Phil Lesh Makes Stealth Club Appearance

Written by Mike Greenhaus

Friday, 31 October 2008

Phil Lesh will begin his now annual run of shows at New York’s Nokia Theatre this evening. While in town, the Grateful Dead bassist and his current guitarist Jackie Greene warmed up by trekking down to the Lower East side to sit it in with The Tangiers Blues Band at Manhattan’s intimate R Bar. The seemingly nondescript band actually features a number of familiar faces, including veteran rock photographer Danny Clinch (who also plays a mean harp), Fun Lovin' Criminals guitarist Hugh Morgan and keyboardist Peter Levin, among others.

A number of familiar faces have performed with The Tangiers Blues Band over the years, including Bruce Willis, Lars Ulrich, Gavin DeGraw and John McEnroe. Clinch also played harmonica with Phil Lesh & Friends and special guest Trey Anastasio at New York’s Beacon Theatre on February 12, 2006.
