Deals for Rogers HD TV?

AD

Recommended Posts

I just did the switch from Rogers to Bell (because Rogers cable/internet isn't available in Montreal) and I can validate just about everything Sean has said. I don't have the numbers in front of me, but my TV bill is remarkably cheaper now. I think the HD picture is much better on Bell (but Rogers in New Brunswick is on old infrastructure, so that may not be the case elsewhere) but the internet seems slower despite higher advertised speeds.

Bell customer service seems top notch so far, but I never really had problems with Rogers other than the wait times. Bell has historically been quicker to add the new HD sports channels, so that's a plus for me.

I believe Rogers home phone still really undercuts Bell, so that may factor into your overall price decision.

And Booche, I can guarantee you that you have had contracts with Rogers. Anytime you modify your services (i.e. add HD channels) you are automatically locked into a term that you would only ever learn about if you went to cancel.

I'm not sure if this is the same thing as the situation you describe but I add and remove channels all the time and I usually get a pro-rated adjustment on my bill if I cancel in the middle of a billing period.

I ONLY have cable with Rogers so maybe that's the difference.

BTW, isn't Videotron the Rogers equivalent in Quebec land?

Bell has much better english language programming on the island (varies from region to region apparently), Videotron was going to be more expensive for HD sports.

Plus I figured Pierre Karl Peladeau is going to get enough of my tax dollars bringing the NHL back to QC, he doesn't need more of my dough.

I'm moving soon and would like to get HD TV at my new place. I've never subscribed before nor do I own or rent a HD box.

Anyone know of any deals / promotions / smart tips to get HD TV for the lowest price possible?

Depending on your current contractual status you can threaten to leave Rogers and then begin negotiating with a Rogers retention specialist to get some pretty incredible deals. i.e. 30% off, free PVR for a year etc...

I find the Rogers online chat with their customer service to be quite useful in answering questions quickly.

they both suck. these days ai hate bell more than rogers. i was gonna switch to bell for all my services. i cancelled everything and then they still pulled my phone number. i was without a working home phone for a week. then they started sending me bills. i ignored and had to deal with their collection deopartment, who informed me last week that the dispute went in my favour - really?! I dont have to pay ofr something i never had?

rogers does have contracts - i was offered 20% off my cable if i locked in for one year, or 30% everything if i lock in for 2 years. re locking in - you can change the level of service, just not cancel it outright.

actually, you can only have ONE of those deals at a time. I had the free PVR and then was offered the 25% off of cable. my next bill shows up, and they want MORE money they previous months. turns out that I was now being charged $25 a month for the PVR. no arguing could get around that one - and believe me, I tried. they eventually refunded me about $50 for the difference (that took a LOT of negotiation, but I insisted that they do that for me)and I signed up for 2 years and 30% off. then I bought myself a used PVR for $150 (non-HD as my TV is not HD).

I switched everything to Rogers as Primus couldn't even provide me telephone service to my house. Then it became a huge fight between Bell and Primus to decide who was to run or fix the line that ran the service from the pole to my house. After that was figured out, it took two failed missed appointments (that I wasn't even aware of) and Bell telling me it would be another 3 weeks before they'd come fix the line. I called Rogers, and I had service in two days. I shouldn't have been surprised, I too worked at Bell for multiple years, and as a client rep, could not believe the ropes I had to jump through for a customer.

Then, a couple of weeks later, I had issues with my HD channels. Called Rogers, the guy was here the next day. Boosted the power and re-ran all the cable in my house! He couldn't beleive the mess it was. And I'm not talking about just running it along the baseboards, but running through the dropped cieling and hiding it the best he can.

In other words I'm quite happy, and I spend about 160 a month for the super internet, telephone and HD cable. (not including the movie networks)

Does that help?

I witnessed Scot's over the phone banter with Primus/Bell...i was terrified.

I'm a big Rogers advocate too, customer service is wonderful and they are always willing to give you a deal on somethign. I have Super Internet, HD Cable, Telephone and it comes in at 144$ a month with tax. Booya.

In a way, I work for Bell, but I'll stick with Rogers. I know their transmission is more reliable (I deal with Roges/Bell on a regular basis at work). I like that Rogers offers you more new channels. Both Bell and Rogers are similar in the good vs bad comparisons.

One way to save money is to find/provide evidence of a deal offered by either Bell or Rogers such as a newspaper ad or flyer. I got a flyer a year ago from Bell that offered a pretty good deal, so I called up Rogers and complained. Rogers reduced my bill by 30% and threw in my HD box free for a year. Make sure you keep the flyer/ad handy if you want to re-negotiate via phone or in person.

  • 2 weeks later...

One thing I forgot to mention is when you sign up at a new address, make sure to clear it up with the person taking your order that you are new to your address and have never lived there or received cable services there before.

We got home from NYC and our cable etc. was all shut off, but the bill is paid in full.

Well we found out today that someone at our address 5 years ago upped and moved without paying so our services got shut off because they assumed we were the same people that lived in the same apartment since 2006 and were trying to collect on the outstanding amount!
