    Gord Downie

I got two decent seats for the show in The Hammer.
  2. The other day I went to my first underground metal show which was easily the loudest show I've been to. If you go see Weedeater, Author and Punisher, Today is the Day or Lord Dying, don't forget your plugs! I wore ear plugs which brought it from a 6 to a 3.
  3. NXNE, Canadian Music Week, Bestival, Way Home.. there are lots of others as well. I'm saving a lot of money this summer as none of the TO festival lineups that I have seen are doing much for me. Hoping that the TURF lineup will be good!
  4. DevO here with your report back. We showed up at about a quarter after 3 PM with plenty of time to stroll through the car mechanic's parking lot which was playing host to a dog-themed community gathering directly across the street from Lanois' studio. There were free ice cream sandwiches being handed out which was a cruel joke given how windy and cold it was already outside. Lots of dogs milling about but sadly no Maple, no Banjo. Lanois played just inside the garage of the mechanic's shop. There were about 100-125 people or so. His trusty entourage was there, lookin freaky and taking photos and assisting (?) Lanois while he did Flesh & Machine era stuff. Lanois' first song was on the pedal steel. It was loud enough that two of the three speakers were fried by the end of the song, with smoke coming out of the one that I was standing near. 2nd song was The Maker, with an "old friend" of his whom I didn't recognize on a small drum kit. Up next he did one more on the acoustic, which I did not recognize and which was about the woman who owns the car shop (the venue). Not sure if he actually wrote it for her or if he just changed the lyrics to make it about her. But I hadn't heard the song before. Next, about 3-4 Flesh & Machine songs, and polished off with JJ Leaves LA back on the pedal steel. Certainly worth the bike ride over!
  5. Looks like fun. Got a setlist for their first night too? I understand they were supposed to play two nights in a row (Tues-Wed) but got bumped to Thursday because of the Raps playoff game. If any of you were watching the Raps game on Wednesday, Eddie Veddar and one other guy from PJ were sitting in the front row at the Raps game on Wed night.
  6. Nice! Hope to see you guys there, if this weather shapes up.

  8. I'm hoping to pop in for this! Lanois' studio is right across the road. He has played at the tiny cafe that is also on this block a few times.. Can't recall the name of the place but it doesn't comfortably hold any more than 15-20 people.

    RIP Prince

RIP. I love the NY Times article floating around about Prince performing with Tom Petty at the R&R Hall of Fame for George Harrison's induction in 2004. Also just read this reflection from Trey: http://www.jambase.com/article/trey-anastasio-talks-night-phish-partied-prince
  10. Also at the end, Dave Matthews dedicates a stirring rendition of Crash to "edger from Canada".
  11. I clicked on the sole Africa pin which led me to this nice little 45 min doc of Trey and Dave Matthews' trip to Senegal. I knew they had gone to Africa together years ago but don't recall having read any of the details. They went to Dakar, Senegal and hung out and performed with Orchestre Baobob. Includes Trey teaching OB how to play Bouncin Around The Room. Also interesting to hear Trey talk about how that song was inspired by West African genres of music.
  12. Here is an Einstein like idea: Someone should book him for a side-gig while he's in town!
  13. I've been listening to Google Play this morning, streaming radio, and a lovely piano rendition of Wingsuit took me by surprise. Someone by the name of Holly Bowling is behind this - anyone here heard this or seen her play? http://www.hollybowling.com/ Holly Bowling is a classically trained pianist who began playing piano at the age of five. There’s one major distinction, however, that separates her from other similarly studied musicians. That is Holly’s devotion to the legendary rock band Phish. Having attended over 300 shows by the Burlington-based quartet, she became obsessed by their famous rendition of “Tweezer” from Lake Tahoe on July 31, 2013. It led Holly to transcribe this 37-minute improvisational masterpiece note-for-note and arrange it for solo piano. The process, both painstaking and fulfilling, inspired her to transform other Phish songs and well-known live jams into solo piano interpretations. Holly’s breathtaking renditions of Phish classics like “It’s Ice,” “The Squirming Coil” and “Harry Hood” serve not only as a tribute to the modern day kings of jam, but stand on their own as fully developed classical pieces. The past year has seen Holly expand her repertoire into the realm of the Grateful Dead, including an “Eyes of the World” based on the band’s spectacular exploratory June 18, 1974 performance at Freedom Hall. Using classical piano technique to reinterpret these jamband luminaries, Holly’s live performances infuse new with old, tradition with surreal, and creates a concert experience like nothing else in the music world.
  14. Really nice version of Black Muddy River in this comp. My favourite so far of the 4 songs I've heard. (I never thought I'd be giving props to Black Muddy River!)
  15. No one rocked the Chapman Stick as much as the guy from Blue Quarter.
  16. Check out this bad boy: http://www.torontosketchfest.com/tscf-troupes/hello-thunder-bay/ Join host Dave Bidini (Rheostatics) for an evening exploring the blurred lines between comedy and rock ‘n roll. Some of Canada’s top musical comedians will join a stellar lineup of Canadian musicians sharing their weirdest, wackiest and most hilarious stories from the road. March 7, 2016 - 8:00pm Randolph Theatre (736 Bathurst St., Toronto, ON)
  17. My friends and I got lawn'd for a 3 night ticket package for SPAC. Does anyone know if we would receive an individual ticket for each day, or a wristband that covers the entire weekend? If the former, we can consider looking out for upgrades over the coming months and selling individual evening tickets as we go. If the latter... we will most certainly be stuck on the lawn. Either way, happy to be going to see Phish for 3 nights in a row this Summer! Haven't done that in a long time.
  18. Par for the course with other big festivals announced so far, I only know a small handful of the bands on the list and, of those, there are only a few I care to see. I'm saving so much money!!! (I'm sure there are many a great band on these lists that I do not know about.)
  19. For over 20 years now the legions of fans of Guitarist - Composer - Musicologist, Ry Cooder, have been eagerly awaiting his return to the concert stage.
