Instruments for Africa

We are excited to announce that Instruments For Africa was selected as one of the 2013 recipients of the Ernest E. Guertin Foundation. With this honour comes a very generous donation that will play a significant role in sending our next shipment of instruments to Zambia.

The Ernest E. Guertin Foundation was established by the late Donald Guertin to commemorate the life of his father, a WWII veteran and resident of Aylmer, Quebec. Funds are distributed to help sustain the work of Canadian charitable and non-charitable institutions.

Our great thanks goes out to the Ernest E. Guertin Foundation for their kind and generous support which is sure to reach countless young people in Africa who deserve the opportunity to play music.

Aloha,

Brad

Instruments For Africa has teamed up with FEPADE to send instruments to their school in South Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC).

FEPADE works to improve the living conditions of local communities affected by the ongoing conflict in eastern DRC and the associated lack of access to essential services. It focuses on peace and human rights, social and economic empowerment of women, assistance for victims of sexual violence, health care, and support for children.

As part of their ongoing humanitarian efforts, FEPADE runs a private music school that currently has an enrollment of 67 students, both male and female, who take classes in singing, basic music theory and basic guitar skills from seven volunteer music teachers.

While the school has access to a piano, some small percussion instruments and a few guitars, with help from Instruments For Africa they will have enough equipment to fulfill an enrollment goal of 200 students next year.

We're off to Lusaka! Last night we packed seven large boxes full of electric guitars, amps, microphones, keyboards, and so much more into the belly of the plane. Currently awaiting connection in London and Sunday afternoon we're in Lusaka!

IFA is very excited to launch the RBC Bluesfest Be In The Band program in Zambia next week! Thanks to the Bluesfest and to all of you for the kind and generous support that made this happen!

Everything seems to have arrived in Zambia safe and sound! Customs is closed on Sundays so everything will clear tomorrow but the crates all look to be in good shape. I met with the assistant director of the National Arts Council and we toured the new BITB rehearsal space together and all looks to be going well.

Special mention to the kind lady at Air Canada who made the extra baggage a very hassle-free experience!

Brad

Since the very beginning of the Instruments For Africa initiative the Ottawa Folklore Centre has been one of our main supporters. Now they need some support of their own to help keep the doors open.

Borealis Records presents Folks for the Folklore Centre – an evening in support of the Ottawa Folklore Centre: July 31st at 7:30pm at Southminster United Church (15 Aylmer Avenue at Bank Street). The concert will feature performances by Lynn Miles, Sneezy Waters, James Keelaghan, Terry Tufts & Kathryn Briggs, Finest Kind with James Stephens and a bevy of OFC’s friends & teachers. Tickets are $25 and can be purchased at www.ottawafolklore.com or by phone at 613-730-2887. Tickets can be purchased in person at the Ottawa Folklore Centre, 1111 Bank Street at Sunnyside.

We just received news that our shipment has arrived in the Democratic Republic of The Congo. FEPADE, the recipient organisation, reports that a container packed with medical supplies from CSI Canada, computer equipment from Universite de Montreal, balls and jerseys from the North Toronto Soccer Club, and musical equipment from Instruments For Africa arrived just a few days ago.

Thanks to all of you for the help and support that made this donation possible. FEPADE works to ease the hardship of living in one of Africa's most volatile areas, and access to good working instruments for their music school has been on their wish-list for some time. Watch for pictures to be added soon!
