Best Album Closers

Rob Not Bob

Recommended Posts

In the movie High Fidelity, the characters have a discussion on the all time best Track One, Side One songs ... I was pondering the opposite of that, some of the all time great last tracks on albums. By this I mean not just great songs that happened to be the last ones on the album, but great studio album closers, ones that finished the album off in style. Here are a few that spring to my mind, let me know what your picks are :

Soul Survivor - Exile On Main Street - The Rolling Stones

A Day In The Life - Sgt. Pepper - The Beatles (of course!)

When The Levee Breaks - Fourth Album - Led Zeppelin

Come On - Urban Hymns - The Verve

Eclipse - Dark Side Of The Moon - Pink Floyd

O, Sweet Nuthin' - Loaded - Velvet Underground

Won't Get Fooled Again - Who's Next - The Who

Starless - Red - King Crimson

And This Day - Hex Enduction Hour - The Fall

For Your Pleasure - For Your Pleasure - Roxy Music

It - The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway - Genesis

Inner City Blues - What's Goin' On - Marvin Gaye

I Remember Nothing - Unknown Pleasures - Joy Division

Get Out Of My House - The Dreaming - Kate Bush

Highlands - Time Out Of Mind - Bob Dylan

Neverland - Marbles - Marillion

Purple Rain - Purple Rain - Prince and the Revolution

Lost And Found - Over - Peter Hammill

Chalkhills And Children - Oranges And Lemons - XTC

How about

The End/Her Majesty - The Beatles, Abbey Road

Great one ... when I was first thinking of this, I was limiting myself to one per artist, but the Beatles had lots of great closing tracks ... Tomorrow Never Knows from Revolver, Good Night from the White Album, Get Back from Let It Be ... if they had ever put Hey Jude on an actual album, it would have been the last track :)

  • Diamond Dust - Jeff Beck - Blow By Blow
  • Flamenco Sketches - Miles Davis - Kind Of Blue
  • Psalm - John Coltrane - A Love Supreme (this is fudging a bit, as Psalm isn't its own track: ALS is four movements, but the last two, even on the CD, are indexed as one track)
  • Stairway To Heaven - Frank Zappa - The Best Band You Never Heard In Your Life

Aloha,

Brad

Well, it's sort of the second last song on the album, but the last song is just a reprise, so I'd have to go with:

4'33" off "Monkey Do" by Bob Loblaw

Ingenious cover of a song by John Cage, and the [color:purple]sound is fantastic now that it's digitized.

Child Of Vision - Supertramp - Breakfast In America

and the greatest love song of all time:

For Crying Out Loud - Meat Loaf - Bat Out Of Hell

I was lost till you were found

But I never knew how far down

I was falling

Before I reached the bottom

I was cold and you were fire

And I never knew how the pyre

Could be burning

On the edge of the ice field

And the now chilly california wind

Is blowing down our bodies again

And we’re sinking deeper and deeper into the chilly california sand

Oh I know you belong inside my aching heart

And can’t you see my faded levis bursting apart

And don’t you hear me crying:

Oh babe, don’t go

And don’t you hear me screaming:

How was I to know?

I’m in the middle of nowhere

Near the end of the line

But there’s a border to somewhere waiting

And there’s a tankful of time

Oh give me just another moment to see the light of the day

And take me to another land where I don’t have to stay

And I’m gonna need somebody to make me feel like you do

And I will receive somebody with open arms, open eyes,

Open up the sky and let the planet that I love shine through

For crying out loud

You know I love you

For crying out loud

You know I love you

For crying out loud

You know I love you

I was damned and you were saved

And I never knew how enslaved

I was kneeling

In the chains of my master

I could laugh but you could cry

And I never knew just how high

I was flying

Ah, with you right above me

I’m in the middle of nowhere

Near the end of the line

But there’s a border to somewhere waiting

And there’s a tankful of time

Oh give me just another moment to see the light of the day

And take me to another land where I don’t have to stay

And I’m gonna need somebody to make me feel like you do

And I will receive somebody with open arms, open eyes,

Open up the sky and let the planet that I love shine through

For crying out loud

You know I love you

For crying out loud

You know I love your

For crying out loud

You know I love you

For taking in the rain when I’m feeling so dry

For giving me the answers when I’m asking you why

And my oh my

For that I thank you

For taking in the sun when I’m feeling so cold

For giving me a child when my body is old

And don’t you know

For that I need you

For coming to my room when you know I’m alone

For finding me a highway and driving me home

And you gotta know

For that I serve you

For pulling me away when I’m starting to fall

For revving me up when I’m starting to stall

And all in all

For that I want you

For taking and for giving and for playing the game

For praying for my future in the days that remain

Oh lord

For that I hold you

Ah but most of all

For cryin’ out loud

For that I love you

Ah but most of all

For cryin’ out loud

For that I love you

Ah but most of all

For cryin’ out loud

For that I love you

When you’re crying out loud

You know I love you
