a worse-case scenario, if Pete is guilty, it'll be a sad day for all the people he's helped over the years - both with his music and with his charity contributions. secondtube
quote: Anyone who's followed his career knows that Pete donates a lot of time, talent and money in the aid of abused kids. Didn't Micheal Jackson do the same? As did peewee herman, who also set up a child relief fund. I love the Who, just what he did, 'even for research' seems a little scarey. Although no more so than Mick Jagger in Tights.
Jaimoe
... and people who are usually guilty of such things certainly wouldn't try to explain themselves by issuing statements to the media. The accused generally issue denial statements with the help of lawyers. Michael Jackson is a creep ( kids or no kids )and Paul Reubens... well, it remains to be seen what happens to that guy - although, he is guilty of being a pervert that's for sure. Still, there is no place for jokes in this matter. All matters regarding this makes me sad, sick and angry.
h
i havent read the story yet, but i would tend to believe pete first. i once sent a kiddy type photo of a younger japanese girl (looked like 13 or 14 to me) to a few friends asking if they thought it was kiddy porn and whether they thought i should report the site to the authorities - thinking back now, i think i could very well have gotten into trouble with that and with the way media jumps now with their misleading headlines and slanted reporting - if i was famous i'd probably be sunk

MarcO
I sincerely hope they don't find any more than what he has admitted to.... I can handle rock stars indulging in drugged out gangbangs or whatever makes them feel cool - in fact, those things I encourage them to do - but child porn is apalling and I would hope a man of Townsend's intelligence and sensitivity would know better. But then the question would become, what is it that leads people to look at child porn? Victim or the crime? It's a big issue.
Mr. Musicface
Wow, this is a total "life-imitates-art" moment! Wasn't part of the plot of "PsychoDerelict" that a Pete Townshend-ish type of character gets into a situation where he's assused of having a relationship with a minor? For my part I'm with Jaimoe, particularly since this is a topic he's written about in the past and supported charitably. We should all wait to see how this plays out and not judge the man until more facts are in. My two-cents. Peace, Mr. M.
Booche
If he is so against child pornography, why did he support this online company and pay for those images? He supported sick and perverted business. That is against the law, and he should be punished. I dont care what his motives were.
reba
remember that the media perverts facts to sensationalize a story to sell more copy or get more viewers. our opinions are based on this information that is twisted by capitalism. the abuse of children is wrong....that i know. as to pete's guilt or innocence or his reasons......who the hell knows. secondtube
uh oh. cops just found pics that townsend has either "made" or has "taken himself". uh oh. this was from CNN and BBC. It kills me to say this, but I think he's a pedophile. If he wanted to explore or investigate feelings of possible previous abuse, he should have done it with a therapist or through a police contact. He went to a web site where one of the main activities is to distribute child porn. I lost respect for one of my favorite musicians. It'll certainly make me thing differently when listening to Tommy. I'm You Wickid Uncle Ernie, and you'll never see or hear me, as i fiddle about, fiddle about. I don't pray much...but I pray that they find a way to prove his ridiculous story. please
MarcO
from cnn.com: "British police have arrested 1,300 people, including a judge, magistrates, dentists, hospital consultants and a deputy school headmaster, as part of Operation Ore, a crackdown on people who view child pornography on the Internet. Fifty police officers also have been arrested, and eight of them have been charged with offenses." Pretty sad.
Rob Not Bob
Did you see this on the TV? The most recent updates from the BBC and CNN websites (from less than half an hour ago, in CNN's case), make no mention of police having found anything, just that he was released after questioning. CharlieDon'tSurf
yeah, that's the thing... people see/read about someone's alleged involvement in something or another and the "GUILTY" stamp immediately comes out (like Homer's harassment charge) - people's lives have been ruined because of erroneous charges - actually, because of the 'mob' reaction against the charges, assuming that guilt comes hand in hand with media coverage if pete is guilty, fine... he's a freak and he'll get what he deserves... if he's innocent, fine... he's a freak and he'll get what he deserves
kurly
He was charged with possession, manufacturing and distributing child porn - some how i don't think all these charges will stand. As well, u can believe it or not (call me naive but I buy it - sort of) but he claims that this was all done for research for his book. As he was abused (he claims sexually, at this time) as a child, it would seem, almost a plausible explaination, if we all believe that Pete would delve this deeply into something to generate understanding for what happened to him as a child. arcane
Yes, that's right, we should never doubt the police or other authorities. Judges are obviously redundant--get them off the public payroll.
