Bidini Strikes Again

Recommended Posts

Dave Bidini of the Rheostatics has written a whole lot about Canada's national game - but the stories have always been true. Well, at least mostly true.

Now the author of books such as Tropic of Hockey and The Best Game You Can Name has just released his very first book of fiction, and guess what it's about?

According to the book's publisher, Five Hole Stories is a collection that's "full of sex, drugs and high-sticking." In one story, a falling hockey star turns to a magic salve to try and get his game back; in another, a conversation reveals surprising facts about a female goalie; and in another, a minor-leaguer discovers the ups and downs of hockey in Europe - both on and off the ice.

Bidini is currently on tour, performing songs and reading from the new book. Upcoming dates include Cannington, Ontario (Nov. 10) and a launch bash in Toronto (Dec. 5).

In January, Bidini, along with Martin Tielli, Dave Clarke, and Ford Pier will perform a theatrical version of the book with the famed Calgary theatre company One Yellow Rabbit. If you want to find out how things are going so far, you can check out some of the sounds Bidini and his cohorts are composing for the piece here: just click on "Music."

Bidini has also just been named a recipient of the F. G. Bressani Literary Prize by Vancouver's Italian Cultural Centre for his contributions to Italo-Canadian writing. Past recipients include Nino Ricci and Michael Ondaatje.
