Intelligent Design Ruled "Not Science"

I watched the whole thing DEM. Very interesting (if only for Corens shot at CityTV)... as much as i disagree with his views, at least he gets the debate on the air... and give him credit for setting up a debate where the Scientist just bats around the creationist (self proclaimed debate expert and teacher) like a rag doll.

Thought I would let this one die, but I wanted to add something. This whole religion/science dichotomy saddens me. It saddens me because it's a reminder that philosophy, once a central part of ordinary people's resources for contemplating the meaning their own existence, has been relegated to the ivory tower of cordoroy-wearing, goatee-stroking navel gazers and their dumbfounded students (no offence, DEM).

If ever there was a time when the tools of philosophy could help us better openly debate and understand the multiplicity of "T"ruths and worldviews, it's now, and yet we find it abandoned in favour of dogma, be it of the scientific or religous flavour.

There. Now I'm done.

No worries, Blane - I'm more of a three-day growth, jeans-and-t-shirt kinda prof ;) (fwiw, I've also found teaching at the college level has made my academic training more relevant than teaching in university ever was).

And you're right; we seemed to have regressed into a new kind of cultural pragmatism, where just asking the bigger questions is enough to get you shunted out of any debate. My first sense is that disciplinary specialisation is largely to blame, preventing people from looking over to other fields of study, or making them territorial about their own.
