The Bluesfest should not be called the bluesfest. That's been pretty well established in the lineups of the last couple of years so I'm not sure why you'd still be shocked Freak by Night? I think AD's bang on...Bigger acts drawing bigger crowds to support the opportunity to bring in smaller, less popular bands and artists.

For every person who thought Taj Mahal should've been on the main stage I could probably find as many who thought the Hip should've been relegated to Lac Leamy..no, not the casino, the bottom of the man-made lake. Because taste is subjective, something that's been said here by many and absorbed by few.

As per the madonna and whatever comments, I just thought it was common knowledge that its a music festival called Bluesfest, not a festival all about blues music. It's changed over the last 15 years. Changed that have made the festival appealing to 200,000 people instead of 20,000. Toronto's (that got canned) looked the exact same in terms of non-blues content.

I have to admit, I much prefer the wide scope of appeal bookings they have adopted in the last 5 years.. i guess since the blues traveler/ james brown year. Some of the choices have obviously made me groan, but theres always another stage or two offering something else. they have a world stage, a punk stage, country stage among tons of others and each stage has relevant and quality music. and i love mapping out choices that are totally different muscially and offer a different experience at each stage.

but, i also think blues are boring. and wouldnt even considering shelling out for a 2 week pass if it was just all blues.. sure I'll take my yearly Tony D dosage. and maybe a tajmahal. Who's the other local blueswoman? her too. but i'd rather enjoy an eclectic array of tunes in a festive, carnival like atmosphere, as opposed to one genre, that appeals to a smaller more lawnchair characterized demographic. flame on! whats in a name anyway. :)

DAVID NELSON BAND!!!!!!!!!!!!! And that's probably the only way I could ever get my friend Bill from California to come to Ottawa.

So...DAVID NELSON BAND!!!!!!!!! I don't think they wanna come to Canada though...I've e-mailed the band in the past and their reply hinted they're afraid of the border.

But anyway...DAVID NELSON BAND!!

Complaining about the name Bluesfest is like people complaining that someone requests a Kleenex, rather than calling it tissue paper.

Sooooooooooo many lower-levelled blues artists are able to come here, because of the main stage acts. THAT is the essence, and allows these artists exposure they would not get. Anyone calling themselves a blues purist without recognizing that all important fact is a moron.

Its all right there above you.

I really couldn't give a sh!t what the festival is called. I've had a blast at it for the last 4 years and really it just keeps getting better. I'm with you monkey man, if it were truly an all-blues festival, I wouldn't be interested in going for more than one night. Instead it has an eclectic mix of performers and a wide range of stages suitable for everyone's interests.

I always look at the initial line-up postings and sigh because I only recognize a couple names on the bill, but every year I catch a dozen acts I've never seen before and am blown away by many of them.

What would you name it Musicface? And why the heck haven't I heard any Seth news lately? I miss you.

my first summer in ottawa can't start soon enough and i am suuuper pumped for bluesfest! i made it to one night of this last summer when i was in town and managed to catch a real neat mix of bands, my hands-down favourite being 'soel' on the blacksheep stage, not necessarily bluesy but definitely wicked. i actually am a big blues fan but give me a festival of great music in the town where i live for two whole weeks, sh!t, what more could a music lover ask for??? bring on the festus. and summer! ::
