  1. Yeah, I picked up the disc at the show last night and am really enjoying it. Their harmonies actually come across better live (something that speaks to their talent, for sure) but the CD is nothing to sneeze at. I hope you dig it.
  2. I saw Fleet Foxes in Victoria last night and it was a stellar show. They're a five-piece out of Seattle signed to Sub Pop, and I guess they could best be described as folk-pop with a slight dose of country. They had the best vocals of any band I've seen in a long time: absolutely soaring harmonies that smacked of Pet Sounds-era Beach Boys and were additional instruments, as opposed to an after-thought. That said, their instrumentation had the thunder of the Sadies or Spector's wall of sound from time-to-time and was great in and of itself. All-in-all a fantastic show from a band that has been getting some much-deserved attention of late. MySpace Link (I've been humming "White Winter Hymnal" all day).
  3. Brad, I'm not sure whether to give you a "Hell yeah" or a "bummer, man", so please choose whichever is appropriate. I know you'll make the most of the freedom you'll be enjoying for the next little while - I anticipate tapes out the wazoo: bradm - The Severance Sessions Taped at bradm's house, Thursday morning Disc 1, Set 1 1. Ambient alarm clock 2. Rushing Water-> 3. Flushing 4. Bed Reprise* 5. Waking up for Lunch *Last weekday "Bed Reprise" 11/14/97, The Tonsilitis Sessions
  4. -Still in school -Would often (but not always) rather stay in than head to a bar -Am a triathlete
  5. Yeah, I didn't know that either, Ollie. This also surprised me:
  6. Given what a bunch of lushes most of us are, I can't believe that everyone hasn't tried this. Shower beers are cold and delicious. If you've never been you're missing out.
  7. I love a good shower beer when I'm getting ready to head 'er out, especially when I'm pressed for time. Every so often I'll leave an empty on the shower ledge (a la Davey Boy, I suppose) for a few days to remind me of how pumped I was to head to a show on Saturday night. It helps get through the odd Tuesday.
  8. Funny you mention that, as I was planning to make a related post. Here in Victoria, the vast majority of people thank the driver when they get off the bus. Even if you're getting off at the back and seven people immediately before you have said thank you, it is almost always said. I thought it was the coolest thing when I first took the bus out here. And for those who complain about the OC, try navigating a transit system that doesn't have an online or phone trip planner you can use, nor are there route numbers or times on the vast majority of stops. I didn't know how good I had it in Ottawa.
  9. Whoops, I thought this thread was a roll call.
  10. He had to be close to Whitehall for probation and drug court, yes. I also think he had moved to NYC (a couple of hours south of Whitehall) before that, though. I read an interview where he talked about how much he liked living in NYC because everything he needed to make music was constantly at his disposal (eg: it's easier to put together a studio orchestra on short notice in New York than in Burlington). He still has a place in VT, though.
  11. Definitely a cool place to spend some time. I personally recommend the Capitol Hill neighbourhood. It's walking distance from downtown, but is much more genuine and organic (less touristy, I suppose) with great eating and shops.
  12. brah i totally got a text from my buddy who was there. had kick ass seats halfway down the kosher aisle. he had his stealth rig with him (hartmans has been tight about taping since people started selleing "cleanup in aisle seven: Nero plays the frozen novelties section"). i'll up something as soon as i get it. Rule #1 of the setup:
  13. Anybody knocks me into the boards I'm going to piss all over myself.
  14. Happy birthday, you magnificent law geek.
  15. Nice! They're playing here in town tonight and I'm on the fence (for reasons almost entirely financial). I think I'll throw this on the iPod for my run and hope that it gives me the nudge I need.
  16. I made the switch to binders for my CD collection a couple of years ago. The liner notes are with the CDs in the binders, but I still haven't been able to get rid of the boxes, thinking that they have something to do with the integrity of the collection. I'm finding it increasingly tough to justify the space all of these empty cases are taking up. Thoughts? (As you can see, I'll go to any length to avoid the massive cleaning project I'm supposed to be undertaking today.)
  17. Such a shame, and made even worse by the fact that he initially seemed to be doing alright. That said, at Rothbury when Dave mentioned Leroi's absence and said that he'd be back soon, I pointed out to my girlfriend that the look in Dave's eyes told a completely different story. You'll be missed on stage left, big man. Rest peacefully.
  18. Some friends of mine met while stranded at Pearson and have since been married.
  19. I've been twice and highly recommend it. Made a special trip once from Lake Placid and it was well worth it, and another time stopped in as I was driving from Coast to Coast. If you only allow a half day you'll be disappointed, especially if they have quality temporary exhibits up while you're there (I was lucky enough to see one on Dylan's early years). Pretty much just memorabilia on display, though there are some listening stations and stuff like that. I'm also a big fan of the music store that's in the museum. Awesome back-catalogue gems from all of the inductees. Nothing you can't find online, but pretty rare to see that extensive a vault in a brick-and-mortar shop these days.
  20. Cheers, guys, thanks. I'll plan to bump the thread with good news when applicable. (And it's Dude, Davey Boy).
  21. Yeah, those have been bugging me for a while. Partly for the low level the discourse always sinks to, but also because of the ways in which people show their true colours when allowed the anonymity provided by the internet. There's way more latent racism and hatred in this country than those who subscribe to the "polite Canadian" stereotype would care to admit.
  22. Hey Folks. I don't know too many of you personally, but I could really do with some vibeage right about now. I'm passing up an incredible opportunity to work with an environmental NGO in Vancouver, in the hope that a job I've applied to in Switzerland will work out. The job in Vancity is a tough one to get and an even tougher one to pass up, so this is a pretty big roll of the dice. Any and all positive energy appreciated. Peace, Hart
  23. Damn that sucks. Reminds me of Matt Costa's full range of gear being swiped from inside the Garrick Center in Winnipeg last year (there was a thread on it here). Can't get a whole lot lower in terms of property theft without really stooping.
