Hmmm...I've never really listened to Johnny Cash's music (but I have huge respect for him), but his cover of Soundgarden's "Rusty Cage" is on my list of all-time best covers. He took a flat-out grunge(y) chunk of heaviousity, and turned it into an angry folk tune.

I'm not as enamoured with his cover of NiN's "Hurt", but it's in the same vein.

Aloha,

Brad

Boy Named Sue was written by Shel Silverstein, the singer/songwriter/poet/pothead/artist who wrote everything on Dr. Hooks brilliant Revisited album, the children's book The Giving Tree, and countless other amazing contributions to pop culture.

My old band, The Gutterboys used to do a version of Folsom Prison that blended verse for verse with the Sesame Street theme, which was a gas.

Back when Oka was happening, Mr. Cash was scheduled to do a benefit show at Barrymore's for the natives. He cancelled after getting too many threatening letters and such. Which was too bad, as the owner had guaranteed us either the opening slot or at least the oppourtunity to meet Johnny backstage and drink his beer when he wasn't looking.

Another missed chance. Damn protesters.

Really?!? I just loved that dusty, southern blues feel he gave it. I thought it totally suited the song - I was thinking about it as we were driving down to Cinci, with all the big "Jesus Saves!" billboards and the like. Cash's take, to me, just gave it this cynical edge that was perfect. My two-cents anyway. [smile]

I love Johnny Cash. Of my favourite newish songs of his, I love " Delia's Gone " from American Recordings and " Rusty Cage " from Unchained. I've always loved his old stuff, but " Folsom Prison " is my favourite. The man is a living legend and I love how he hates commercial country radio; they being the kind of radio stations that won't play his music.

FOLSOM PRISON RULES!
!!!

Ditto. I read somewhere that Johnny did a version of Neil Young's 'Pocahontas' and Robert Palmer's 'Addicted to Love' for his Unchained album but they were left out. I'd love to hear those.
