Here's how my day off has gone so far:

7 am: ring ring.

me: (very groggy) Hello?

buddy: Dave! Thought I would catch you before you left for work.

me: well I'm off today, I'm trying to sleep in.

back to sleep.

9 am: ring ring

me: (groggy again) Hello?

other buddy: Dave! Did I wake you? I was just gonna leave a message.

back to sleep

9:30 am doorbell rings.

hydro guy: I'm here to install your smart meter.

there is creemore inside the cancer-something-or-other tent at the west end of the site. and apparently there were no lines there last night. i'm not drinking on weeknights so i can't personally vouch for that though. creemore tallboys were $7. nice markup there. cheaper than at a hockey game though. some solace.

I had a pretty good opening night too. The new setup is great for carrying beers, but the soundbleed from River to the Roots Stage was noticeable. The tower at the Roots Stage is actually a blackjack table, hosted by Casino Lac Leamy! I don't know if you are actually playing for real money, but people were going up and playing with chips from my vantage point during BBofA. That was great music, but the lead singer didn't stop talking.

I caught the Secret Machines on arrival, who were loud as hell and were in the midst of a 7+ minute noise jam- which I didn't like at all. Jose Gonzales was amazing, for about 10 minutes then it was just the same old thing (reminded me alot of Mason Jennings). TV on the Radio came out of the gate hard and sounded good- but seemed to lose everything they came out with as the set progressed so I bailed to catch the final tunes of Keb Mo. Waited there for Taj Mahal which was wicked. I've never seen him and he came out with gusto and played some really sweet Carib Blues. He played a bit of Voodoo Chile during one tune. I agree about the closer tunes (Fishin Blues, Ain't Gonna Whistle Dixie No More) being a bit of a downer. When Taj was done I was excited to see The Hip as I was a huge fan years back but haven'

t seen them much lately. They sucked. Sorry to those who liked it, but ABAC and Springtime were brutal so I left. I sold my bracelet to a kid who was dying to go in for $10 on the way out, and an unused ticket for $20 so that was pretty cool........

It was cool out on the street near the main stage, there must have been 1000 people watching the Hip from the pavement.

Hooray for Bluesfest! I've got today and all of next week off work. The plan is to chill with my grandmothers by day and catch the shows by night.

I bought a pass assuming that I would miss last night's performances b/c I had to work all day way over in Shelburne, ON. That plan changed when I found out that Taj Mahal was playing that night, so I skipped out of work as early as possible and sped sped sped my way right to the show - and made it! I enjoyed Taj Mahal, the highlight being the ancousitc banjo piece in the encore.

I'm around all week and my grannies certainly don't want to come to Bluefest so write me if you want to meet up.

Thanks for the tip! Like phorbesie, I find the other options very disgusting.

$7.75 for poutine? Jesus.

I'm thinking of having dinner there both Saturday and Sunday, so any opinions (positive or negative) about the food vendors would be appreciated. (I did a scan of them yesterday, and noticed one place selling smoked meat sandwiches, and one or two places doing pulled pork sandwiches, so will probably go with one of those, barring anyone's bad reviews of them, or extremely good reviews of other vendors.)

Aloha,

Brad

a tip about beer lines: last night, during TV on the radio and the hip, the line ups to the right of the main stage were really long, but there were no line ups to the left of the main stage. it could have been just a fluke of last night but it could also be helpful to know!

i had the pulled pork last year, and if it's the same vendors, don't bother ordering it. it was dry and tasteless. and expensive.

coulda been a bad day or a bad cook or a replaced vendor though. who knows.
