Alright, let's switch gears here for a second. If the Senators are such an exciting team to watch, why is it that they have so much trouble filling seats? (This isn't a slight, I'm just trying to get to the bottom of it).

Is it that ottawa is too small a market?

Is it that ottawa can't support it's own team because most of the population have been either leafs or canadians fans for life (as ottawa didn't get their new generation senators until 10 years ago).

Is it ownerships fault? And if so, I want an explanation as to how different ownership can entice the fans cause I don't like blaming owners for a teams problem drawing fans.

Or is it just that people in ottawa have far more to do with their time than go to a hockey game out in fuggin' kanata? I.E. museums, art, culture, music, lovin' for warmth, argueing on a message board about hockey

I just can't understand why the stands are only half full on any given night, unless bryden threatens to sell the team, so fans feel the guilt and buy tickets. You understand what I mean though. Why don't the sens fill up corel as they are one of the league's elite few?

Now that's old time Hockey!

What a great game!

Everyone seems to love the senators so much

and they have only sold out 4 games?????

Maybe you guys should go to some games before they become the Oregon Sens...

This is what you'll be doin' when they leave town

Maybe cuz the stadium is in the middle of fucking nowhere and there is no walk up traffic (a stipulation stated that Sens had to build their stadium next to a major highway so I wont rant about the stadium not being in Lebreton Flats).

The only trouble with filling seats is the expensive, vastly over priced behind the net 3rd level seats (about 2000 of them). They are comparibly priced to the ACC seats in the same section but until Ottawa high tech turns around its gonna be hard to fills those seats every single night.

Ottawa is averaging 17000 a game in an 18500 seat stadium. If you actually watched hockey PhunkC you'd know thats not half full and you'd know the Sens are the best passing fastest skating team in the East. You've confused good D with the trap.

Sorry dude...wasn`t trying to be mean...what I meant was that all Leafs fans have this fantasy mentality that they are the centre of the hockey universe...and they know it all...I know too many Leafs fans out there like this...

At the ACC how many of those tickets are actually fans? Most of them are entertainment expenses I am sure. I know Melnyk has seasons tickets but he lives in Barbados...

Actually, that's the point that I was trying to imply in my multiple-choice question.

I really can't figure Ottawa out. We have a top pro sports team, nobody goes. We host brilliantly talented bands, nobody shows up (Smokestack anyone?).

Is it ownership? Is it the people?

Is it the location of the Corel Centre?? (I tell ya, we'll be driving a lot farther than Kanata to see hockey if the team moves to Tallahassee)

I don't have any answers, but I'm sick of the excuses. If you're a hockey fan you really can't get any better bang for your buck.

(For the record, the Sens average attendance is 16,000 +. But for a 1st place team in a building that sits 18,500, that still sucks.)

I think that the location of the Corel center is a big reason that they have trouble fillin' the sucka'. The average home game starts at 7-7:30. By that time, the Queensway is just starting to thin out, so fans basically have to accept that they'll be sitting in an hour of heavy traffic to go check out their team. But, in my opinion the major problem here in ottawa is the people. We have attendence (attendance? Dave-O?) problems at a lot of events. Bands are another issue altogether. We get some great acts making their way through, but only a few die-hard regulars will show up. Jamband thursdays will turn this nasty trend around though. Every week, I've seen more and more people show up which is really encouraging. Sorry to completely 180 the subject, but talking about ottawa's complacency always gets me going.

I try not to watch too many Sens games (find them boring...) and I don't have TV at home, so I really don't get to watch many games period. But I feel compelled to point out a fallacy (sp?) in the argument that because Ottawa is one of the highest scoring teams they don't play the trap.

The idea behind the trap is that once you have a lead you line up in the neutral zone and shut the other team down. The result can lead to goals, its just not supposed to lead to chances for the other team.

When the trap is played well it will result in frustrating the other team leading to penalties and powerplay goals. And it will force the other team to take risks and make mistakes which will lead to goals for the team playing the trap.

A powerplay goal, or 10 second odd-man rush that leads to a goal DOES NOT necessarily mean that a team is playing exciting hockey even if the score ends up 5-0. Exciting hockey is end to end... even if it ends up 1-0.

So I still say the Sens are boring.

I say fuck all eastern conference teams. which ever team comes out of the east will not have a chance against against the ALMIGHTY REDWINGS! I do agree that the location of the corel center is a major factor reguarding a the attendance woes, but you would think a first place team would draw better. I will have 3 words for all you Sens-Leafs pouters come June--Hey, Hey Hockeytown!

Ps. I don't want to hear any more bullshit out of you Crow you friggin' panty wearing, little sissy! [Razz]

I can`t even remeber the last time the Sens lined 3 or 4 up on the blue line...As far as I can see the D jumps up in the play now creating odd-man rushes, sometimes even at the other end because the D would get caught...

This team is great, there`s no B-S like there is in Toronto...small market, great players, great team...Alot of people think the Sens lose money every year because of lack of fan support...I don`t think people outside of Ottawa realize the Sens still owe for that damn off-ramp on the Queensway...Bringing in an average of 17,000 a game would usually equate to making money...

Why the Sens can't fill the seats:

- Tech meltdown. Many laid-off Nortel employees (myself included) can't afford to go to the games like we used to. (that being said, I've been to 10 games this year, but I bought the tickets back when I had a job.) Normally I would go to 20+ games a season.

- shitty arena location. most other cities (T.O., Montreal, Vancouver, Boston, Detroit to name a few) have their arenas right downtown. We stuck our arena in the middle of nowhere, thus eliminating "walk-up" tickets. Also, Ottawa's public transportation system sucks, so everyone is forced to drive to the games in horrendous rush hour traffic, and pay $10 for parking.

- many fans have been really turned off by the crass commercialism at the games: all that frickin' advertising on the boards, that cheesy over-the-top announcer yelling at you during every stop in play (in both official languages), the "master blaster", those damned MBNA hawkers yelling "Get your free hat or t-shirt" in the concourse (need I go on?). I am sure that's keeping many people away.

- smaller market. Toronto, for example, has a much higher population of rich people than Ottawa. Much easier to sell tickets to them.

(Hey Dave)

I know hindsight is 20/20, but that damn arena should've been built downtown, in the west end. Think of all the well paid civil servants, who would've supported that team, walk-up sales, etc...

They shouldn't be called the Ottawa Sentaors, they should be caled the Kanata Senators.

I hear ya Doc! I think the tech meltdown though is the main reason for the lack of attendance now. I've never missed a Sens

home playoff game (mind you some seasons there were only 2!) but this year I can't afford to go to any playoff games. Unless I can get hooked up with that "I'm Going Too" campaign.

Time to go out and shovel more snow!

P.S. For those outside of Ottawa the "I'm Going Too" campaign is an initiative spearheaded by local philanthropists to give hockey tickets to people who couldn't normally afford them - seniors, welfare moms, street people etc. Unfortunately they're not giving any to laid off techies.

Hockey!?!? Does anyone even watch that game anymore? Anyway if I had to pick a team to win the cup this year, it would have to be The Hartford Whalers, they got a lot of heart this year....Go Whale!!

You guys know there is a war going on right?

Before I get beaten with hockey poles....Just Kidding [Wink]
