  1. I just found this on Jambase and I thought I'd share.. I know Baj loves a little Cale, and I'll definitely be interested in hearing this! http://www.jambase.com/headsup.asp?storyID=11208 PREVIOUSLY UNRELEASED RECORDINGS MADE BY J.J. CALE DURING HIS EARLY YEARS TO FINALLY BE RELEASED A REMINDER OF THE LASTING IMPACT THE ENIGMATIC CULT FIGURE CONTINUES TO HAVE ON ROCK MUSIC REWIND: UNRELEASED RECORDINGS In Stores October 2 J.J. Cale A trove of previously unreleased songs recorded by American music icon J.J. Cale during his early, and arguably most influential, years will at long last be released. Featuring vintage tracks from Cale's legendary tenures at Shelter Records and Mercury Records, Rewind: Unreleased Recordings' will be in stores on October 2. Recorded at the same time Eric Clapton introduced Cale's songs "After Midnight" and "Cocaine" to mainstream audiences, Rewind is a remarkable collection of songs that epitomize the distinctive sound and style that Cale built. "Hearing them took me back to what I was doing then and where I was when I was doing it," says Cale. "It's like looking at old family photographs." Not only are Rewind's eight Cale-penned songs a time capsule of musical treasures, he also personally selected several covers to include on the album. Cale devotees know that it is exceedingly rare for Cale to record another songwriter's material, making these songs particularly extraordinary. He puts his personal stamp on "Golden Ring," written by Eric Clapton, Leon Russell's "My Cricket," the Waylon Jennings track "Waymore's Blues" and Randy Newman's "Rollin'." Throughout the album, Cale is accompanied by some of the greatest musicians of the era, including guitarist Richard Thompson, Tim Drummond on bass (Neil Young), Glen D. Hardin on piano (Merle Haggard, Elvis Presley, Gram Parsons), Muscle Shoals studio band member Spooner Oldham on organ, and drummer Jim Keltner (Bob Dylan, John Lennon) among others. The tracks had been under the care of Cale's longtime producer, Audie Ashworth, since they were recorded in the '70s and early '80s. When he passed away in 2000, Ashworth's wife Bonnie stepped in as guardian of the tapes. More than a decade has been spent trying to bring these recordings out of storage and into the hands of Cale's devoted fans but a variety of circumstances long delayed their release. Bonnie Ashworth explains, "We feel the time is right to share these recordings with J.J. Cale's fans. We are very excited to have found a home for them with Time Life. They released the critically-acclaimed DVD To Tulsa And Back: On Tour With J.J. Cale last year, and we believe this is a great fit for this project as well." A&R veteran Bas Hartong, who worked alongside Cale and the Ashworths throughout the project's entire journey, adds, "We at Time Life like to focus on uniquely American artists and musicians and no one fits that description better than J.J. Cale, whom I have had the pleasure of working with for many years. Cale has managed to stay highly influential to several generations of artists while never really changing who he is or how he approaches his craft." One of the most unassuming and talented figures in American music. J.J. Cale has made a major impact on American music through the effect his style and songs have had on major artists spanning genres and generations. He is credited with originating the so-called "Tulsa Sound," which combines his laid-back guitar sound and almost whispered vocal style with influences from rock 'n' roll, country, blues and jazz. Beyond his own fervent worldwide cult following, his songs and style have achieved a more mainstream profile via covers of his songs by artists as diverse as Johnny Cash, Eric Clapton, Santana, Jerry Garcia, The Band, Bryan Ferry, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Captain Beefheart, Widespread Panic and Waylon Jennings. Dire Straits' Mark Knopfler and Eric Clapton both attribute much of their sound to Cale's influence. Unaffected by his success as a songwriter and his iconic status among rock stars, Cale insists, "I'm a guitarist and a songwriter and I got lucky." "I'm not a showbiz kind of guy. I had the passion to do music as much as anybody. But I never wanted to be the patsy up front," he modestly demurs. "And I still don't want to be famous."

  3. Haha!! Yep, that'd be it.. It's bigger than a bar, a small super dirty venue on a street called Short Vine.. Super duper ghetto!! There's a laundromat/bar across the street called Sudsy Malone's (do your laundry and drink at the same time basically) that always has super heavy metal going on when you come out of Bogart's..
  4. There once was a note, pure and easy, Playing so free like a breath rippling by. The note is eternal, I hear it, it sees me, Forever we blend it, forever we die. I listened and I heard music in a word, And words when you played your guitar. The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering, And a child flew past me riding in a star. As people assemble, Civilization is trying to find a new way to die. But killing is really merely scene changer, All men are bored with other men's lives. I listened and I heard music in a word, And words when you played your guitar. The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering, And a child flew past me riding in a star. Gas on a hillside, oil in the teacup, Watch all the chords of life lose their joy. Distortion becomes somehow pure in its wildness, The note that began all can also destroy. We all know success when we all find our own dreams, And our love is enough to knock down any wall. And the future's been seen as men try to realize, The simple secret of the note in us all. I listened and I heard music in a word, And words when you played your guitar. The noise that I was hearing was a million people cheering, And a child flew past me riding in a star. Today is the day, the sound travels mountains, Flowing, blowing each man in it's wake. Destroying itself in the end with vibration, There's nothing on earth it's challenge can take. Excepting one note Excepting one note, pure and easy Playing so free like a breath rippling by. Excepting one note, excepting one note There once was a note, listen There once was a note, listen

  7. Yay!! Ari will be back! (I won't be there, but I'm excited anyways cause you're back!)
  8. Yay! I'm glad you gave them a chance!! They really are amazing live.. I remember when I first heard them (a live show.. but on CD), I wasn't too impressed. Seeing them live is really key. I was hooked after seeing them the first time years ago.. Oh, and OB1, they also play "dyslexic" versions of songs which means the song is: "broken up, similar to an inverted version, but the song structure is played out of order or not immediately following each other. The band might play the end of a song in the first set, then start off the second set with the beginning. This would be considered a dyslexic version of the song".. Such a fun band, and as soon as you get to knowing their songs and stuff, the shows get quite fun trying to name the next song and such.. They also have 2 rock operas, The Hot Air Balloon and the Chemical Warfare Brigade, and a lot of their songs come from those 2 stories. Check out www.discobiscuits.net for more info/setlists/song lyrics and stuff!
  9. Early in the morning the sun wouldn't shine I was walking down the road not feeling too fine Saw two men with a bottle between 'em This is the song that they were singing Lord preserve us and protect us We been drinking whiskey for breakfast Lord preserve us and protect us We been drinking whiskey for breakfast I stopped by the steps where they were sitting I couldn't believe how drunk they were getting They passed that bottle and I took a little sip Took a little more and I just couldn't quit Lord preserve us and protect us We been drinking whiskey for breakfast Lord preserve us and protect us We been drinking whiskey for breakfast One by one the people of the town Heard our ruckus and they all came town Pretty soon all the streets were ringing With the sound of the whole town laughing and singing Lord preserve us and protect us We been drinking whiskey for breakfast Lord preserve us and protect us We been drinking whiskey for breakfast (LoS)
  10. Well, I've been kicked and beaten, It don't bother me no more. Don't offer me no pillows, When I'm just fine here on the floor I've so many wounds That I hope they'll never mend But I can raise my glass up For a beer with all my friends 'Cause I'm the Barfly, I like to drink, that's what I do All these women in the world... Why did I leave mine when times were so rough All these women in the world... Why did I leave mine when times were so rough But when you left me baby, you left me needing more than enough Well the ocean's my home I'm living on the liferaft alone Well the ocean's my home I'm living on the liferaft alone Now they call me flat stir crazy But I'm just sittin here at the bar flat on my throne Well I've been kicked and beaten It don't bother me no more. Don't offer me no pillows, When I'm just fine here on the floor I've so many wounds That I hope they'll never mend But I can raise my glass up For a beer with all my friends 'Cause I'm the Barfly, I like to drink, that's what I do

  17. What a great time!! We got there right in time for DSO's Thursday night set. It was an amazingly long set that was a special Jerry Garcia tribute (it lasted a little more than 5 hours).. It was an original setlist, and included tunes like Run for the Roses, Help > Slipknot > Franklin's, Box of Rain, Terrapin, Cassidy, Dancing in the Street, Big River, and lots more that I'll slowly remember as time goes on.. They encored with 4 songs, but I only remember How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You) and Not Fade Away.. Donna Jean and Lisa (DSO's "Donna Jean") were sure taking the stage by storm during Not Fade Away.. It sounded so soulful and sincere, and I enjoyed seeing them smiling and singing together. (I'm 80% sure Ripple was an encore song.. If not, then they played it during the show) David Gans also came out and sang/played a couple songs. Anyways, it was an amazing show and it kicked the Vibes off right! The next day was super cold and rainy, which is always a drag. Our crew pretty much hung out and partied around our camp waiting for things to let up. We could hear the music a bit from the stage, but the good thing was that RadioVibes was on broadcasting the concerts live. We turned up the car radio and had a disco party at our own camp (disco balls aplenty) for most of the morning. Railroad Earth was awesome on Friday afternoon. Even though it was cold and rainy, everyone was dancing and smiling at the stage. They played mostly new songs that I've never heard, but they threw in a few old ones, like Smilin' Like a Buddha. I did wish that they played a few more older tunes, but I would never be disappointed by RRE.. Also on Friday was George Clinton and P-Funk.. The last 2 times I've seen them I promised myself I would never see them again, but since everyone else in my group wanted to see them, I ventured to the stage with them. I was honestly surprised at how much they rocked out!! We were standing behind the sound booth and couldn't see the stage, and my theory was that as long as I didn't see the madness on stage, the music was good! But really, it was super funky and I really enjoyed their set.. The Deep Banana Blackout set was a James Brown Tribute, and it sounded amazing! (We enjoyed it back at our disco party) Saturday was a hot, beautiful, sunny day, and we started it off by seeing the Ryan Montbleau Band, which our friend Rich highly recommended. Such high energy, funky, jazzy beats! I really had a lot of fun dancing to them! These guys are really gonna take the scene by storm soon! Very entertaining! Look into those guys, they'll be in Toronto in September! Donna Jean & The Tricksters are always a good time.. This is their setlist: Set 1: No Better Way, Weight of the World, Till the Morning Comes, Isn’t It a Pity, American Beauty, Loose Lucy, Shelter, Spirit in the Sky*> Jam> All I Gotta Say, Reno Comment: *1st ever performance We missed Assembly of Dust to eat and get ready for Keller. So I was a bit disappointed by Keller's set. It was originally supposed to be Keller and the Keels, but apparantly the Keels flight was delayed or canceled, so Keller was a bit unprepared. Instead of having his array of instruments on the stage, the Keel's instruments were there, so it made it hard for him to do his usual stuff with his usual instruments. Still, I love Keller, so I had a good time. He played Doobie in My Pocket, Best Feeling, Bob Rules, I Wanna Jump Your Bones, Victory Song, and others.. Bob Weir came out at the end and forgot the lyrics to Brown Eyed Women, and other Dead songs! In my opinion, Bobby messed up Keller's last few songs. Keller had to keep taking over the lyrics and everyone was just confused at what was happening. I was really worried about how Ratdog's set would turn out.. Les Claypool sounded good from where we were walking around by the ocean. We had a good seat for fireworks that were going on outside of the Vibes while Les rocked out. We went back to the stage for Ratdog, and it was CRAZY!! Bobby messed up the first few verses of Shakedown Street, but nobody seemed to care.. After that mess-up, he played a Dylan tune (my foggy head can't remember which one), and actually remembered all the words! That was followed by the Ratdog song Money For Gasoline. They also played Dark Star, Eyes of the World, St. Stephen, The Eleven, and encored with One More Saturday Night and Ripple.. It was such an amazing show!! Bobby was wearing semi-short shorts!! Yay!! Sunday was super hot as well, but we sweated through Dirty Dozen Brass Band, which was super funky and fun! That alone tired us out, and we went to lay in the shade and pack up, listening to Buddy Guy and the Wailers from our site.. It was a fun festival overall with lots of good music! There were so many people there, a lot larger of a festival than I thought.. Bridgeport was an interesting town, and Seaside Park was beautiful! I absolutely loved the sea breeze and the salt air as I danced to the wonderful music!! We'll post pictures soon, hopefully!
  18. Haha!! For the most part, the police and security ROCKED at the Vibes! I love this picture! I woulda loved to see that..
