CD Baby?

I got some (what I think is) spam via one of the mailing lists I'm (unwittingly, I think) subscribed to, and this one actually seems not bad.

There's an on-line retailer of indie music called CD Baby. For a one-time $35 (US$, presumably), and a $4 cut from each CD sold, they'll give you a dedicated web page, space for clips, etc. You don't need your CDs to even have a barcode, and can even sell labelled CD-Rs.

The spam, however, has a special offer:

Hey everyone,

I've got great news I want to share with all of you.

Galaris.com has partnered with cdbaby.com and for a limited time both CD Baby and Galaris are waiving the set up fee and offering a free web page to sell your music to the world at the two most visited independent musicians sites on the web!! BUT you must mail your cd's before May 31.

Yes, you are reading right the $60 combined fees to have your web page setup at cdbaby.com and galaris.com will be completly waived through May 31.

To take advantage of this offer:

1 - If you're not already a CD Baby member, go to http://cdbaby.net/submit.htm - and sign up.

2 - For every CD you want to sell, click "ADD NEW ALBUM" inside your members login area, and give CD Baby ALL of the information about it.

3 - Mail CD Baby 5 copies of each title before May 31, with a big picture of a smiley-face instead of a $35 check. Yes, you actually have to draw a big smiley face on a piece of paper or they won't waive your $35.

4- AFTER your page is set up at CD Baby - fill out the short form at http://www.galaris.com/cdbabyform.php and we will do the rest. You will get an email from us letting you know where you can find your new web page at Galaris. We will waive the $25 setup fee (no smiley-faces necessary).

Thats it!

Can you hear me now? Thought so!

And of course we didn't forget all of our wonderfull artists that have already been set up at Galaris.com. Since the folks at CD Baby are so awesome they've already created a web page for you at their site. Simply go to cdbaby.com and do a search for your album or name to find your page.

Why are we doing this? For your eternal undying LOVE!

Don't forget to spread the word to as many musicians as you know, and remind them the offer is good through May 31 only.

Yours in music,

Ariel Soudak

It looks like this operation is split between http://www.cdbaby.com which is the store, and http://www.cdbaby.net which is for musicians.

I've never dealt with (either part of) CD Baby, but arcane forwarded me an e-mail a colleague of hers got when he placed an order:

Subject: Keith - Your CD Baby Order!

Keith -

Thanks for your order with CD Baby!

(order details deleted by BradM)

Your CDs have been gently taken from our CD Baby shelves with sterilized contamination-free gloves and placed onto a satin pillow.

A team of 50 employees inspected your CDs and polished them to make sure they were in the best possible condition before mailing.

Our packing specialist from Japan lit a candle and a hush fell over the crowd as he put your CDs into the finest gold-lined box that money can buy.

We all had a wonderful celebration afterwards and the whole party marched down the street to the post office where the entire town of

Portland waved 'Bon Voyage!' to your package, on its way to you, in our private CD Baby jet on this day, Wednesday, April 30th.

I hope you had a wonderful time shopping at CD Baby. We sure did.

Your picture is on our wall as "Customer of the Year". We're all exhausted but can't wait for you to come back to CDBABY.COM!!

Thank you once again,

Derek Sivers, president, CD Baby the little CD store with the best new independent music

I quote the e-mail because I think it shows these guys to have a sense of humour, and a slightly quirky way of (nicely) dealing with the customer.

I'm wondering if any of the bands on the Sanctuary might want to take advantage of this to get some distribution outside of their live shows. Note that I have never dealt with them, and am not affiliated with them in any way. Caveat emptor; do your homework should you decide to go down this road.

Aloha,

Brad
