Another One Bites the Dust

Everyone send out a big "BOOOOO" to Maxwells for ceasing their live music Thursday nights (and subsequently cancelling our October 3rd gig).

Although Maxwell's is on Elgin Street and is known for being a "cougar bar", the venue is nice and treats bands pretty good. When we last played there the place had a good crowd full of people who aren't regulars to our scene, who enjoyed what they saw and liked being exposed to something new and unexpected. The room sounded good and had lots of space for us to play.

Kinda sucks that the live music thing didn't work out for them.

The stupid part is that upstairs at Maxwell's (which is where the band plays) is empty until about 11pm, when the DJ starts up. They could put a band in there on an off night, just give 'em the door money (IIRC, Dr. H charged $3 when they played there a while back), and rake in a fair bit at the bar.

I wish the bars that are complaining about the no-smoking bylaw would start to find other ways to attract people, live music being one of them.

But I'm not bitter. OK, maybe I am...

Aloha,

Brad

...."Top 40 hits hosted by Casey Casem".....

....funny thing, on the way back from Kingston yesterday, we're flicking through the radio stations, when we hear the end of "Touch of Grey" and who comes on, but none other than Casey Casem (!).."that was the Grateful Dead, from 1987, with Touch of Grey..." Hilarious!!!

Well, another one bites the dust, if anyone has any ideas of any potential gigs, we're having a hard time, trying to find new venues and stuff, but it ain't easy.....it's really too bad there's a not a local jam-band promotor doing gigs... [Frown][Frown][Frown][Frown][Mad][Frown][Frown][Frown] sorry, it's monday....

Another thing I like about the Dominion is the quality of their beer: they often have things like KLB Nut Brown on tap, which you wouldn't expect from the look of the place.

IIRC, last Hallowe'en they had a three-up show, with nero, TMNS, and, IIRC, Big Jeezus Truck*, so they might go for some jam/groove music.

Aloha,

Brad

* And didn't Lance of the Whipping Post do the sound?

That's right BradM. Lance was there doing sound (it was good to see him, has anyone seen him lately or know what he's been up to?).

The Dominion is a place I may look into actually. It is a bit of a dive, but sometimes those become pretty comfortable places after a few good parties have been held there. Good, cheap beer is a plus, the location is a plus... so the only negative I can think of is all the leather-clad, stud wearing regulars. Punks are people too though right?

What's the worse thing you think they'll toss at us when we start singing "Switzerland's" chorus...

"We're tripping on luck and candy canes..." [Wink][Frown]

I e-mailed Dr. H about another long-shot possibility: Jack Feeney's. It's at 1355 Richmond Rd. (spitting distance to the Lincoln Fields OC Transpo station). It's a sports-bar/roadhouse kind of place, but they host a blues jam on Thursdays, so they're not openly rejective of music. Their phone # is 820-1856; I don't think they have any web presence.

It also has one big advantage: it's crawling distance to BradLand. [big Grin]

If you want, I'll try and drop by in the next couple of days and see how open they are to bands.

Aloha,

Brad

The Dominion is a great place!! I love the eclectic crowd there. I have never had a problem there ever.

The word on the street is that Lance has come into some $$$$ and is enjoying life. Lucky duck!!

You guys should check out The Black Sheep, it is such a great venue. I know it is a little out of the way...but I hear your bass player has a van!!!

Funky Presidents...YES!! I used to see all their shows at the Rainbow. Sadly Cam (the key boardist and band leader - and key boardist for Tony D) went back to Australia last year. He joined the military there so my guess is that he won't be returning anytime soon. They were so much fun while they lasted.....

Funky P's had 2 guitar players. I know the one with long black curly hair - if that's the one you mean. His name is Richard Vernon - he is really good. He plays for an Ottawa Band called Rude Boy. You should check them out.

Hammerheads have been around for years... They usually put on a good show - a real drinking fest.

one night, we were playing there in a really bad rock band, and downstairs had this celeberity dancer/porn star I think her name was stacy staxx ...hilarious, she actually beat someone down with her boobs.. hilarious....I think we have a photo somewhere.
