    Zeus

That last pic is of Carlin rocking their vintage Juno 60 which is somewhat integral to their sound, or at least they're all very fond of it.
  2. Do people really like Diamond Rings- I don't see how the premise is workable without mascara but that's just me.
  3. But guys he coaches high school football in his free time and donates the uniforms AND he runs a successful business in Missisauga.
  4. That part I presumed was common knowledge. Had a hazy chat with Sean Dean (Sadies) a few weeks back and got to talking about festival express and the Ain't No More Cane and he pointed out that one or the other of his bandmates relatives were in the cluster of people watching in awe (I mean I knew they were on the train but not standing there watching that epic moment).
  5. Is there any relation between Good Brothers and Matt Good - didn't think so maybe just a quirky bit of programming.
  6. thank you! I'm downloading ersatz funk and soul to my hearts content
  7. I'm downloading a whack of pretty generic 'dance party' music for my organization's holiday party and not using a torrent client as it's my work computer. But I'm getting trapped in a vortex of pop-ups trying to use the usual suspects to rip rar's. Is there one established site that's worth signing up for a free membership? Or is one site relatively unvconvoluted in terms of pop-ups and diverstions? I've spent a good 45 minutes trying to pull 'soul complilation' or 'stevie wonder' to not a single solid link.
  8. Bahamas really is a shithot guitarist - handily one of the best in Canada. That said Pink Strat doesn't really reflect how much he shreds which was more evident when he could stretch a bit with say Zeus backing him on the Bonfire Ball Revue. He's got a few faces it seems because he was booked in a softseater here too (one of the Roy Thompson rooms) which is not how I'd want to see him. I trust Dave Azzolini from the Golden Dogs who described him to me as one of the biggest 'monsters' on the guitar I've ever seen, and I trust someone like Velvet who's remarked in the past that Azzolini's guitar playing is incredibly I believe 'versatile' is the word he used. He and Azzolini, and Zeus are all really tight and they all fucking love him and rip his licks. I gather he has an unreleased song called Traffic Cops - one of many that they all love- that he assured me will get released on an album at one point.
  9. If you want to get a sense of how dense and trippy this sound is throw this on a good system or a pair of Sennheiser's or your audio equivalent (then imagine it played note for note live). hW5qaXLqfP8
  10. I know I'm always going on about this guy but seriously with his live band this is beyond Roots 2.0. If there are tickets remaining for the Ottawa stop tonight or MTL on Saturday and you're interested in hip hop, psychedelia, acid soul, deep crates and chops trust me - just go. Black Milk live at Revival, Toronto - review and setlist

    Hip Hop 2010

I'm actually incredibly impressed by Kanye's new one but perhaps more the video and live SNL treatment of Runway largely. In fairness the Hip Hop Album Of The Year is eponymous (it really doesn't get any better for producer/rappers - particularly ones who let their work speak for itself)
  12. David Baxter seems to be anyone in that genre's go to guy - he plays with tonnes of people - I think Kathleen Edwards is his main money gig and what he's associated with most or has been. Haven't seen that band play yet but would like to, I think I saw Rutledge pouring a few nights at the Dakota not to long ago which tends to happen when someone's recording or touring or needs a buck from that crowd.

  14. It was a solid show - I went for Eamon, my date for Turner. He's a little too pretty boy sailor drinking song for my taste- I could see other punk fans (not that that's what he is) wanting to punch him in the gob too. He mentioned in the intro to I Believe: "I believe in Elvis Presley, I believe in Bruce Springsteen, I believe in the Hold Steady". Which I was told by northernwish he does at alot of shows. Pretty much from that point on I just got sour on the fact that I wasn't seeing the Steady and instead this low rent fucker from Winchester, I know it's not his fault he wasn't born in Minneapolis but still.

    Hold Steady Mtl

Sorry is that the entire Benevento crowd in Ottawa? And I'm more pissed at missing the Hold Steady at the Halifax Pop Explosion - their take on The Swish and Navy Sheets would surely reach epic proportions.
  16. So fugging Zeus opened for Belle and Sebastian and were undoubtedly chuffed at their first Massey appearance- meaning presumably our own JerBro Little worked the boards or at least was on hand for the zeus juicing.
  17. Now move onto The Mohawk Lodge (the album is Crimes- just a phenomenal album that keeps on giving).
  18. I think it says that Phish' graphic designer is referencing or 'sampling' in an overt way Genesis' graphic design reflecting a kinship between the bands and artists (kong? and ?).
  19. This speaks volumes except for the XTC (who I suspect is largely one person - or got really into him because Lillywhite produced Billy Breathes).
  20. Definitely agree (hard not to) about The National's, have to admit this is the first New Pornographers I've ever liked (although it's prog poppishness and lovey dovey lyrics suit my Golden Dogs sensibility), have to agree that Four Tet's is a sublimely good album. Gotta agree about Zeus, disagree about Collett. BSS come on fuhgedaboutit.
  21. It's only been out for a couple weeks but already lives up to it's title: Black Milk's Album Of The Year. If you're a fan of the Roots but maybe haven't seen much growth in them in awhile listen to what J Dilla's disciple Black Milk is doing with not just the use of live instrumentation but the way he's able to capture the colour of the drum tones. Not to mention I'd take his live band over the Roots any day for a live Hip Hop group but I know that sounds hyperbolic.
  22. I really like her playing, the broader issue of why women tend to get directed into singer songwriter roles by industry dictates rather than sidewomen or in general the lack of strong female improvising lead players is a challenging issue. I heard a lecture once that analyzed individual issues of Downbeat magazine based on column inches devoted to male and female players for a certain set of years. I think there's some deeper arguments that can be made but I've just always felt like there was an innate hard wiring difference that made men more inclined perhaps (not just chromosome wise but hormone wise) to shred. It is a very phallic, testosterone driven pursuit. I've come to believe though it's basically sociobiology - if it takes 10,000 hrs. to perfect your instrument and for an otherwise totally gawky guy to get laid all it takes for a chick is to say yes.
  23. I buy it too obviously like Wish said, Great Northeastern plans that far in advance and they seem to be trying to be carried by their own high tide and max out on as many 'moments' as they can manufacture these days. It just jibes with everything they're on about and post-Bill Graham I can see very few production companies pulling something like that off with the freight of the original.
  24. I could see it all happen. We're not talking about bring together magnitudinal forces like the orginal, it's slim shades of the original not to mention the developments in concert production and Phish' in particular's acumen for staging varied and complex festivals. I don't see booking the ABros. and Furthur even Levon as being that challenging- it's not like it's gonnna turn into Highgate. People would have to care enough for it to turn into Highgate.
