Referee Dermot Gallagher will be demoted from the Premiership's list of referees following his failure to dismiss Ben Thatcher for his horrific challenge on Pedro Mendes.

The Oxfordshire referee inexplicably opted to caution the Manchester Citeh defender for felling the Pompey midfielder with a forearm smash on Wednesday night. By doing so, Gallagher implied that he had seen the challenge but still believed that a yellow card was sufficient despite Mendes being knocked unconscious.

While the decision has prompted widespread incredulity and outrage, it is the

unequivocal refusal of Keith Hackett, the referees' supremo, to defend Gallagher's failure to dismiss Thatcher that spells the end of his Premiership career.

Speaking out in unusually harsh terms against a member of his refereeing team, Hackett told The Daily Mail: "Having looked at the replays I've been disappointed with some refereeing decisions. I've already taken action in terms of selection for forthcoming games. The criteria for top level is that these are made on the basis of performance.

"Everyone wants to get off to a good start in a season and referees are no different. You will always get an error but in some of the opening games there were clear errors I can't defend."

Wednesday's appearance at the City of Manchester Stadium is thus likely to be Gallagher's first and last in the Premiership during his final season as a referee. At 49, he has already passed the cut-off retirement age but was awarded a 12-month extension last year.

The official is no stranger to criticism. Gallagher has twice previously been demoted - for failing to dismiss Arsenal defender Steve Bould for a professional foul in 1998 and only cautioning Robbie Keane in 2001 after he slapped David Beckham - although he escaped censure for red-carding Arsenal's Gilberto Silva at Newcastle last December for two innocuous challenges.

next w.e. is a Euro 2008 qualifier w.e., no EPL on. England-Andorra @ noon on Saturday, we should think about hitting a pub if anyone's in town (it's on pay-per-view)

should be a cakewalk with plenty of goals, a good excuse to have brunch and a pint early in the day

mmmmmmmm beer

This seems like a good place to catch it , frig they even have the Holland game on later in the day. It's on Bank St, sorta near where the Bayou used to be.

LONDON (AFP) - Premiership footballers are storing stem cells from their newborn babies to use in case of their own career-threatening sports injuries.

They are freezing cells taken from the umbilical cord blood of their babies as a possible future cure for cartilage and ligament problems, the Sunday Times newspaper reported.

Five professional footballers have frozen their children's stem cells with Liverpool-based CryoGenesis International (CGI), and London-based Smart Cells, has done the same for three Premiership players in the past year.

One Premier League footballer, playing in the northwest of England, explained: "We decided to store our new baby's stem cells for possible future therapeutic reasons, both for our children and possibly for myself.

"As a footballer, if you're prone to injury it can mean the end of your career, so having your stem cells - a repair kit if you like - on hand makes sense," added the player, who declined to be named.

Paul Griffiths, managing director of CGI, said: "This has been carried out experimentally. The stem cells are injected directly into the knee and because they have the same genetic code they start rebuilding."

One professional footballer known to have stored stem cells for his children's future use is Arsenal's French international striker Thierry Henry, although there is no indication he intends them for his own use.

Over 11,000 British parents have in the past five years paid up to 1,500 pounds (2,831 dollars) to store their babies' stem cells to use should their children become ill.

There're some crazy transfer window closure happenings going on... Malbranque to Spuds, the Argie pair possibly to the Hammers (that's HUGE if it happens), Neill to the Pool and Hargreaves to ManUre.

oh wait that last one isn't happening. sorry about that.

ona related note:

Rumour du jour

'On the surface, the move is nothing short of sensational: never before have two world class players yet to reach their prime - both are only 22 - rejected a host of elite clubs in order to join a middling one. While it true that West Ham are on the up with Alan Pardew at the helm and exciting talents such as Anton Ferdinand, Yossi Benayoun and Nigel Reo-Coker in their ranks, it seems likely that the Argentinian duo's decision was, at least in part, influenced by behind-the-scenes interests.

'Corinthians are partially owned by the mysterious Media Sports Investments company, in which Roman Abramovich is said to have a significant holding. It has also been reported that MSI owns the contracts of both players and can therefore block moves to, say, clubs likely to rival Chelsea for domestic or European glory' - The Guardian.
