CyberHippie
Is that the same "Cake" responsible for "Fashion Nugget"? If so, good to hear that people dig them. I was just listening to that album the other day for the first time in years. I really dig it, it got a really poor review on AMG and a lot of people seemed to dislike them."The Distance" was the only reason Fashion Nugget went platinum, because the remainder of the album is too collegiate and arcane for mainstream music tastes. It isn't because it's obscure or intellectual — it's because the band is smirking. An "ironic" cover of Gloria Gaynor's "I Will Survive" is the key to the album, sending the signal that Cake consider themselves above everyone else, and nothing is too insignificant to make fun of. And that wouldn't necessarily have been a problem if they had the wit or musical skills which would make their music either funny or listenable. Instead, they wallow in sophomoric jokes which rely on self-consciously elaborate wordplay. Occasionally, their blend of collegiate musical styles — funk, hip-hop, alternative rock — makes the music easy to digest in small doses, such as "The Distance," but it isn't varied enough to prevent the album from becoming tedious I've heard other people make similar comments... I don't really get it, I think it's a great fusion of music styles and there are some infectious songs.

Jaimoe
(...counting the seconds until Jaimoe realizes the Tea Party headlines Blues Fest...) What? The Tea Party better the blues in almost every way. I'm thrilled to see that they don't have another real blues band scheduled on their bill too. Oh ya, I should tell you that I'm loading a shotgun right now and driving over to Jeff Martin's place. I'll show him some Muddy Waters fucking blues!!! TimmyB
I'm so looking forward to the Theatre Stage on Saturday the 17th! Anybody out there that loves the Byrds, or the Eagles and obviously Gram Parsons should attend this show. Chris Hillman is the original bassist with the Byrds and stayed with the band until Parsons convinced Hillman to leave to create The Flying Burrito Brothers. After Hillman left the Burrito's he worked with Stephen Stills group called Manassas. Hillman also worked with another member of Buffalo Springfield (there was a lot of inbreeding in this genre) by the way of Richie Furay in the Souther-Hillman-Furay Band in 1974. Also did work on and off again with former Byrd members like McGuinn-Clark-Hillman and went on in the eighties to form the Dessert Rose Band. Hillman's recent work has mostly been with Herb Pedderson. Bernie Leadon after working briefly with Dillard and Clark (Clark as in Gene Clark another original Byrd. The inbreeding continues) joined The Flying Burrito Brothers for their second album in 1970 called 'Burrito Deluxe' (also with Michael Clarke another originial Byrd!), which was the last with Parsons. After which Leadon started the Eagles with Don Henley, Glenn Frey and Randy Meisner and stayed until their 1975 album 'One Of These Nights'. Leadon has not done too much other than a couple solo albums and session work (most recently with The Jayhawks on their last album 'Rainy Day Music') since his departure from the Eagles. Leadon does have a new album out and will be touring with Dave Kemper on drums (former Jerry Garcia Band, and Bob Dylan drummer). Now this whole day of music you will get Gram Parson songs (obviously since there's a tribute to him), but you will also more than likely get songs by The Flying Burrito Brothers, The Byrds, The Eagles, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Dillard & Clark, and some country and bluegrass classics. I think it will end up being the highlight of my summer as far as shows go. For those of you who have seen The Rolling Stones 'Gimme Shelter' and/or the film about the Grateful Dead with many others on their train ride through Canada in 1970 entitled 'Festival Express' the Flying Burrito Brothers are in both films.
