  1. Clapton will be sitting in 3/19 and 20. Wish I could make it from Victoria for those two nights.
  2. Is it, though? An infringement by the Mint on the rights of the Dogwood Initiative to freely express itself could be saved by section 1 of the Charter, which states the following: If a Charter challenge was brought' date=' the Mint would likely argue that the circulation of currency free of defacement and political activism is necessary in a free and democratic society, and therefore a limit on the freedom of the Dogwood Initiative in this case would be justified. I think a [i']Charter challenge would have a lower likelihood of success than a challenge focusing on the purpose and intent of the Currency Act. Obviously, the ones the Mint makes in-house are legal tender from the get-go and not altered after the fact. As for flipping a coin, like I said above I suspect the intent of the legislation was to defend against the defacing (and de-circulating) of currency. Actions like that (or throwing them in wishing wells, etc.) don't impact the ability to use the coin in the future.
  3. So here's the section of the Currency Act that the Mint appears to be relying on: Link I can see how this is a legal conundrum, despite my unwavering support for the Dogwood Initiative. The coins are being used for a use other than currency. That said, they are being used as currency concurrently, and the alternate use does not detract in any way from their purpose as legal tender. I do not imagine such a double-use would have been in the contemplation of the legislators who drafted the Act, however I would think that their intention was to ensure that currency is not permanently defaced or destroyed, which is not happening here. The decals do not in any way diminish the value of the loonies, or the ability to use them as currency, so I think they might be OK. The fact that they are removable decals and not stickers should help here. (Funny how I have been putting off doing legal research for school all day, but have all kinds of motivation to read legislation about this issue).
  4. Yeah, so The Mint really isn't enjoying this. Link
  5. Bill Bailey will not get to fly for free. Axl died after Use Your Illusion.
  6. I am currently on hold with WestJet, who has a one-day $14 seat-sale on for people with the last name Hart, Sweet, Rose or Valentine. I've been told that having Hart as my first name is good enough. I think this single event might make up for years of traumatic "Hart the Fart" chants as a youngster.
  7. Awesome seeing this on here. This is an initiative that has been launched by the Dogwood Initiative, a kick-ass NGO based around the corner from my house here in Victoria (and where I almost worked). People here seem to be really receptive to the campaign, and if nothing else it is bringing awareness to the issue.
  8. Lots of love for Savannah here, and I'll add some fuel to the fire. If you're looking for awesome Southern food and high-quality hospitality, I would hit up Mrs. Wilkes Dining Room for lunch. Delicious and authentic Southern food (served in copious amounts - there is no question you will leave full), with pretty unique rooming-house atmosphere. The place is legendary and for good reason. Safe travels.
  9. I would be surprised if TicketMaster is proven to be funneling tickets to re-sellers to be put up on TicketsNow. Delighted and vindicated, but very surprised. That said, I fail to see how their control of the primary ticket market and finger in the pie of the secondary ticket market does not constitute a conflict of interest. It is absolutely not in their best interest, as owner of TicketsNow, to ensure that tickets are distributed in a fair and equitable manner. Captcha gets hacked? That shouldn't bother them, as that would mean that secondary sellers now have handfuls of tickets, and there's a good chance that TicketMaster will get in on that action. It will be interesting to see how this plays itself out.
  10. The wheels are currently in motion for a Victoria date for the 19th. I don't think it will happen, given that it would mean shows for seven straight days for them, but stranger things have happened and it is currently being worked on.
  11. Despite the question mark, that is a rather misleading thread title. In other news, I saw an original Appetite-era t-shirt in the window of a thrift store yesterday. I went in to ask about it and my name was put on a waiting list. At $42, I won't be too sad if they don't get down to my name.
  12. That list can't be real because Paul McCartney isn't a jamband.
  13. Such a rad book. Picked it up in Seattle last fall and devoured it in short order. Sort of a non-fiction Americanized version of High Fidelity. (I was also impressed that Sloan got some love on his mixed tapes). Two thumbs up, all-around.
  14. I'm by no means a "longtime head," but am someone who would normally be making summer plans around these shows. That said, "The Dead" don't really excite me the way they did when they toured a few years ago, and my summer plans are way too up in the air to be making plans to hit Phish shows not knowing how much of a gong-show things are going to be. If Phish announces a late(er)-summer West Coast run then I'll think about getting excited, but for now I'm happy to let the madness ensue while I sit on the sidelines strumming my mandolin.
  15. Yes indeed! I'll be making the trip from the Island for that one, and maybe hitting Seattle on the 18th. A good friend of mine manages the biggest club venue here in Victoria. I just sent him an e-mail pointing out that the band has nights off both before and after the Commodore show.
  16. I have absolutely no idea where I'll be this summer, so I've had to hold off on tickets for now. It's a little frustrating, but aside from the really tough ones (Asheville, Fox) I'm not worried about getting tickets as the shows approach.
  17. Hell yes. After seeing these guys countless times during my days on the East coast, there wasn't much about there most recent work that had me excited. Looking forward to seeing them again and being reminded why it was that I started seeing them in the first place.
  18. fluffhead77, your opinion is incorrect. Actually I haven't listened to any of it yet. I'm looking forward to giving it some time when I get home tonight. Thanks for the heads up, Kev.
  19. Thanks, AD. I'll check that stuff out.
  20. Heading to the mountain for a day or two next week. Any suggestions on where to book a place? Looks like there will be four of us. Probably looking for a little more than a hostel, but we're a long way from Fairmont territory.
  21. YouTube forum be damned. This is cool enough for the main page.
  22. I find it hilarious that in most of the bitching I've heard about Dead tickets, people add in the price of their drugs to come up with the total cost of a show. Rocking a show (relatively) sober would seem to save many people the cost of an entire ticket (or two tickets, in this guy's case), but it's apparently much easier to complain about ticket prices than it is to not get wasted at the show.
  23. If ever there was a band meant to play at George's Roadhouse in Sackville, NB, it's the United Steelworkers of Montreal. The place is a bona fide roadhouse, on a lonely road across from the train station on the outskirts of town. That will be a beauty of a gig, I'm sure. As for this end of the country, I suppose it's greedy of me to wish they were playing Victoria again. This might just be reason to jump on a ferry and head to the mainland on April 4th.
  24. Good eye, man. Also: Brett. Britt? Yeah, Brett. Britt? No, Brett.
