"You've got to be crazy"

Get it straight, buddy, that song is called Dogs, from the greatest album Pink Floyd ever released, Animals.

If you've ever seen Roger Waters' "Live In The Flesh" DVD from his 2000 tour, the two lead guitar players are Doyle Bramhall II and Snowy White. Andy Fairwhether Low plays rhythm and also bass when Roger picks up the acoustic.

Doyle Bramhall II

I feel like I've seen this guy somewhere, did he ever play with Herbie Hancock? Something tells me I saw him at Bonnaroo during the Superjam...can anyone help me out with that?

Oh I know its off topic, but whatever...

I think DB II played with Eric Clapton, and he was also in ARC Angels with Chris "Whipper" Layton and Tommy Shannon, who were in Steve Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble.

Aloha,

Brad

The other member of Arc Angels was ex-Dylan guitarist and former 80's pin-up boy Charlie Sexton.

Snowy White began his tenure as an ancillary player with Floyd on the 1977 Animals tour and also was part of the "surrogate band" that played alongside PF during the Wall shows in 80/81.

In 1974 & 1975, most PF shows featured three new songs: "Raving & Drooling", "You've Gotta Be Crazy" and "Shine On You Crazy Diamond".

The album that would become "Wish You Were Here" was originally supposed to have all of three songs on it: the three aforementioned new songs. Obviously, only "Shine On" made it (split in half)to the final product; "Have A Cigar", "WYWH" and "Welcome to the Machine" were worked up in the studio to complete the album.

In 1976 they begna work on what would become "Animals" and both the remaining "new" songs were drastically re-written and given new lyrics: ergo, "Dogs" and "Sheep".

YOU GOTTA BE CRAZY

Pink Floyd 1974

Music and lyrics: Waters and Gilmour

You gotta be crazy, you gotta be mean

You gotta keep your kids and your car clean

You gotta keep climbing, you gotta keep fit

You gotta keep smiling, you gotta eat shit

You gotta be small to be a big shot

You gotta eat meat to stay at the top

You gotta be trusted, gotta tell lies

You gotta be able to narrow your eyes

You gotta beleive they've gotta beleive you

You gotta appear easy to see through

Gotta be sure you look good on the TV

Gotta resemble a human being

You gotta keep one eye over your shoulder

Gonna get harder as you get older

Gotta fly south and hide in the sand

Gotta forget that you're gonna get cancer

And when you loose control

You'll reap the harvest you have sown

And as the fear grows

The bad blood slows and turns to stone

And it's too late to loose the weight

You used to need to throw around

So have a good drown

As you go down

Alone

Dragged down by the stone

Gotta be sure, you gotta be quick

Gotta divide the tame from the sick

Gotta keep some of us docile and fit

You gotta keep everyone burying this shit

You gotta get you started early

Processed by the time you're thirty

Work like fuck 'till you're sixty five

And then your time's your own until you die

I gotta admit to a lot of confusion

Pain in the head is the child of collusion

Gotta resist the creeping malaise

You gotta beleive in the way you get out of the maze

But you, you just keep on pretending

You can tell a sucker from a friend

But you still raise the knife to

Stranger, lover, friend and foe alike

Who was born in a house full of pain

Who was sent out to play on his own

Who was raised on a diet of shame

Who was trained not to spit in the fan

Who was told what to do by the man

Who was broken by trained personnel

Who was fitted with bridle and bit

Who was given a seat in the stand

Who was forcing his way to the rails

Who was offered a place on the board

Who was only a stranger at home

Who was ground down in the end

Who was found dead on the phone

Who was dragged down by the stone

RAVING AND DROOLING

Pink Floyd 1974

Music, lyrics and vocals: Waters

Raving and drooling I fell on his neck with a scream

He had a whole lotta terminal shock in his eyes

That's what you get for pretending the rest are not real

Babbling and snapping at far away flies

He will zig zag his way back through memories of boredom and pain

How does it feel to be empty and angry and spaced

Split up the middle between the illusion of safety in numbers

and the fist in your face

Anyone ever line up "Wish you were here" with the second part of Wizard of Oz? You pause the tape right when the cd ends... put in Wish you were here and press play at the same time.

Shine on you crazy diamond doesn't have much syncronisity, but the alarm bells for Welcome to the Machine "wake up" Dorty and the Lion when they are put to sleep in the poppies by the witch... The First Deep bars of Welcome to the machine come in when they look up and see Oz... very effective... there were lots of other things too but I can't remember right now.

so You've got to be crazy is the original title of "Dogs" ... I always wondered about why it was called Dogs, doesn't seem to have any reference in the song lyrics.

man I really loved that album, and the harmony guitar work blows me away.... nevery heard of this guy Snowy White either.. interesting...

I always took Animals to be a cynical indictment of the human race, describing 3 archetypes or entities, very broadly:

Dogs - corporations

Pigs - politicians

Sheep - the populace

The lyrics are on this album are among my favourite. Dogs in particular is incredible.

I agree Ollie, I understand the album the same way.

Dogs are slick, heartless business types; the first part of the tune is written as if its one expert Dog teaching others how to operate:

"Gotta sleep on your toes when you're on the street,

Got to be able to pick out the easy meat with your eyes closed

Then moving in silently downwind and out of site,

You've got to strike when the moment is right without thinking

And after awhile, you can work on points for style

Like the club tie, and the firm handshake

Certain look in the eye and an easy smile

Yeah

And in the end you'll pack up, fly down south, and hide your head in the sand

Just another sad old man

All alone and dying of cancer"

What a mammoth record. Some of Gilmour's finest work, too.
