  1. 9pm-midnight... Funky Jazz... $5 Steve Boudreau - Rhodes Wayne Eagles - guitar Jake von Wurden - bass Matt Ouimet - drums (sorry for the late notice!)
  2. 3 JIMMYS ~ Stop the Arms Expo House Concert ~ Friday May 15th ~ Intimate & Funky With singing & Toning for Peace featuring Theda Phoenix from Vancouver - www.thedaphoenix.com http://www.myspace.com/3jimmys An exciting evening of funk jazz pop rock reggae & crystal singing bowls! Location: Mike’s House — 524 Tweedsmuir Ave., (613) 729-2125 http://maps.google.ca/maps?q=524+Tweedsmuir+Ave,+ottawa,+on Time: 8:00 PM Date: Fri May 15th 2009 Donation: ($10 suggested) proceeds to Coalition to Oppose the Arms Trade (COAT) - http://coat.ncf.ca/ The 3 JIMMYS met while tree planting in the woods of Northern Ontario near Hearst. Between seedlings, they would sing themes from Mary Tyler Moore, Colt 45 Beer, Davey Crockett, and Monty Python; these would later become mainstays of their sing-along repertoire. Tunes that groove and are inspired by the loon, wolf and night sky: For all we Know, Lost in the Stars… Inspired by trips to town: How Dry I Am, Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin), Zippity Do Da; and a lost pet by a trailer-dwelling herb-grower from Geraldton, Chameleon. A crazy guy who we met was Old Dan Tucker from Alabama. The sight of Barrhavan, upon returning to Ottawa, reminded us of Little Boxes on the hillside… 3 JIMMYS: Jeremy Sills—Voice, Trumpet, Singing Bowls Rob Frayne—Rhodes, Moog, Sax Wayne Eagles—Guitar Martin Newman—Bass Mike Essoudry—Drums Alvaro de Minyana—Percussion
  3. Thanks, Brad! Nathan da Silva, one of my students at Carleton, will play an opening set approx. 9-10pm. He's a fine player (and doing his grad recital at 7:30pm Saturday at Carleton). I'll then play a (mostly) improvised trio set after 10:30pm or so w/ bassist Joe Hincke and drummer Russ Crawford. Should be fun!
  4. No Glenn tonight... Thinking I might be better going w/ our first names - BRUCE WAYNE, the other crime fighting duo...
  5. Jesse's been running a noon hour concert series at noon on Fridays in the Music department (A900 Loeb). Pay what ya can... Much of the series has been adjunct faculty (I'm playing next week - will post info) - Jesse's played several times. Great player, great guy... I've heard Jesse's duo CD w/ Kevin, "Collisions". It's terrific - a really compelling live set recorded at the Guelph Jazz Festival. I'll add a link when I have one...
  6. (perhaps someone can add this to the Calendar) From Jesse Stewart, Carleton University Music professor & percussionist - Jesse_Stewart@carleton.ca On Wednesday Feb. 25, my good friend guitarist Kevin Breit will be in town doing a clinic and a performance with me in Studio A in the Loeb Building (9th floor, A Tower). I'm still working out the details on this one, but it looks like things will get underway at 7:30 pm and tickets will be $15. Kevin and I have a new duo record that just came out last week on the C3R label titled "Collisions". Kevin's list of performing/recording credentials is staggering--it ranges from work with Bill Frisell to Norah Jones, from Holly Cole to Cassandra Wilson, from kd lang to the Guess Who. In my estimation (and that of many others) he is one of the finest guitarists in Canada, if not the planet. Seriously.
  7. Between a death in the family, email crash and moving house, I'm well outta the loop here... I heard mention that Sara and Brendan are off to Mexico? Ms_Zimmy?
  8. Props to Sarah and Brendan for their feature in this month's Ottawa magazine. Nice article!
  9. Mark Levine's "The Jazz Theory Book" (Sher Music Co.) William Leavitt's "A Modern Method for the Guitar" series (Berklee Press) Dave Stewart's "The Musician's Guide to Reading & Writing Music" (Miller Freeman Books) etc...
  10. Canada Hardwood Flooring - my brother-in-law's company: 613-729-7504
  11. I had a great time at the Ottawa show. Different yet complimentary writing/playing/singing/on-stage styles. Lyle composes compelling material rather devoid of cliches/conventions (yet still familiar), while Hiatt more embraces the cliches/conventions while slyly subverting them - if that makes any sense...
  12. Hope some of you can make it out: 3 Jimmys @ Irene's Pub Saturday February 2/08 9:30pm, $8/door Jeremy Sills—Voice, Trumpet, Singing Bowls Rob Frayne—Rhodes, Moog, Sax Wayne Eagles—Guitar Martin Newman—Bass Mike Essoudry—Drums Alvaro de Minaya—Percussion ~ w/ special guests The 3 Janes on vocals & trumpets ~ http://www.myspace.com/3jimmys
  13. I really dug it... End didn't bug me. Extra features w/ Cronenberg/Mortensen were cool too...
  14. OK - though Crowded House was listed as being on ACL in the local TV schedule (Ottawa cable channel 64).
  15. TV schedule was wrong - show started at 11pm not 11:30pm and it was Gretchen Wilson and some other, not Crowded House.
