skelter
It occured to me today after reading about the induction ceremony that Phish is now qualified! It's been 25 years since Junta. What do you think the chances are?
Velvet
It's inevitable. The question isn't "if" but "when".
lightsweetcrude
Considering Tom Dowd only got inducted in 2012 (just one example), and Rush + Quincey Jones this year, and inductions began in 1986.... Have a seat - might be awhile. ;-)
AD
Artists become eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first record. Criteria include the influence and significance of the artists’ contributions to the development and perpetuation of rock and roll. The Foundation’s nominating committee selects nominees each year in the Performer category. Ballots are then sent to an international voting body of more than 600 artists, historians and members of the music industry. Those performers who receive the highest number of votes - and more than 50 percent of the vote - are inducted. The Foundation generally inducts five to seven performers each year.Phish passes the 25-year criterion but I don't see how the voting body would vote for Phish based on the influence and significance criteria. skelter
I completely agree with AD. It'll be tough because Phish is so insular in terms of their influence on other bands and culture in general, apart from the immediate fanbase obviously. If one was campaigning for this, you could argue that the continuation and modernization of the Dead's business model is pretty important, but that's boring to most people. Hartamophone
Personally, I think it will happen sooner rather than later. Many industry types appreciate what Phish has accomplished and they way they've done it, hence Rolling Stone calling them "the most important band of the 90s." Velvet
And once again I agree with Hart.
AD
Here's the quote:"Given their sense of community, their ambition and their challenging, generous performances, Phish have become the most important band of the Nineties." lightsweetcrude
For sure it will happen.... but they just haven't gotten through the decades *preceding* the 90s yet. ;-)
lightsweetcrude
From Wikipedia:Members of the British punk rock band Sex Pistols, inducted in 2006, refused to attend the ceremony, calling the museum "a piss stain".
