Sorry Booche, it doesn't look like Sundin will sign with the Habs at this point. Gainey didn't even travel to Sweden to meet with him face-to-face by some accounts.

I'm still keeping my fingers crossed that he's basically trying to screw over Cliff Fletcher, and will sign with the Habs after July 1st.

You guys are in trouble if you are trusting me ;)

Anyway...

I know that The Habs are determined to make next year one to remember. Especially since it is the 100th anniversary. Gainey wants to find a solid center for the team. There are obviously talks with Sundin and Hossa is still talked about. The Habs tried hard at the trade deadline for both of these players and the pursuit continues. They will spend the money they have at some point.

Nothing is guaranteed but they do have a nice product to pitch. Winning the Cup in Montreal on the 100th anniversary would be like the Leafs making it to the Stanley Cup final ;)

Not much can be done if the players focused on go for more cash or somewhere they feel the chance to win would be greater but I have faith in Gainey and how he presents Montreal to the players.

Tradition is obviously a big thing in Montreal, but do you guys really think Gainey gives a shit if they win in the team's 99th, 100th or 101st year? He's not the type to sacrifice the future for one arbitrarily special year. I'd say this is more coincidence with the state the team is in than making a push because it's the 100th season.

Of course that is not the only thing and Gainey will not sacrifice the future of the franchise for one year. The moves the Habs make are a combination of the teams present situation and the pride the organization takes in itself. If you don't believe that the organization is buzzing up and down about next year then you are mistaken. They believe they have a genuine shot at the Cup. The Habs have not gone into a season with this attitude in ages.

Does Gainey give a shit if they win it this year or next or further down the road? In the grand scheme of things, not likely. However he completely understands the tradition in Montreal and will do anything he can to make it happen. Winning it next year would be icing on the cake. It's no guarantee but the potential is there.

Lets face it the odds are stacked against the Habs. It's too hard to predict what will happen. I am just sure Bob will put us in the best position he can.

Mmm... Titsteak...

So La Presse is all hot and heavy about Marc Denis potentially being a good candidate for the 3rd string goalie position in Montreal now that he was bought out by Tampa Bay.

Of course, La Presse like Denis for the sole reason that he is a Quebecer.

Whomever the Habs get as a 3rd goalie will have to accept a two-way contract and share time/mentor Cedrick Desjardins in Hamilton for most of the season, so we're looking at a grizzled veteran who is a team player, and willing to accept the required role.

La Presse also name dropped Jean-Sébastien Aubin, Alex Auld, and Johan Hedberg, without of course any actual proof.

I love my goalies, so I am keeping a keen eye on this story...

Well Fletcher gave Sundin until Sunday to decide if he's coming back to Toronto, Gainey is reportedly offering 2 years at $7M each, and the Rangers are pitching the dream line of Sundin/Jagr/whoever.

Where do you get this shit?

How do you explain Fletcher on Off The Record yesterday stating he wouldnt rule out trying to sign Sundin past July 1st date?

Stop fucking around. No one cares what your 17 year old internet buddies are saying.

That's a change. The Leafs were always offering a dream line of Sundin/whoever/whoever.

Well, here is the list of players in the Habs organization that officially become UFAs today, in order of importance:

1- Mark Streit, D

Powerplay specialist for Montreal last season. Shunted to 4th line duty but would prefer to play D. Bob Gainey already stated that he won't change his top 6 D-man core, so seemingly there is no room for Mark on the Habs team. He made $600K last season, would demand a lot more this year.

Very useful versatile player, but who wants to pay more than $1.2M for a 4th line player? Habs will pass on him.

[color:red]Signed with NY Islanders for $4.125M for five years

2- Micheal Ryder, RW

How the mighty have fallen. Multiple 30 goal season hero to this year's version of Sergei Samsonov. Got paid $2.95M last year, judging his current worth and desire to play is the thing of nightmares that I won't bother with.

It was good while it lasted, but he's as good as gone.

[color:red]Signed with Boston for $4M per season.

3- Bryan Smolinski, C

Aging veteran who captained an effective shutdown line during the playoffs, but his spot is threatened by rookie Kyle Chipchura. Gainey has a soft spot for veterans, so I wouldn't be surprised if he signs one to a one-year contract. But it won't be Bryan and his $2M contract.

4- Patrice Brisebois, D

Surprise signing last year, he has expressed his desire to stay in Montreal and keep playing. It could happen, but Brisebois will need to accept a 7th d-man role, with possibly a two-way contract.

5- Yann Danis, G

#3 in the Habs goalie depth chart. He had a shutout in his first ever NHL game in 2005 as Jose Theodore's backup. Since then he has seen Cristobal Huet, Jaroslav Halak, and Carey Price pass by him in Hamilton on their way to Montreal, and now has Cedrick Desjardins in his rear view. Yann wisely decided that if he is going to crack the NHL ever again, he needs a change of scenery.

6- Mathieu Biron, D

The older, less successful brother of Flyers goalie Martin Biron, Mathieu has plenty of NHL experience, starting in 1999-2000 with full seasons with the Islanders, Tampa Bay, Florida, and Washington but hasn't cracked the NHL since 2005-2006. Was acquired by Montreal for Patrick Traverse, but spent his entire tenure in the organization with the Bulldogs. Might want to look elsewhere to crack the NHL again.

...things thin out at this point...

7- JP Cote, D

Destined to be the Habs' 7th D in 2006-2007, he injured himself during the pre-season and was never called back up thanks to the surprising emergence of Mark Streit. Spent a total of five seasons with the Bulldogs and played 8 games in the NHL. He would be a good signing for the Bulldogs because, although unspectacular on offense, he is an iron man defenceman who rarely misses games and was on the top D pairing in Hamilton this past season. No NHL future in Montreal though.

8- Duncan Milroy, RW

A questionable work ethic has always been the monkey on his back. The second highest scorer in Bulldog history is a good thing, but also a bad thing. Five seasons with the Bulldogs and 5 games in the NHL. Would be good for the Bulldogs if he re-signed to provide a veteran presence, but that would be the extent of his involvement.

9- Andrew Archer, D

Injured more often than Martin Havlat, this five year veteran of the Hamilton Bulldogs is high risk, low reward, so I doubt that the Habs will re-sign him.

10- Jimmy Bonneau, LW

The last natural goon in the Habs organization... Listen, when you ride the pine during the ECHL playoffs you know your career is in trouble.

11- Jonathan Ferland, RW

Five year veteran of the Bulldogs, he played 7 games with the Habs in 2005-2006, but since then was relegated to a veteran presence in Hamilton. He didn't even wait until free agency to sign a contract in Europe for next season.

[color:red]signed with EC Villacher SV of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga on May 13, 2008

12- Brett Englehardt, RW

Acquired late in the season for Francis Lemieux, we're really scraping the bottom of the barrel now. He too did not wait for July 1st to sign a contract in Europe.

[color:red]signed with Augsburger Panther of the Erste Bank Eishockey Liga on May 8, 2008

And because I am really bored, here is a list of RFAs in the Habs organization, once again in order of importance:

1- Andrei Kostitsyn, RW

By far the highest priority for Bob Gainey as Andrei is the most likely Habs RFA to receive an offer sheet from some other GM. What is Andrei's worth? Well that is something that is being fought about UFC style between Don Meehan, sports agent extraordinaire, and Julien Brisebois, Gainey's prodigal assistant. Rumours of up to $4.5M per year have floated around, but only time will tell how much he will sign for (hopefully with the Habs).

[color:green]Signed with Montreal for $3.25M per for three seasons

2- Jaroslav Halak, G

Coming off of his entry level contract, Jaroslav is looking for a two year one-way deal. Bob needs to be careful here, because Jaro might be making more money than Carey Price with his new contract, and that might wound the ego of the Franchise Saviour. I don't expect anyone giving an offer sheet to Jaro, so he'll take what he is given.

3- Ryan O'Byrne, D

As solid as an oak tree on D, and nearly as mobile. Ryan is a top 4 D-man for Montreal due to his size, but I don't expect a long-term contract for him. He'll be around long enough for Pavel Valentenko to develop in Hamilton, as he is taller, faster, and has a harder slapshot.

4- Josh Gorges, D

Suddenly that Craig Rivet trade isn't looking too bad is it? Josh Gorges had a solid season, moving from 7th D-man to top pairing with Andrei Markov. He'll be given a comfortable deal which will include Francis Bouillion's spot (and salary) in 2009-2010.

5- Maxim Lapierre, C

Sidney Crosby's favorite player. Maxim is the prototypical shitdisturber for the new NHL. Other players hate him so much that they take stupid penalties, and that's when the Habs PP unit walks in.

[color:green]Signed a two-year deal with Montreal on June 10th

6- Mikhail Grabovski, C

Idiot. Shows so much potential in Hamilton, going on an insane points run after returning from injury, that he gets called back up, only to pout and skip on team travel because he sits out a game. Undeniable raw talent, loves to play, unable to handle being relegated to an auxiliary. Is there any room for a small fast forward on the top two lines in Montreal? Probably not.

7- Corey Locke, C

All set to make his NHL debut after five years in Hamilton, and his equipment fails to show up on time. Now that's just bad luck. He's Hamilton's all-time leading scorer. Is that a good thing? If he signs with Montreal he'll be in Hamilton again this year, but might get some call-ups.

...don't bother past this point unless you really care...

8- Marvin Degon, D

Signed as a free agent last year, primarly to play as 5/6 D-man. Didn't do terrible. Hamilton could use him if they feel like it.

9- Cory Urquhart, C

How does it feel being the only bust in the Habs first five draft picks of 2003? Same class year as AK46, Lapierre, Rhino Burn, Locke, and Halak, definitely polar results.

Was 'loaned' to Pheonix's IHL affilite to finish the season after not cutting the mustard in the ECHL anymore. The trade for Olivier Latendresse was supposed to be made official after the season, but nothing was ever mentioned.

10- Alexander Perezhogin, RW

We own his rights, so I will include him here, but I don't even know if the Habs even qualified him this year or not. He still has another year in his contract with defending champion Salavat Yulaev in the RSL... I mean KHL.

[color:red]Plays for the Ruskies

11- Andre Benoit, D

After playing two seasons with the Bulldogs, he played in Finland last season. Signed to play in the Swedish League this coming season. I don't know if the Habs even bothered to qualify him.

[color:red]Signed with Södertälje SK of the Swedish League on April 4th

12- Janne Lahti, LW

Fleed the country after the Bulldogs last game of the season, which he sat out, and is not expected to return any time soon.
