Just found out that EZTorrent has been permantly shut down...this is really sh!tty.

Check it out

We're very sorry having to tell you that we had to shut down EZT

forever just a couple of minutes ago.

We got a call from our provider, they had received a few letters

from a couple of lawyers. They requested EZT to be shut down

immediately, otherwise we'd be sued.

As you may imagine, we do not have the funds to fight a battle we

most probably can't win anyway.

We would like to thank everyone here for their contributions to EZT,

one way or the other, for sharing the music, sharing an ideal, for

all your mails, rants, praises...

I'm sorry, I'm still too shocked to write on... maybe later I'll

find some more words or my collegues will do...

To say it with Joan Armatrading:

We had fun, fun, fun, fun

fun, fun, fun, fun

we had fun -- while it lasted...

--"Tall in the Saddle"--

You all take good care!

Yeah, somebody just forwarded me the message. ::

tradersden.org is the place now, I guess

anybody know of any others?

Only problem I have with traders den is they take it way too seriously, wasn't allowed to seed Fat Cats (before they were on archive) because the original source wasn't used to create the files, also Daniel lanois wasn't allowed, although I wasn't given a reason.

I was directed to this site,I haven't d/l anything yet but they have some good stuff on there...

another one is www.purelivegigs.com

The strange thing in this whole fiasco is that a nirvana proshot video torrent is what got the whole thing started.. Universal approached their lawyers who in turn notified the ISP for EZT, rather than approaching EZT directly to have that particular torrent removed. Unfortunately the ISP pulled the plug on EZT, despite one nirvana torrent being specified as the cause. I think the moderators are trying to convince the ISP that it was only that torrent, which is removed, but I don't see the site coming back though it would be nice.

So who's got my metheny recordings?!?! ;o)

bummer - i really liked that site!

they did have alot of non-tradable stuff though, i guess the thought police finally caught up with them.

I don't know about that really, they were no different the etree, traders den (STG) etc.In fact they were pretty strict and removed torrents quickly & regualry that broke the policy of the site.

I guess we can expect etree & traders den to be the next sites to fall...

I believe its bit torrent that is causing all the trouble,I belong to a computer support/help site and like numerous other tech support sites bit torrent is considered an illegal P2P program to them & you will be banned or lose membership for posting about it,in their eyes even though they know that bands are trade friendly bit torrent is used mainly to distribute illegal or copywritten material. The RIAA also feels bit torrent is an illegal P2P program and sadly its not going to chaneg as long as folks keep sharing programs, studio recordings, movies etc.

I feel that some of these bit torrent sites should take the same policy as Internet archive does, without written perimission by the band themselves the music cannot be shared on the site, also Internet Archive has the written permission of said bands on their site for all to see their policy on what is or is not allowed to be shared/traded/seeded whatever.

Might prevent this sorta sh!t happening again..then again thats just my take on the situation.

Hmmm... my perception of EZT's moderating was that they were very very 'laxed. From what I've read, they received plenty of warnings from some nirvana fans, saying that the 'reading torrent' (the one which was mentioned in the letters from lawyers) was proshot (about to be released from universal commercially) should be removed. The response from the moderators was 'thats not up to us, its up to the uploader'.

But of course, there's all sorts of speculation now, conspiracy theories that some unfriendly folks in germany specifically targeted that site (based in germany) for personal reasons.

Regardless, I have to agree with you greg, that pressure from big names like universal and the RIAA are just trying to scare ISPs.. it'll reach a point where no one wants to host sites involved in BT.

Its a shame their scare tactics are working, 'cause no one wants to be up against a giant like universal in a legal battle that they are likely to lose.

when i first found out about bittorrent i was totally amazed by it. functional, fast, and freaky. as it's emerged into popular awareness, i'm just waiting for the BT world to become as polluted as kazaa.

i read recently that BT accounted for 1/3 of all internet traffic.

holey!

does anyone else worry that it works through Internet Exploiter? I've always wondered how long it would take for a wiry hacker to figure out a way of compromising bittorrenting computers...

Your more in the know on this then I am bro,so its most likely what happened,I do know that they were quick on alot of torrents though.I seeded some Lanois last fall and one of the shows had some promo material on it,now I had gotten it from "Stateless" (U2 torrent site) so I didnt think that perhaps the promo material would be off limits, anyway the torrent wasn't up 2 minutes when it got yanked,I was able to seed the show later minus the promo material but they were really quick & very detailed to why it wasn't allowed.

Sounds like perhaps a bad lack of judgement by an admin or admins on there, probally would have been better off just pulling it until they knew 100% what the situation is/was (always the best policy I believe).

I would tend to believe what your saying happened here,I heard it was a Black Crowes video but it didnt make sense to me,being that the Nirvana video is being released makes a whole world more of sense.

Cheers

Not really, I have superb protection on my computers (IMHO),if you configure your system, firwall & router properly as well forward the correct ports, throttle the amount of peers you connect to etc I don't see it being any easier then it already is for them to hack your system.

Although, like any download,if the files are already infected and you download it then you could be screwed, but this can go for anything.I have my downloads scanned before they finish, part of my firewall/anti-virus protocol.

If you don't properly protect your system then its sorta your own fault in my opinion if you get hit...then again this is only my take on it,although I have downloaded hundreds (maybe a thousand or more even??)torrents and have yet to ever have anything bad occur other then picking a poor quality recording that I waited five days to finish.

Here's a post from the EZT mod a couple days ago:

--------------------------

Howdy again, folks.

The fax just came in a couple of minutes ago.

The offender was torrent # 30630, NIRVANA 08/30/1992 Reading Festival

Complete PRO Shot DVD. In particular the title "Smells like Teen

Spirit", rightowner: Universal, claimed through Universal Music GmbH,

Germany, and pro MediaGmbH (exclusive partner of IFPI in Germany).

I'll bring the fax to erwe later.

We'll keep you posted about proceeds!

Take care!

I was under the impression that although EZT was pretty good at removing officially released commercial material, they had the policy that any band who didn't permit taping/trading was allowed on EZT. Bands that did permit taping/trading had any conditions respected (such as no video). As for antivirus/firewall, does anyone have any recommendations for free programs of this nature? I'm currently using Avast, Adaware, and the WinXP firewall.

Can't help you with a free program,I find you get what you pay for when it comes to firewall/antivirus programs.

I use Zone Alarm Security Suite V.5.1.011.000 along with Adware 6 Professinal and a Linksys WRT54G Wireless-G Broadband router.I do have the option turning on Norton Anti virus and turning off ZA's if I want also.

AVG Antivirus and Kerio Firewall have been working good for me... no crashes, virus' get caught (AVG scans your e-mail as well) and the different online detection sites say I'm well covered

[edit to add: I would feel more comfortable with the greater control a paid-for antivirus/firewall offer but these seem to have been doing the trick for the past 6 months]

[recommend you grab SpyBot - Search and Destroy to pick up what AdAware doesn't... cheers]

Thanks for the offer, that's quite a list you've got there. I'm afraid I've got nothing to offer you though, I've only got a handful of shows and you've already got them. Do you have 99-11-11 by any chance? It was my one and only attended Dylan show and it'd be nice to have a copy.
