2004: What shows did you see this year?

Didn't see too many shows this year, couldn't afford to go full hog but a few come to mind as being particularly wonderful:

* Phish @ SPAC 6/19 - a beautiful place, beautiful scene (from my perspective) and a kick-ass show, a second set mindfu©k if there ever was one. They played so well at this run, I still can't belive they couldn't hold it together. Ah well, c'est la vie.

* Jonathan Richman @ Lula Lounge, Toronto - heartfelt and warm, funny and thoughtful, this was a performance that made me laugh and made me want to cry at the same time. I don't think I've ever experienced such an intimate display of personality and charm like I saw Mr Richman give to an attentive and appreciative crowd that night. Beautiful. Thanks again for taking me along, Brian, I loved it!

* The Slip @ PJC - just 'cos of the warm glow I had for days afterwards. They really play from the heart and let the music play them, never really wanking away for each other but always focused on the crowd and riding their wave. Of all the "jam"bands that I've ever seen since hopping on this board 4 years ago, these guys are perhaps the ONLY one to make a measurable impact on me. They simply never seem to disappoint.

Jaimoe... do you remember what you thought of c'mon? are you familiar with other ian blurton projects? i really love that guys brand of rock n roll... curious what others think of his stuff... he's in london at CTO next weekend, and i'd encourage anyone who can make it out to do so for some good ole fashion rockin'!

I found 2004 to be a really bad year for going to see shows, mainly because I didn't have any time to see shows. My concert attendance was nearly halved from the previous year due to the stark realization that it is simply impossible to see all the shows I want to see.

Here is a list of shows I did manage to see this year in no particular order:

- The Soundtrack Of Our Lives, Le Nouveau Casino, Paris, France

- Thievery Corporation DJ set, Le Réservoir, Paris, France

- Modest Mouse, Capital Music Hall, Ottawa

- Wilco, Capital Music Hall, Ottawa

- Sonic Youth, Capital Music Hall, Ottawa

- Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, Ottawa Jazzfest

- Soel, Ottawa Jazzfest (that french band that Ollie speaks of)

- Warsaw Village, Ottawa Bluesfest (the weird Polish band that Ollie speaks of)

- Wyclef Jean, Ottawa Bluesfest (horrible)

- Bryan Adams, Ottawa Bluesfest (kinda from far away, and with little to no interest)

- Xavier Rudd, Ottawa Bluefest

- John Pizzarelli, NAC, Ottawa

- My Morning Jacket, The Opera House, Toronto

- Grand Theft Bus

- Jimmy Swift Band

- Burt Neilson Band

- Nero

- A bunch of drunken asses at the 'ol Bouchard place every week-end

Jaimoe: where did you see the White Stripes this year?? They passed through Canada last year, unless you traveled somewhere to go see them, in which case you're a SOB for not inviting me along. ;)

I saw C'mon at the NXNE showcase at the Phoenix, when they opened for the reformed MC5. I really liked C'mon. I think they should be pimped on this website as much as possible.

Ian Blurton produced a band that I rave about called From Fiction. Check out my album review on this site's main page. The From Fiction boys love Ian and have tons of respect for his ear and attitude.

I know that Ian is connected to the production of a few Weakerthans albums, but I don't know that band's music, although I've heard two songs and I like what I've heard.

so far i hate everyone who saw bowie with the spree and my morning jacket.

East coast man its just not fair. If you guys want to see high quality like this you drive an hour or two to toronto or whatnot, the calgary fuggers have got to make the 10 hour cruise to vancouver. although wilco and modest mouse both played here within the last two years. Its kind of becoming a spot on the west coast loop from vancouver to calgary/ edmonton then south to mizoula or salt lake.

Right you are. I saw them last November. A good show, but not for the kiddies. Bless the blues and country.

I had a serious decline in shows this year as well. Moving to the maritimes would be the root of the cause, but I can't tell you how many JSB, Slowcoaster, Fat Jebus, Mellonworks, etc gigs I've seen since April...

Here we go, the hilights of 2004:

- Phish at Great Woods

- Evolve

- Joel Plaskett Emergency

- Vorcza

- The Sadies

- Antibalas

- Moses Mayes

- 3 nights of Nero in November

- Kid Koala and Brothers Past

- Don Ross

Gonna finish the year with a bang though - The Slip NYE in Massachusetts. ::

sucks that you can't have it both ways eh houston! i was singin that same song when i lived in victoria... when i was there, i was happy and i wouldn't have changed it, but i did miss the music like crazy. it is definitely a treat to have good live music happening within a few hours drive.

highlights for my year:

nero - every show i got out to - i have never ever even had an 'okay' time at a nero show, it is always AWESOME at least.

the slip in montreal x 2 - tooooooo much fuuuuuuun!!!!

stephen franke - anyone who comes from victoria is A+ in my books - what a stand up guy - and it was wonderful to see my favourite band from vic reincarnated!!!

the dead [or, for the sloth, 'the other ones'] - at darien lake this summer. my first time seeing them under that moniker, and they played my favourite goddamn dead song [sugaree], as well as bobby doing an acoustic 'blackbird' and closing with 'ripple', holy fack, could this little girl ask for anything more? throw warren haynes into the mix, and FAGGEDABOUDEE!

so, yup. those were my faves. kimock was great i think, but i went a little overboard that show and i don't recall much. allman brothers i miss terribly and i'm making it a goal to catch them next summer.

edit to add: holy mack! i forgot two of my big highlights [which were directly b/c of bouche & ms hux, one way or another] - prince in detroit this summer - WOW!!!!!! and soel, the french band at bluesfest. again - wow!!

:D

Guest Low Roller
- Sonic Youth, Capital Music Hall, Ottawa

Hey Low Roller, how was this show? I missed it and any subsequent talk about it. What did they play?

Honestly, I don't really remember what they played. I'm not very familiar with their catalogue despite the fact that I respect them as a band tremendously. I think they played mostly new tunes from their recent album, however some older tunes did crop up from what I remember.

Sorry for being absolutely no help whatsoever. ::
