Pretty sweet!! Now if they'd only move the festival to a weekend I'll be in town. Grrrrr....

Sloan may be the biggest band Westboro’s Westfest arts festival has ever booked.

But then, the 2010 edition of Westboro’s annual street party is the biggest one yet in its seven year history.

Elaina Martin, festival founder and artistic director, has lined up dozens of bands, dancers, writers, artists and artisans to keep 14 blocks of Richmond St. rocking when Westfest opens on June 11 with its annual Tam Tam drumming ceremony before Dr. Lee introduces an evening of music by “Rootsy Women,†including Dala, Madison Violet, The Marigolds and Peggy White.

The music steps into high gear with Saturday’s “Pop Explosion†with Sloan, Will Currie & The Country French, The Balconies, The High Dials and Bloomistry on June 12, and closes June 13 with local favourites MonkeyJunk, The White Wires, TokyoSexWhale, GOOD2GO, Ken Workman & The Union and Autumns Canon.

“Pop explosion is a big moment in our musical history,†Martin says. “We’re growing the festival at a comfortable, safe pace, but we are one of the largest free events anywhere.â€

But the festival isn’t just about music. Authors who will be reading include Bill Brown, Rita Donovan, Shuck author Daniel Allen Cox and Westboro’s Matthew Firth, while visual art by Cara Tierney, Theo Pelmus, Cindy Baker and Natalie Fournier will line the street.

New this year are cool, licensed lounges where adults can enjoy a beverage and large-scale video screens that will help large crowds stay connected with the action on the festival mainstage,

Full information for the free event is posted online at westfest.ca.
