MRG Live presents
Jazz is Dead: Alphonso Johnson, Steve Kimock, Pete Lavezzoli & Bobby Lee Rodgers,
Sun, Dec 10 2023
Doors: 7:00pm
Queen Elizabeth Theatre – 190 Princes’ Blvd, Toronto, ON
Doors: 7:00pm Show: 8:00pm
Jazz is Dead – The acclaimed All-Star instrumental ensemble, famous for interpretations of classic Grateful Dead songs with jazz influences, returns in 2023 to celebrate its 25th Anniversary. Co-founder Alphonso Johnson will be joined by Steve Kimock, Pete Lavezzoli & Bobby Lee Rodgers, performing Grateful Dead’s ‘Wake of The Flood’ marking it’s 50th Anniversary, in addition to other beloved selections. Jazz Is Dead XXV ‘reunites’ two greats! Steve Kimock & Alphonso Johnson, who together in heavyweight post-Garcia Grateful Dead off-shoot The Other Ones together with Bob Weir, commanded the instrumental prowess of that band. Formed in 1998 by bassist Alphonso Johnson (Weather Report, Santana, Bobby & The Midnites, The Other Ones), drummer Billy Cobham (Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Bobby & The Midnites), keyboardist T Lavitz (Dixie Dregs) & guitarist Jimmy Herring (Aquarium Rescue Unit, Widespread Panic), with drummers Rod Morgenstern (Dixie Dregs) & Jeff Sipe (Leftover Salmon) replacing Cobham in 1999, and guitarist Jeff Pevar (CSN, David Crosby CPR, Phil Lesh & Friends) replacing Herring in 2000, recorded 3 acclaimed albums, the second of which ‘Laughing Water’ in 1999 was in fact an instrumental ‘Wake of The Flood’ reinterpretation – so there is precedent. That album also featured Derek Trucks, Donna Jean Godchaux & Vassar Clements.

Been listening a lot to the Band podcast - the host did a great eulogy for Robbie.
I've read a few books about The Band, including Levon's This Wheel's on Fire: Levon Helm and the Story of the Band..
The Levon & Robbie in-fighting is legendary, and Levon's Book and the Band of Brothers paint radically different stories of the Band.
Regardless of the truth, Robbie's songwriting and guitar playing are undeniable.
RIP Robbie

My friend Chris aka Marker Starling, is an amazing musician who's keyboard playing reminds me of Garth Hudson (maybe also because of his bushy beard!) - He's playing in Toronto next week, definitely worth checking out. I posted his latest video below, End of Summer, which is a great comical video he shot in LA. Love to know what you guys think of it!

Live on stage: Marker Starling – Full 6-piece band
Adv $18.00 at Showclix TicketsPresented by Transmit Presents at The Garrison, Toronto ON
In the Fall of 2022, Marker Starling supported indie rock legends Stereolab at Toronto’s HISTORY and Montreal’s MTELUS. Earlier this year, the Marker Starling band celebrated the release of their new album Diamond Violence by playing their debut as a 6-piece band. It was a miraculous night, and the Thursday, July 6 show at The Garrison promises to be the summer edition of the same miracle.
Beginning as the solo project of Toronto’s Chris A. Cummings, who performed for many years as Mantler, Marker Starling became a trio with the addition of Jay Anderson on drums and Matt McLaren on bass. Andrew Scott joined on guitar in 2018, and since 2021, the band has included acclaimed Toronto singer-songwriter Dorothea Paas on guitar and vocals. The newest member of the band is classically-trained percussionist Ed Squires, who also performs in U.S. Girls and Badge Époque Ensemble.
Known for his signature style of “melancholy party jams,” Cummings has also performed extensively in Europe, the UK, and Japan. Since 2010 he has worked with UK-based Tin Angel Records, and since 2016 with Tokyo-based 7e.p. Records. His newest video, End of Summer, was shot in Los Angeles by up-and-coming production team Goldwing.TV
Marker Starling is pleased to be joined by The Crime Family, whose unique brew of styles is fresh and arresting.

Musical chemistry is a rare, intangible thing. But for Andy Platts and Shawn Lee, the creative force behind Young Gun Silver Fox the unmalleable, unspoken connection that gives their work such a unique and distinctive sound was apparent from their first experiences in a studio together. Taking their name from Andy’s standing as youngest band member and Shawn’s resplendent silver locks, and sensing they were kindred musical spirits, the duo set about crafting their 2015 debut West End Coast, bonding over a shared love of the smooth sounds of ’70s pop-soul and artist’s such as Ned Doheny, Hall & Oates, Steely Dan and the breezy, west coast stylings that had been in Shawn’s musical DNA since his youth. -
Would be cool to see ya Edger! Much love
