AdamH
I've established what it is but where can one buy this strange thing? It's not at Herb and Spice on Bank or in the west end neither.I've also heard you can make it.
MarcO
I haven't had too much trouble finding it. It really should be found in most non-budget oriented food chains (ie Sobey's, Fortinos, Zehr's).check wherever they sell tofu products.otherwise it SHOULD be a staple at any health food store.I don't love seitan but slather it in teriyaki sauce and put in a stirfry and it's good enough. phishtaper
didnt we have some discussion about this before. it's basically just wheat gluten. this was the ingredient that was contaminated and caused the massive recall of pet food last year. i thot there were still safety concerns if it's from china? Ms Zimmy
If you want to make it, you can get gluten at Herb and Spice. To buy it...I can look into it for you.If you are going to make it, let me know and I can give you some info, it's difficult.I like tempeh much much better. bouche
for those times that you are craving some Seitan, I have a suggestion. Go out and get a nice thick pork chop. Brine it and grill it.
Ms Zimmy
Well, I wont ever be eating pork again...not after talking to my boss about the environmental issues surrounding pork farms, the contaminants in pork meat and the way pigs are treated on farms. (She had a case that went to trial relating to pig farms...fun research that was.)Anyways, I tried making seitan and it didn't work out well. TVP is a pretty good substitute for certain meats. They sell it at Herb and Spice.
timouse
pastured meats are a good substitute for factory farmed meats.
Ms Zimmy
When it comes to pork, you should buy organic...its really expensive...but I think worth it.Farmers administer some pretty toxic hormones and anti-biotics to pigs. Some quite toxic to humans. It's law that they stop the injections at least 3 months prior to slaughter, but most do not follow this law.
