  1. unfortunately Brodie, you are probably right. These guys have played Hamilton the ghost town one too many times, and are just far too good to be missed. Fans of the Quiet Sun, or early ELP, the second lineup of King Crimson should be all over this. This is the real deal folks, don't be fooled by a Wednesday bill, this one goes straight for the jugular.
  2. is this a new album? or more downloadable treats Mr. Adams is usually so gracious with? Everything besides Gold this guys does floors me.
  3. This Wednesday and Friday, two of Canada's premier progressive rock bands combine thier monolithic live shows into one incredible bill. Winnpeg’s wondrous prog rock warriors, Mahogany Frog, are on their way back to Hamilton to promote their fifth record, aptly titled, Mahogany Frog Do 5. The quartet of Jesse Warkentin (guitars, keyboards), Graham Epp (guitars, keyboards, trumpet), Scott Ellenberger (bass, trumpet) and Jean Paul Perron (drums, percussion, electronics) have been making inspired instrumental music together for a decade now and are feeling more in sync with each other than ever. In between recent tour stops, Graham and Jesse took some time to get View up to speed on what the band’s been up to since their last visit to the Steel City. “We’ve played 126 shows since we released On Blue in the spring of 2005,†as Epp declares, “with more than 100 of them being outside of Winnipeg. We’ve really honed our take on touring Canada. We’re still driving the same van and use mostly the same equipment. I think we all feel pretty comfortable on the road. A lot happens on our tours where there’s no discussion; we all communicate through ESP. After a show Scott takes charge of packing the van, Jesse shmoozes and tries to find us a place to crash (which usually ends up being a party), I sell some records... but then that might change for the next night... who knows? That ESP finds its way onto the stage as well, and that's really where it started. “In between touring, we managed to record Mahogany Frog Do 5 over the course of eight months. We released it ourselves here in Canada this April and it was picked up by New York City based label, Moon June Records for worldwide release in August.†The guys are quite proud of Mahogany Frog Do 5 as they took some extra time and care in the studio to ensure thrilling results. “When we recorded On Blue we were frantic,†recalls Warkentin. “We were a bit younger, and we wanted a new record immediately. The songs sound more stripped down, and the recording was done as quickly as possible. Some of the tunes on the record were barely finished, and some we came up with in the studio. A tour was booked before it was even pressed. It sounds like we sound live: raw, loud and weird. The tunes on Mahogany Frog Do 5 were all well rehearsed by the time we hit the studio; we had been performing the majority of them for a while at our shows. They are all numbers that took a while to compose and arrange... I think we were able to incorporate a more mature and patient sound into our usual frantic and explosive musical ejaculations. “The songs are still bold and challenging, but we’ve attempted to arrange them in such a way that they unfold themselves to the listener. We gave ourselves the liberty to take our time with recording, and made sure everything was dialed up exactly how we wanted it... the right tones, the right instrumentation, the right sound effects and samples. We wanted it to be catchy as hell on the first listen, but we wanted there to be enough hidden little sounds and layers so that it would continue to offer new experiences to the listener. The result is something that sounds unmistakably like us, but dense, orchestrated and saturated.†Being a band with a somewhat ambiguous appeal, I had to ask if they could provide a stereotypical profile of a Mahogany Frog fan and Jesse delivered the following, “Our fans seem to be all shapes and sizes, but I suppose you can classify ‘typical’ Frog fans into three types. There’s the 16– to 22–year–old classical/jazz band nerd, aspiring to acquire rock n’ roll sensibilities, generally unstylish yet extremely friendly and polite. Then there’s neo post/art–rocker, wearing a farmer’s cap and plaid shirts, with a moustache/beard, who loves Godspeed, Tortoise and Mogwai. Finally, you have the 40– to 60–year–old prog rock fanatic with a grey mullet, custom earplugs, wearing a Genesis or ELP T–shirt, who is extremely friendly, and buys everything from the merch table, even if they already own it.†The Frog are not only excited to return to Hamilton to play to all three of those types of fans, but also to share the stage with fellow instrumental prog freaks, the local musical menace that is The Battleship Ethel. “Don’t get me started on Battleship Ethel!†as Epp gushes on, “We played with them last April and I was just floored. I remember looking around the bar and seeing the rest of the Frogs standing there with their jaws on the floor. Besides their impeccable chops they have a fantastic tone. I completely respect their choice of instruments; the Rhodes, the tubes, the tubes...†Jesse concurs, “Yes! Yes! We love those boys. They are one of our sister bands. A group that is obsessed, just like us. To them, music is the only thing that matters... music played by crazy people on weird equipment at high volumes.†V [MIKE BELL] www.myspace.com/mahoganyfrog The Battleship, Ethel is cheese and wine; a first pressing; leather coat; compound interest; friendship or a tree. The Battleship Ethel have lots of live recordings and unreleased material up on their myspace. Definitely worth checking out... www.myspace.com/thebattleshipethel The Book of Gnomes is an electroacoustic collaboration between Nick Zubeck (Barzin, Polmo Polpo, Great Lake Swimmers), James Castle (Elkton Hills, Phil Stabile, Cable, R., Cable, W.), Marshall Bureau (A Northern Chorus, Erika Werry, Nick Zubeck), and Ben Bowen (Great Aunt Ida, A Northern Chorus, Ronley Teper). The music, primarily in the form of multi-part instrumental "indie rock jazz" suites, combines elements of pop and folk music with ambience and improvisation.
