  1. Glen Close was so amazing at Superball,  from the distance to the stage, the amenities and the folks around us. It was so close I ran back to camp to grab a bag of beer several times each show, just to have cold ones. After leaving and seeing lots of pictures however, I felt like I'd missed out on some of the fest by being a bit less adventurous due to the location.

For Magna I was in the RV section which was great and not a long walk but certainly not as close as Close (!). There really is something to be said about shade and a quiet place to sleep that won't soon be discounted.

If I can get commitment for #'s and can get an RV pass (and find an RV to rent) I will definitely be going that route.

  2. Hey at least it isn't a Tour 1998 announcement when you would have expected the show to be flooded with 19 year olds from the US who are there to just get hammered, legally.

Personally, I think this is a great booking for Bluesfest!

Guess I should take this time to add that Robinson is also going to be revisiting some Black Crowes material with a new outfit entitled "As the Crow Flies" involving guitarists Marcus King and Audley Freed, keyboardist Adam MacDougall, bassist Andy Hess, and drummer Tony Leone. They have a string of dates but nothing really around these parts.

I got tickets for the first show in Port Chester. Can't friggin wait!!

  4. War on Drugs = Dire Straits

Love them to death but I can't get over the similar sound. There is also a song on the new Barr Brothers album that closes with what can only be described as a likely WOD outtake. The name escapes me right now but when you hear it you will know it.

  5. I spent many days for night travelling the US in search of the smallest, coolest club in which to see them and that I could get in to at that time (I was 16 through 18). Although The Hip didn't spend much time hanging around the clubs in the late afternoons following sound checks, The Rheostatics did and they were oh so cool and kind to us wayward hosers. There were more than a few afternoons that we hung around that old Delta 88, scarfing down the remains of the deli trays and cookie platters. I learned about life on those trips, I learned about heroes and I learned about friendship.

My favourite memory of Gord is from the REM show in 1995 at the Molson Ampitheater. Long after REM had left the stage and the crowd thinned out, I was walking with my brother up through the 200s when I heard my name called out. To this day I still cannot believe that Gord had remembered me, especially amidst a crowd of 1000s, and was saying hello and introducing me to his wife and to Mike Myers (!). That was near the peak of the popularity and he had recalled my name and I will never forget that moment. Neither will my little brother who was 14 at the time. At that moment I had ascended into legendary older brother territory and he got more than a few miles out of that story over the years.

This shot is from the Chameleon Club in Syracuse on Apr 27, 1995:

To paraphrase the man himself: We are all richer for having known him.
