The Billboard chart topping “Grateful Dead of reggae” will perform at Lee’s Palace on Thursday, May 21, with Ontario bands Street Pharmacy and Reggaddiction to open the show.

Giant Panda Guerilla Dub Squad (GPGDS) formed in 2001 in Rochester, New York. A mysteriously fertile area for developing the U.S. reggae scene, the city has ties going back to 1981 when Lee “Scratch” Perry recruited his entire backing band from Rochester. The Upstate NY region became early supporters of GPGDS, while its members were in high school, playing weekly gigs to cut their teeth. In these formative years, Giant Panda began to explore their songs with an experimental approach, mixing in layers of afro-beat, R&B and americana, while keeping their roots firmly planted in reggae rhythms and lyrical content. Around 2005 tapers began to notice and soon after one of the band’s first Colorado shows received homepage placement on the popular taper website Archive.org. Almost overnight GPGDS became a mainstay on the jamband festival circuit.

After five years of synthesizing their sound on the road, GPGDS released their first studio album Slow Down (2006) proving their abilities as songwriters and setting the stage for a string of eclectic releases, topping the Billboard Reggae chart twice along the way with Steady (2014 Easy Star Records) and Make It Better (2016 Rootfire Cooperative). In 2019 the band released two singles, “Stop Fighting” and “Cool It,” followed by their first release of 2020 “Good Love.”

Now two decades into their careers Giant Panda has become an institution, widely regarded as “the Grateful Dead of reggae” and continuing to grow with the world around them. See them perform at Lee’s Palace in Toronto on Thursday, May 21, with Ontario bands Street Pharmacy and Reggaddiction opening the show.

  5. I feel ya bro.

i have some reservations against cover bands although I have played in those types of bands over the years.

This show will be a lot of fun, the band has arranged the music for a full horn section, keys, bass, guitar, drums, lasers, multiple vocalists..

it's not about artistic expression, its about having fun.  Going out on a Friday night is about having fun - and Daft Punk doesn't tour so here's a way to enjoy their music played live.

Some great musicians on the line up members of Tupperware Remix Project, Maylee Todd, KC Roberts & Live Revolution, The Royals...

Toronto’s own 8-piece band plays the music of Daft Punk – return to the stage in January 2020.

    Lazo & Exodus

Lazarus J. Finn (aka Lazo) began his music career at 15 years of age with a band called Black Blood, whose very first album charted #2 and received extensive airplay in the Caribbean. Soon after immigrating to Canada, Lazo formed his own band, Unity, to showcase his original compositions. Upon relocating to Toronto, ON, he created Lazo Reggae in Toronto, and released the well-received recording, "Satisfaction Guaranteed." Lazo subsequently produced two solo CDs, "Something Real" and "Impetus," for RAS records in Washington, DC. He was the first Canadian artist signed to the label.

"Impetus" was such a strong effort that it was the first independent album to chart on Vancouver's Z95.3 (Top 30). Lazo's music video, "Crucial," produced by Video Fact and RAS Records reached #3 on the charts in Guyana, South America. It also received extensive play on the Caribbean Satellite Network (CSN) and rotated heavily on Black Entertainment Television (BET) in America. Lazo's 2010 release, "Passin Thru" (Y.T. Records) brings out the best in him. It is a true testament to his songwriting abilities, a must for industry and fans alike.

Lazo tours tirelessly throughout the United States, Canada, and the Caribbean. His list of international venues and festivals is ever growing, such as Brazil's Carnaval de Salvador, El Salvador, Argentina, and more. In 2010, he toured the United States and South America as a member of the world-renowned Wailers. The group was Bob Marley's original backup band, featuring Aston "Family-Man" Barrett on bass, and the legendary Keith Sterling on keys. The South American leg of the tour included African Reggae Star, Alpha Blondie.

Additionally, Lazo fronts for Craig Martin's Classic Albums Live: Bob Marley - Legend. He performed at venues such as Hard Rock Cafe, House of Blues, and many theatres across the US and Canada. Lazo's band Exodus is an amazing tribute to Bob Marley. His spirited show to the famous reggae artist is a must see.

Delivering cross-over vibes, refreshing vocal harmonies and powerful instrumental riddims, Reggaddiction is one of the top bands within the Canadian reggae scene. Single releases from the band’s highly anticipated upcoming Neil Young reggae tribute album have received stellar reviews and national airplay on CBC Radio. The band opened up for the legendary Sister Nancy in early 2019 and is currently planning an upcoming album tour.

    Rayzalution (Ray-zuh-loo-shun)

Rayzalution is an all-female reggae band from Toronto, Canada. Combining heavenly harmonies with exceptional musicianship and dynamic performances, this powerhouse of talented female musicians capture their audiences with their very first note. In November 2019, Rayzalution set out on a USA East-Coast tour with the queen of reggae Marcia Griffiths and veteran dancehall
artist Lady G. During this tour, the band performed in multiple states alongside these iconic women. Despite the band being together for only three years, the band was fortunate to share the stage with multiple international reggae acts. The band is currently in the studio working on their first EP to be released in 2020. Rayzalution objective is to represent and showcase female musicians and to deliver reggae music expressing the love, peace, togetherness and spirituality needed in our world
today! Rayzalution is a force to be reckoned with in the industry.

Always known for their uncompromising social and political messages, the Canadian collective hit harder than ever on 9 new tracks, outing the hypocrisy of modern day politics, police brutality in North America and the everyday struggle of the working man. Led by chief songwriter and arranger Pierre Chrètien, the band continue to evolve their sound, drawing on a broad palette from their trademark Latin, Afro and Caribbean styles to some of the UK’s political sounds of the early ‘80s, the era of The Clash, The Police, 2-Tone and frontline reggae. "We were basically messing around with the idea of creating our own brand of 'Afro-punk' ”, remembers Chrétien, “something with the aggressive, in-your-face energy of punk rock or free jazz, but still backed by the hypnotic, pulsating grooves of tropical music."
The album takes the listener from carefully targeted sonic missiles to more reflective thought-provoking moments. ‘Police The Police’ starts the offensive: “I wrote this after my neighbour was beaten to death by Ottawa police during an arrest,” explains Chrétien. “The authorities downplayed the incident and the officers were working the next day like nothing had happened.” ‘House Of Cards’ takes a thinly veiled swipe at the current US administration on an infectious disco groove: “lies within lies within lies... like so many Russian dolls”; ‘Boat Rockers’ challenges us all to look beyond accepted norms and ‘General Strike’ documents the frustrations of the working class as the pay gap gets increasingly wider; ‘Slumlord’ shines the spotlight on dodgy landlords while the brilliant closer ‘Well Runs Dry’ laments modern day living, with its confused pace and mundane obsessions, remembering simpler days gone by.
Leading their field for 17 years, the three-time Juno Award-nominated band have constantly moved forward, and remain an in-demand live band worldwide. They have played to audiences in close to 30 countries across North America, Europe, and Africa and have shared bills along the way with heavyweights such as Stevie Wonder, Bob Dylan, and Femi Kuti. Mastered by The Carvery, ‘Chaos Theories’ will be released on LP, CD, cassette, and all digital formats on September 13th worldwide (Do Right / Strut Records), The band tour Europe and Canada during September, October and November 2019.
