mercy mercy mercy (praps not a motown song per se though)

That is most certainly a Motown song.. it's by Marvin Gaye, it's on "What's going on" 1971.

I also suggest....

"Take me in your arms" by Kim Weston

"Tracks of my tears"

by Smokey Robinson & the Miracles

Cool Jerk- The Capitols

It's a shame- The Spinners

Papa was a Rolling Stone- The Temptations

Heatwave- the Supreames

Mr Pitiful- Otis Redding

How Sweet It Is- Marvin Gaye

Uptight (everythings alright)- Stevie Wonder

I Second that Emotion- Smokey Robinson

Ooh Child- The Chi Lites

For Once in My Life- Stevie

Someday (We'll be together)- Diana Ross

What Becomes of the Brokenheated- Jimmy Ruffin

Midnight Hour- Wilson Pickett

and my absolute fav:

Signed Sealed Delivered- Stevie

I can post tonnes more, I love Motown and listen frequently.

If you have access to the pig and he likes this stuff, I cannot recommend anything more highly than Otis Redding- Live at the Whiskey A Go Go (1962)

I believe its actually called Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology). One of the most overtly political tunes that came out of the most political artist on the Motown roster that made it big.

Continuing to be an insufferable nitpicker, but the Motown soul is very different from Aretha Franklin. The Motown sound was a very polished, clean sounding, pop soul, as opposed to the more funky, earthy sounds of the soul acts on Atlantic (like Aretha) and Stax ... I love both sounds, but they are very distinct from each other.
