U.S. official: No change on status of Cuba help but 'extended discussion' continues

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The U.S. State Department said Thursday there has been "extended discussion" on Cuba's offer to send doctors to the United States to help Hurricane Katrina victims. But Sean McCormack, State Department spokesman, said there's "nothing new" in terms of the U.S. stance toward the offer.

McCormack said in the U.S. government's official exchanges with the Cuban government, the United States received a general offer of assistance. In public, the Castro government has made a specific offer to send more than 1,500 doctors to the U.S. Gulf Coast. (Posted: 2:05 p.m.)
