h
Seems to be on the up and up there are Amnesty International links all over this thing... Does this type of thing really still happen? by stoning no less... ****************** Hope we may be able to do something about this. Please find the web link (at the bottom of the email ) to sign a petition to the Nigerian President regarding the imminent execution (stoned to death) of Amina Lawal. Her crime - having a child out of marraige. Her lawyers have 30 days to petition the Supreme Court. It will take one minute to sign. Please pass this on to all your contacts. Attached is the link to the Amnesty International site of which on the right hand side there is a letter to the Nigerian president that you can sign. She has 30 days to appeal against her sentence. It takes literally less than a minute. "We hereby uphold the judgment of the (lower) Bakori court that decreed that you be sentenced to death by stoning," the president of the Funtua appeal court told the woman, Amina Lawal 30, on Monday Aug 19, 2002. The sentence was passed on Amina in March 2002 for having a child outside marriage. The judge ruled that 30-year-old Amina Lawal will be executed once she has weaned her eight-month-old daughter. The Funtua court granted defence lawyers 30 days to appeal, which they have said they will do. Amina Lawal was escorted away in tears by her lawyers who have promised to challenge the decision all the way to the Supreme court. ...... http://www.mertonai.org/amina/OpenLetter.htm

bradm
quote:Originally posted by Ms.Huxtable: That sucks! Why on Earth would parents want their daughters circumsized? One usual justification is that, with drastically reduced sexual pleasure*, the woman won't have any temptation to have extra-marital affairs/sex. Slightly misanthropically, Brad * Female circumcision usually involves removal of at least the clitoris.
Ms.Huxtable
Jesus This is reminding my of a friend of mine (she's older about 50 or so, we met at an old job of mine). She is from the middle east. She shocked the hell out of me by opening up about her sex life one day. She says that her husband has NEVER seen her naked (they have 5 children). They have sex between sheets and she wears clothes that cover everything but her head. I said "You are in Canada now and have been for years, you are an open-minded woman who loves your husband. Why don't you greet him as he comes home from work one day, buck naked and bent over a chair!" She didn't go for it, but I know she thinks about it all the time. But seriously, it sickens me that women in this day and age are still treated this way and that women are still thought of as dirty sluts for having sex or even sexual thoughts. I thought the world was changing. Perhaps it's just North America. Perhaps not even that.
Phunky Cauldron
This is just an awful story. Although it might just be a rumour, I thought that I'd heard that the woman involved was raped and that was the reason for having a child out of wedlock. Can anybody confirm or deny this? "Still" is a bit too universal for my tastes. Circumcise girls? I still can't figure out why we circumcise so many boys. (And no, I have no esthetic preference.) It just seems needless. Maddak
Phunky Cauldron, I think the case you're refering to may actually be one that's a few years old. A couple years back a woman was gang raped and got pregnant. They never punished any of the men, but she was stoned to death shortly after weening her child as well. So somehow SHE'S the dirty one, like she really wanted to get raped, way deep down in side... that crap makes me sick. And unfortunately I know of echoes of that type of thought in our own cultures.... a woman I know, she was raped at a party when she was about 16 (so this is about 13 years ago) she actually pressed charges, went to court... in the courtroom the judge called her up to his bench, he then proceded to draw a circle on a slip of paper, put his hand on the corner and slid the paper back and forth on the surface of the bench, challening her to try and "stick her finger in that". That really sickens me that someone like that could have had the power of determining justice.

Either way, I'd appreciate getting the name of the judge.
