    Ry Cooder

I got tickets to see him at Massey Hall on June 26th. He's been involved in so many projects over the years, I don't know what to expect. Anyone seem the Coods live before? Anyone know who he's playing with? Whatever the case, should be interesting at the very least and perhaps an amazing show. His album Mambo Sinuendo with Manual Galban is so good and has been on my heavy rotation for years. https://www.masseyhall.com/tickets/ry-cooder https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mambo_Sinuendo
  5. I grabbed a pair as well. Why not! I've seen him once before, at Massey Hall. I remember a good show, killer band, and also walking out convinced that Paul Simon was battling a cold that interfered with his vocals.

  11. New dates are up including at the Sony Centre in Toronto on Fri Aug 3rd.. Yippee! Can anyone hook a brother up with a pre-sale password?
  12. Gave this a good listen the other day, great mix for 2017!
  13. Liking the lists so far, as always! I've separated out my top 3 for this year because I listened to these three albums way, way more than any other new albums. Signing up for Spotify was a game changer this year -- otherwise I'd have a lot more under the "albums i haven't heard yet" category! 2017 TOP ALBUMS: (a three-way tie!) Mike Gordon - OGOGO Barr Brothers - Queen of the Breakers Ryan Adams - Prisoner NEW-IN-2017 ALBUMS I'VE ENJOYED: (In order) The War on Drugs - A Deeper Understanding A. Savage - Thawing Dawn Beck - Colors Ryan Adams - Prisoner B-Sides Kamasi Washington - Harmony of Difference Land of Talk - Life After Youth The xx - I See You Jeff Tweedy - Together At Last 2017 ALBUMS I TRIED TO GET INTO BUT NO LUCK THUS FAR: Bonobo - Migration Feist - Pleasure 2017 ALBUMS I HAVEN'T GOTTEN AROUND TO LISTENING TO YET, BUT I PROBABLY WILL LATER: Gord Downie - Introduce Yerself Kevin Breit - Johnny Goldtooth & The Chevy Casanovas Mavis Staples - If All I Was Was Black Tinariwen - Elwan LCD Soundsystem - American Dream The National - Sleep Well Beast Courtney Barnett & Kurt Vile - Lotta Sea Lice
  14. Happy b-day Velvet! Enjoy! Great to see you at the Kamasi Washington show at the Danforth a short while ago.

    WHISKY!!

    This is the stuff! https://cdn1.masterofmalt.com/whiskies/p-2813/pulteney/old-pulteney-navigator-whisky.jpg?ss=2.0
  16. Nice! He's on my bucket list as well so I was thinking about it. From what I've read it sounds like this is a warm up tour for a much larger tour in 2018, so I am holding out for that.. Pretty jazzed about it!
  17. I missed that show at Massey Hall, but love this band and really digging their new album. I believe I saw that they gave a tip of the hat to Neil with their encore? The current European tour with Barr Brothers opening would be absolutely killer!
  18. So very sorry to hear this news. RIP BradM. I did not know Brad well, but he was such a fixture in this scene for such a long time - at shows and of course in this forum. It was always a pleasure chatting with him during a set break, and I've enjoyed his recordings over the years. His presence will be missed. Aloha BradM!
  19. ctober 26th 3030 Toronto (with The Sisters Euclid & special guest, Perry White) October 29th The McMichael Gallery Kleinburg The Group Of Seven Guitar Project October 29th the Cameron House with Ian DeSouza 7-9pm November 5th the Tranzac, Toronto with the Woodchoppers November 16th Moonshine Cafe with The Beat Heathens November 19th the Tranzac, Toronto with Makeshift Island NOVEMBER 26TH JOHNNY GOLDTOOTH AND THE CHEVY CASANOVAS CD LAUNCH AT LULA LOUNGE TORONTO November 30th 3030 Toronto (with The Sisters Euclid & special guest, Rob Piltch) December 28th 3030 Toronto (with The Sisters Euclid) January 13th Calgary (with Harry Manx) January 14th Banff (with Harry Manx) March 25th PAC St.Catharines (with Mark Lalama Trio) Breit’s latest release, the 11-track instrumental Johnny Goldtooth & The Chevy Casanovas is set for release on Stony Plain Records, November 2017 and it features his interpretations of a mythical character in a twang world. Joining Breit on the album are Vincent Henry (Amy Winehouse, Tom Waits), Michael Ward Bergeman (Yo Yo Ma), Davide DiRenzo (Cassandra Wilson) and Gary Diggins (R Murray Schaffer). If Johnny Goldtooth seems familiar, it is because all of us know someone with a little Johnny Goldtooth in him – outlandish, eccentric, raw and wild. Breit has always written in character, and while these songs have no lyrics, he has brought the same attention of voice to all the rambling and enigmatic sounds captured in Johnny Goldtooth & The Chevy Casanovas.
  20. There's a more complete setlist over here: https://www.setlist.fm/setlist/mike-gordon/2017/the-phoenix-concert-theatre-toronto-on-canada-5be24714.html I was looking forward to this show from the start, but they exceeded expectations for me and IMHO they killed it!! WOW! Such a tight band. I forgot how great Scott Murawksi is on the axe - had seen him with Max Creek a few times 15-20 years ago (yikes) but not since then. Cactus was a wizard on the bass. Nice northern touch with Sugar Shack. Mike was at the merch table after the show - I got to meet the legend! The Phoenix security staff were as horrible as I remember them from shows past. Taking their time with questions and through searches for everyone passing through the door, resulting in a long line to get in and me missing the first 2 songs. I saw them almost not let one person in because her pupils were allegedly dilated, and the security person said that this woman would have to wait for a medic or something to come and assess whether she is ok. For another person they confiscated/stole their rolling papers. Booooo.

  22. Cool, thanks for posting that. Looks like Billy is credited for only playing on one of the tracks I guess? Also, would be interesting to unravel the mystery of whether or not Garcia plays on any of the tracks. "It is suggested that Garcia plays pedal steel on No You Can't Help Yourself and maybe on other tracks including Oh How She Rides." This led me down a bit of a wormhole reading about shows that The Good Brothers playing in CA around that time. Like the 4 night run at the Fillmore West with New Riders of The Purple Sage heading (with Jerry on pedal steel), supported by Boz Scaggs and James and The Good Brothers. 25,26,27,28 February 1971. This blog mentions that Jerry sat in on banjo with The Good Brothers. http://lostlivedead.blogspot.ca/2009/07/february-27-1971-fillmore-west-james.html And here is some more on shows The Good Brothers did in CA: http://jgmf.blogspot.ca/2011/03/james-and-good-brothers-courtesy-of.html
  23. I've been digging the new album. Looking forward to this one big time! It is Nuit Blanche that night too.
  24. Haven't heard of them, but I did notice that NOW magazine is giving away a pair of tickets to the Toronto show: https://nowtoronto.com/contests-and-promotions/the-marcus-king-band/
