If you care enough to get your posters properly framed, you probably should take them somewhere that specializes in framing and not some box store that gets high school students to do the framing when they aren't busy stocking shelves. Even with their 40-50% off sales, Michael's will cost close to what you pay a framing shop without the quality assurance. If you want a stock, cheap frame in the standard sizes, then Michael's is fine. If you want some quality work done, a place like Bank St Framing is the way to go. For the price the places charge, the most expensive part of the DIY version would be the glass. I've made a few in my more constructive days. Need: Measuring Tape (measure and plan what you need 10 times before starting) Wood (pre moulded is the way to go) Glass (measure and go to glass place) Mitre Saw (to cut those beauty 45s) Router (to inlay the glass) This can be done on a table saw too, but I somehow don't see bouche as a power tool kinda guy (see Canal thread ) Glue and dowels and/or staples. (hold that shit together) Drill (to make holes for dowels) Clamps (hold that shit together after gluing) Matting (not cheap/not expensive) Clips (to hold workpiece in place against glass) Sandpaper (for rough corners and finishing touches) Mounting Clip (although a couple of nails and some wire will work just fine) Stain (colour up that shit) Know How: cuz you'll be soooooo pissed when you have only what you need and then fuck it up over and over. You can get junk from Ikea and Costco or decide to use better quality at a specialty store, but you'll pay more (obviously). In some cases, it's worth the extra cost. phishtaper Posted January 12, 2011 Report Share Posted January 12, 2011 an 18" x 24" size print, for example, should easily be framable at a decent shop for $200 or so. that would include UV low-glare glass, plain single 3" matt and backer, standard 2" wide black or coloured wood frame, basic removable/museum technique, and wiring. someone is stroking you if they want to charge $400.
