  5. I grew up listening to Stompin' Tom - I first knew the songs through my parents singing them. In fact, my parents met on a blind date in Sudbury at a Stomin' Tom show, while my Dad was working there at INCO. Not sure if the show was on a Saturday, but it was love at first sight and that song has always held a special meaning to me and my family. I also share the same birthday as Tom - Feb 9th. The connection goes a little deeper as I was playing in a band several years ago and we did Stompin' Tom covers as the opening act for Donnie Dumphy, 3-4 years back. The lead singer of that band, from Saint John, NB, was fighting city council to get to designate an official Stompin' Tom day, and in his crusade at a concert in that city, Stompin had my friend Jason stand-up and Tom acknowledged him as his biggest New Brunswick Fan. That gave special credibility to the band even though the band was punking up the songs with power chords and even reggae versions of Tom's classics. I never did see him play, My parents tried to get Tom to come play their wedding anniversary, but it was really out of their price range. I was always fascinated with Stompin' stories. A friend of mine Dave Gunning got a chance to play with him and he told me it was a part of his contract to drink with Tom after the show. He told me that Tom smoked 3 packs of cigarettes a day, I think he's lucky to have made it to 77 years old. Sad for Canada to lose Tom, but i think his eulogy was so sweet and special, I know he will be remembered well.

Second, you might ask, “Reggae music exists in Korea?†Yes it does, and it’s growing in popularity. There are a handful of Korean reggae inspired bands that have been playing for several years now including Seoul's Windy City. You’re probably saying to yourself, “It’s Korean reggae music. How good can it be?†That’s a fair question to ask. However you might be surprised because it’s quite good. Windy CIty, formed by front man Kim Ban Jang combines elements of African music in addition to reggae and salsa, creating a fusion of new sounds while simultaneously paying homage to classic roots music. Having played around the world, including festival gigs in Japan, Brazil, England and even Jamaica, Windy City is a serious band who's international presence continues to expand. www.windycity.co.kr Throughout their career House of David Gang has been known for their uplifting roots rock reggae sound reminiscent of Kingston, Jamaica's music scene in the late 70's mixed with a modern roots Canadian feel. The band takes its name from The House of David, an after-hours spot on Queen Street West that was a hot spot for artists from the city's burgeoning Rastafarian and reggae community from the late 80s until the mid 90s. Now with the release of their album "Reggae Warrior" on NuFunk Records, the band continues to pave their own road as Canada's hardest touring reggae band. Currently #10 on the Canadian Reggae Music Charts! www.houseofdavidgang.com Visual Artist Tai Kim is a Canadian artist of Korean decent and is a member of The Propeller Center of Visual Art and currently teaching at the Koffler Center of Art. She's been following the work of Windy City for sometime and helped connect the band to the Canadian Music Festival. Tai runs the Art department of the House of David Gang, designing and making t-shirts, mini comic and .created the artwork for the band's new CD "Reggae Warrior." She often sings back up with House of David and her own roots rock reggae band Roots Vibe. She is a part of a Canadian-Korean-Jamaican cultural movement in Canada and has provided her artwork for the poster of this show. More on Tai Kim here: http://taimiru.wordpress.com/ Promoted by:
  7. I'm pretty sure they brought Dangerous Dan back to play with the Allmans Brothers 4-6 years ago when they did a show at Molson Amphitheatre and Warren could'nt make it so they replaced Warren with Dangerous Dan and Chuck Leavell (who was in town rehearsing with the Rolling Stones). can anyone confirm this? Also think that I saw Dan play with Dickey Betts when he played Opera House 2005ish.

  11. I don't think the market would bear paying $5k unfortunately, but if there's any kids with deep pockets out there could be an amazing party. I think we really pulled out much of the Slip's fan base when we did Surprise me Mr. Davis...and to not divulge too much, we lost of a guarantee 1/5 of that. I've done about 8-10 shows with the Slip - they are such a niche act, it's really tough to make the math work for them. Best would be if they released a new CD and were on an actual tour, could bring out some new fans too.
  12. for those who missed it, it's going to replay every day this week.. listen to it here: http://snd.sc/Y6zErZ

  17. Hi Folks, So this past year has been a little transitional, I was rocking some great Canadian Projects... NuJazz Festival, Evolve Festival, House of David Gang CD Release, Havana Cultura, shows with Jose James, Lee Fields, Afrika Bambaataa, Stickybuds, A.Skillz, Fat Cats, Easy Star All-Stars etc... all the while living in Manhattan. It was a little crazy with so much traveling and being away from my wife. Now I'm focusing on finding a job here in NYC, if any of you have any contacts in the music, events, marketing or sponsorship industry or any general tips etc.. that would be great. Will keep you posted on my progress. Please wish me luck! -J
