NuFunk.ca in conjunction with CIUT presents the 13th Annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute, the longest running Bob Marley Tribute in Toronto and one of the hottest reggae concerts of the year showcasing the best of Toronto's burgeoning original reggae music scene and raising important food donations for the Parkdale Food Bank.

Toronto's House of David Gang, currently touring in support of their latest release "Good Vibration," will be joined by legendary Canadian reggae singer/actor Michael Garrick, formerly of the reggae group Sunforce, to perform hits by Bob Marley for a heartfel tribute to the reggae superstar and political activist. Special guests vocalists Carole Brown & RaLion will also pay tribute to Marley and perform original songs. DJ Shai (Xxixgon Int'l), DJ Quesquecest (No Wahala Djs) & Brigadier Shazadbad will help set the mood at Toronto's most exciting Bob Marley Birthday Tributes.

The Parkdale Community Food Bank is a grass roots organization, founded by volunteers in 2007 and serves 3,000 people each month.  Located on King Street West in the heart of Parkdale, the philosophy reflects a strong commitment to a client-based model, where respect, inclusion and the dignity of their members is the first priority. The food bank uses a shopping system, as opposed to the more common hamper system to maximize selection and respect member's various dietary needs.  The Food Bank has only one employee and relies on 50 committed volunteers.With no direct funding from any level of government, The Parkdale Community Food Bank raises all of their funds independently and are depend on donations from individuals and events like the annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute.

Dubbed Canada's "Reggae Warriors," House of David Gang is an authentic reggae band that delivers late 70s and early 80s-style Jamaican reggae originals and the classic roots reggae songs of greats such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown; mixed with folk, soul, calypso, afrobeat and hip-hop influences. The features vocalist King Selah and drummer Jahlin Edwards with guitarists Terell Jervis and Jay Cleary, keyboardist Sam Weller and Fingazz, bassist Snappy Homefry and percussionist/MC SunRay Grennan.

 

The band takes its name from the House of David, an after-hours spot on Queen Street West that was a hotspot for artists from the city's burgeoning Rastafarian and reggae community from the late 80’s until the mid-90’s.  After finishing their extensive two month Western Canadian tour this past summer, the band is now focusing on recording new material, working on their new album “Slum” at Slamm Productions in Toronto with the support of an Ontario Arts Council Grant, scheduled to be released mid-2016. While keeping their classic reggae foundation, the direction and feel of the album maintained its roots as well as experimenting with new elements and sounds. The band has also recently released the new single “Good Vibration” as well as a new music video and remix compilation.

Legendary Canadian reggae singer/actor Michael Garrick, is formerly of the group SUNFORCE who had unique flavour of Caribbean Canadian Reggae. Sunforce was a nationally touring reggae band with hit songs Lightning Strikes & Island in the Sun whose videos were on regular rotation on MuchMusic. was a regular act at the Bamboo Club in the late 90s

RaLion grew up with a father from Melbourne, Australia and a mother from Kingston Ten, Jamaica, whose influence and musical tastes helped shape RaLion’s deep-seeded love of reggae. While his early musical influences came from listening to original roots, rock, reggae with his family, RaLion became ‘hooked’ when the "Talking Blues" (Bob Marley & The Wailers) CD came out. Burning Spear has also been a constant source of inspiration due to his use of horns. RaLion has been studying music his whole life and has over two decades of live performance and studio recording experience under his belt. Lion started his singing career working with The Resinators, followed by The Dream Band; he has also worked with The Satellites, Arsenals Ska, and Fujahtive and he has recently moved on to focusing on a solo career backed by The Kangaroots Crew. RaLion currently has 7 released singles available on CD Baby, Spotify, Amazon & iTunes: “Something's Not Right”, “High Protecta”, “They Don't Know”, “Just Because”, “Darling”, “Everything” (featuring Hermina George) and “Struggling” with more to follow by end of this year.

 

 

 

Carol Brown

 

Carol Brown started her musical journey in her early teens as a member of The Loving Sisters ’duo in the late Sixties captivating audiences at Community shows and talent shows in her hometown of Portland, Jamaica. Carol migrated to Canada in 1972 where she continued performing as a solo artist developing her career. She returned to Jamaica a few years later and reunited with her hometown Band who changed their name to The Young Experience with Junior Murvin where she regained her status as resident female singer.  The Band toured across the Island show casing in Night clubs, hotel lounges as well as private and community events gaining popularity and building a solid fan base. Carol recorded several singles at that time covering songs like “Touch me Baby” and “Looks like the end” recorded and produced by The Young Experience Band. She returned to Canada in the late Seventies, early Eighties continuing her singing opening and performing on many stage show with several popular artists’ including Yellow Man, Leroy Sibbles, Sugar Minott, Johnny Osborn, Leroy Gibbon, Half Pint. Carol was also performing artist on many other shows throughout Montreal and Toronto accompanying artist such as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Tinga Stewart, Hortense Ellis, Nana McLean, Lord Tanamo, Ken Boothe and Beres Hammond.  She recorded and worked with producers Pete Weston Micron Record Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo, Joe Gibbs among others. Several of Carol’s singles reached the British Reggae charts like “Touch me baby, I wont Hurt your feeling and Feel so good. Her Accolades include awards as Top Female Performer and top Female reggae singer in Canada Reggae Awards in Eighties and Nineties.
