bradm
I remember back in the mid-1980s, when I saw the video for Billy Bragg's song, "Levi Stubbs' Tears". The stark nature of it, with one guy, singing fervently, backed up by an electric guitar plugged straight into an amp*, mesmerized me. I recently discovered that there are a bunch of Bragg shows on the Live Music Archive. So far, I've downloaded two different shows, both from BC, but 10 years apart: 1986-12-05, and 1996-11-05, and they're great. It's so refreshing to hear someone be angry, and be angry about something, with conviction behind it, and the ability write intelligent and meaningful lyrics. Coincidentally, he's playing in Toronto on March 11 at the Opera House, a show I can't make. Aloha, Brad * A Roland Cube 60. I had a Cube 20 at the time. TimmyB
Hey bradm,That's too bad that you can not make it to the Billy Bragg show on March 11, at the Opera House. I would have loved to have seen you there.Tim
zero
Interestingly the engineer on Bragg and Wilco's Mermaid Avenue (Matthew Ellard) is producing the Slip's newest album - produced the slip's newest album I mean.
Hal Johnson
Im not a big Wilco fan, but one of the discs from Mermaid ave has about four or five my favorite songs from the last couple of years. If I thought for a second Bragg would be playing those at his show, Id be sorry to miss it.
ConcernedCitizenOfCoboconk
Thanks for this BradM! But um a technical question if I may...what is up with this .flac file format? I'm assuming I could download a special player for this but can I convert to mp3 for my ipod? Anyone know?
ConcernedCitizenOfCoboconk
I've already scanning the Torrent FAQs for help on this and haven't found anything.
bradm
"flac" stands for "Free Lossless Audio Codec", and it's an alternative to "shn" (or "shorten"). For all your FLAC needs, head tohttp://flac.sourceforge.net/To convert to MP3, my guess is that you'll have to convert the .flac files to .wav, and then convert the .wav to .mp3.However, if you go tohttp://www.archive.org/audio/etreelisting-browse.php?collection=etree&mode=mp3&cat=Billy%20Braggyou can get the Billy Bragg shows that are available in MP3 form.Aloha,Brad
Birdy
CCoC - archive.org has a very useful FAQ page that has definitely come in handy for me when trying to sort all this stuff out. go here...
Birdy
google "converting .wav to mp3" and a number of programs pop up that'll do the job.there may be a way easier way of doing these kinds of things that i don't know about.. but whatever works! fluffhead77
Hey Bradm... if you're into Mr Bragg these days check this show out. I DL'ed it about a year ago and it's fantastic quality and shows a great cross section of his work. It also features Kirsty MacColl(R.I.P.) and some killer horns... well worth the listen

bradm
No worries. I've got it going now, and it's great Bragg (I've never heard him, assuming it's him, play piano before). I'm becoming more and more convinced that it would be impossible for someone (like me) to sing Billy Bragg tunes without adopting his London accent. It's almost as if the accent (and the inflexions he uses on the words) was part of the lyrics.Aloha,Brad
fluffhead77
i hear ya...I used play Help save the youth of america just messing around on the acoustic and invariably slipped into my best cockney accent, which coincidentally isn't that bad having grown up not far from London ~ but still doesn't disguise the fact that I can't sing, no matter what accent it's in! bradm
Oh, man..."Stand By Me*" with Kristi MacColl just started...must resist urge to pogo 'round the cubicle...Aloha,Brad* I think the correct title is "Train In Vain", a tune by The Clash.
