  4. The man! KELLY JOE PHELPS www.kellyjoephelps.net TUESDAY MAY 6TH with Alfie Smith 8pm Tix $20 @ Pepper Jack's www.pepperjackcafe.com Steve Earle: "Kelly Joe Phelps plays, sings, and writes the blues. HOLD UP before you lock that in - forget about songs in a twelve bar three chord progression with a two line repeat and answer rhyme structure - though he can certainly do that when he wants to. I'm talking about a feeling, a smoky, lonesome, painful - yet somehow comforting groove that lets you know that you are not alone - even when you're blue. Play on brother." Bill Frisell: "I first became aware of Kelly Joe Phelps when my daughter (who was 9 or 10 at the time) brought home a cd ('Lead Me On') from the Vancouver Folk Festival. "You might like this, Dad" she said. Boy was she right. I've heard Kelly Joe mention that he's been inspired by people like Roscoe Holcomb, Robert Pete Williams, Dock Boggs, Mississippi Fred McDowell, and others. He seems to have absorbed all this (and all kinds of other stuff as well) and come back with something all his own. Sounds like he's coming from the inside out. The bottom up. He's not just playing 'AT' the music or trying to recreate or imitate something that's happened in the past. He seems to have tapped into the artery somehow. There's a lot going on in between and behind the notes. Mystery. He's been an inspiration to me." Tim O'Brien: "When I heard Kelly Joe the first time, I was amazed how it all made so much sense. His music is a wide world with three hundred and sixty degrees of influence.... Kelly Joe is a musical slight of hand master. He pulls world wide sounds out of his guitar."
  5. Tonight will be a rock and roll fantasy.
  6. This is a good thing I think. it would be great if they put all the gear in a museum. A very secure museum. I'd certainly make the trip and spend a day or two going over all those artifacts.

  8. PJC presents: WOODHANDS(Paper Bag Records) BOCCE SLOW HAND MOTEM Plus DJ's : MAC & A.A.(No Standards) SATURDAY, MAY 3RD 19+, Doors open at 9pm, $8 http://www.woodhands.com http://www.myspace.com/woodhands http://www.myspace.com/thebocce http://www.myspace.com/slowhandmotem @ The Pepepr Jack Cafe 38 King William St. Hamilton (905)525-6666 http://www.pepperjackcafe.com Woodhands is an electro-pop duo with a relentlessly energetic live-show and a total disdain for anything but balls-to-the-wall, dirty, sexy dance parties. The brainchild of Dan Werb (vocals, synths, drum machines) and Paul Banwatt (drums, vocals), Woodhands has garnered national press in Canada and was tagged as one of 5 bands to watch in 2008 by Exclaim! Magazine. Eschewing laptops or any pre-recorded samples, the Woodhands boys create the music from scratch just like old-fashioned rock bands, liberally swiping the swagger of glam and the raw energy of punk along the way. Armed with a decidedly un-ironic keytar, dirty analog synths and complex but danceable beats, Woodhands are hell-bent on connecting with their audience and getting the room bouncing. Combine that with an exuberant and nerd-infused sexiness, and it’s no wonder they’ve been dubbed “the sex bomb Tom Jones was talking about… as close to a two-headed indie Timberlake as it gets†(Exclaim!, Dec 2007).
