The Grateful Dead are The Best Band Ever!!!!!!

and the Who??

ya, they have really had alot of influence on culture, politics.... my just look at all them whoheads???

Hey Jaimoe,

Are you going to take that statement about U2 sitting down? Come on let us know what you think about The Who vs. The Grateful Dead.

I love both bands. Neither band are really deeply political. The Who had a real connection with youth, albeit one was about fashion. The Dead were about counter-culture and hippies. One was about power, volume, anger, concepts and humour. The other about transcendental jams, expression, freedom and Americana.

Now, Who2 vs The Dead. God help us all!!!!

neither are really deep politically??? I guess I would ask do you mean--they are not directly involved in politics?? Because, in that case I would agree with you.. however, I think the fact that a band that represents one of the most influential counter cultures would = political influence. Remember, in this scene-- whether you like to admit it or not, the Grateful Dead is the chicken that laid the egg.

I agree with that Marco--- in all honesty, there is no real measure of "greatness" as to who is better/greater, its all subjective... You can make an argument for alot of bands... I must say, I have really enjoyed this and the Beatles thread, I like a good debate, I like to learn more about bands, and this has been a good conductor of such activity... interesting to see everyone's alliances, I can only imagine how much all of you love your personal favourite band---Cause man I am completely in love with the Dead.

it's been fun. I mean, arguing about the Beatles vs the Dead is like me trying to decide, which do I love more? air or beer? I need them both.

I still think the Dead's cultural impact was HUGE but limited, whereas the Beatles was simply HUGE, period, but c'est la vie.

I'll just let hamilton bicker with you some more, it's been pretty funny to watch him lose his nut! :: God I'd love to kick him right in the nuts right now.

The Beatles would be the air and the Grateful Dead would be the beer. You need air more than beer, whether you want to believe it or not.

How about the fact that the Dead spearheaded the environmental movement of the late 80s early 90s. Played all sorts of shows for the rainforest action network. Went to very political converences etc.

And what is the board museum thing that Mickey sits on now? Some sort of musical archive type deal in Washington chronicalling all American and folk type music or something. And I already mentioned Barlow's Electronic Frontier Foundation.

That all kicks ass. IMO.

The tape trading community that the Dead spawned was their greatest influence...I'd say there'd be no Instant Live, Etree, BitTorrent or P2P had this not have happened. As for U2 I don't know how they got mixed up in all of this, but Bono's campaigning for Debt Relief sort of stands up better against the Dead doing a Hell's Angels fundraiser. I think the Angels are cool but people are spewing alot of tripe about the Dead having political influence, and that somehow that is a requisite to earning a title that is overtly opinionated?! I don't get it really. Like, you could joke about it or you could be a goof and try and pull out all of your annotated references to prove my opinion sucks?

And I agree The Dead were active in some righteous causes and did indeed kick ass, but I hardly think they "spearheaded" the environmental movement, nor does their one Rainforest benefit concert on September 24, 1988 (MSG, NYC) constitute a seismic cultural shift of awareness towards a dedicated cause, presss conferences in support of that show and all.

I don't want to discount their awareness and the impact this had on the culture that aligned themselves to them but let's be careful not to overdo things.

Mickey Hart is on the board of trustees for the Library of Congress' "American Folklife Center". His website has more info on that. It is non-aligned politically.

And yes, Tim, thank you. Air is more important than beer.

Timmy, you have to realize that your opinion is not worth an atom of an i-o-ta more than anyone else. Keep that in mind, your opinion that and the Beatles are greater is not the universal answer. There are a number of people that believe that the Grateful are the greatest band ever... and that ain't gonna change. ::

this is basically like arguing that Booche is sexier than MarcO... its kind of subjective to taste... I've had more exposure to MarcO in my day, but that makes Booche more mysterious

I'm with guigs, one day The Slip are going to make both The Beatles and The Grateful Dead embarassed they ever called themselves bands (and I heard they dosed during infancy)
