It's true that the draft picks will only be as good as the scouting system, but it's the GM that is in charge of making sure that all the correct scouts are in place. That being said, just LOOK at the 1995 draft!

Here is the 1995 draftees, listed by place in the draft, team, name, and games played in the NHL:

1 Ottawa.........Bryan Berard.............554

2 NY Islanders...Wade Redden..............694

3 Los Angeles....Aki-Petteri Berg.........606

4 Anaheim........Chad Kilger..............579

5 Tampa Bay......Daymond Langkow..........707

6 Edmonton.......Steve Kelly..............147

haha, enjoy the second line centre that Janne Niininmaa and Garth Murray are going to fetch you!

Yeah, I know. It's not much. [color:purple]Maybe we can throw in Patrick Traverse.

What is your point about the 1995 draft?

4 goalies went after Ryan and the Habs obviously didnt feel that they needed one since the 2 drafts before and after the 95 draft saw them take a keeper in the final rounds.

That leaves 17 players to select from, 8 of which never made any stench of a mark on the NHL.

Ryan was a good looking prospect that never panned out. The year he was drafted, he posted some pretty damn fine looking numbers for the Tri-City Americans.

Regular Season

GP - 70

G - 50

A - 60

PIM - 207

Playoffs

GP - 17

G - 12

A - 15

PIM - 36

You are making it seem like that year was a 'cant-miss' draft that only fooled the Habs. How did Teemu Riihijarvi work out for the Sharks? Or Brad Church for Washington?

The draft is the most important tool for building an organization. Of course it's a giant crapshoot, and you really don't know if you're getting a hot prospect, or someone who has peaked in their hockey career.

That being said, let's take a look at first round picks under Houle, and then first round picks under (Andre) Savard:

REJEAN HOULE

1995 Terry Ryan

1996 Matt Higgins

1997 Jason Ward

1998 Eric Chouinard

1999 no first round pick

2000 Ron Hainsey

ANDRE SAVARD

2001 Mike Komisarek

2002 Chris Higgins

I did some digging to see who the Habs got in 1999 in exchange for their 1st round pick: Trevor Linden. The Islanders subsequently wasted their pick on some guy (Branislav Mezei).

Further to Booche's point, you need to look at the full draft year - not just the first round - to evaluate a draft. If you got a couple of serviceable players in your late rounds, a first round mulligan is quickly forgotten.

And the GM is just that - the manager. He hires the staff and decides who's opinion he's going to trust. So I'd say he's fully responsible.

What the hell happened in 1999?? Someone obviously did absolutely no studying before the final exam. 1998 seems to be a decent crop, despite Chouinard being 1st.

Not that I'm defending Houle (he wouldn't know a good prospect from his asshole if a french canadian kid was standing nearby), but 1999 was a weak draft class overall. 1997 was very top heavy, if you missed on your first selection you probably didn't get anything out of it.

Poor Aebischer is starting to fall behind Huet in a big way... Four goals allowed in each of his last three starts, ouch.

Aebishcer is looking more and more like trade bait as the Hamilton Bulldogs have two very serviceable goalies (Yann Danis and Jaroslav Halak) waiting in the wings for that coveted backup spot.

The big question is whether the Habs have 100% confidence in Huet down the stretch. There is a reason why the Habs are keeping Aebischer for the time being...

With Niinimaa and Aebischer facing a certain trade, and with Souray's recent comments about what the Habs' priorities should be for resigning the big three UFAs (Markov then Rivet THEN Souray), it's only a matter of time before the Habs make a major move. Add to that a farm system choked with prospects, and we will be looking at some players moving for sure.

Niinimaa aint going nowhere but Hamilton. I am VERY skeptical of all these rumours of a package that Gainey is putting together. Anywhere from Souray-Ryder-Habischer or Souray-Habischer-Samsonov.........all this shit is pimply nosed little fucks that have too much time on their hands.

If they send Niinimaa down to the minors he has to clear waivers first. I doubt that the Habs will want to risk being stuck with a chunk of his salary (what is it, half?) if some other team decides he's a good deal at a discount.

On a seperate note I am planning on going to a Hamilton Bulldogs game while I am in Hamilton over the holidays!

Nope. If he was to get picked up on his way down, his new team takes the whole salary. He'd also have to clear waivers if he was called back up, that's when the two team's split the salary and cap space.

Don't kid yourself, the chances are slim that any team takes him even at half his salary. He couldn't make the top 6 in either Dallas or Mtl this year.
