  1. [blurb] The Jimmy Swift Band released the first video from their new album Weight of the World to the public this week. The animated video is the result of collaboration with Halifax's Copernicus Studios (Nelly Furtado, Universal Soul, Spesh K) who specialize in what they call 2.5D animation, combining classic animation techniques with modern 3D computer graphics. The video can now be requested on Much Music and previewed through the following link: www.belowmemusic.com/turnaround For more on The Jimmy Swift Band, visit www.thejimmyswiftband.com www.myspace.com/tjsb [/blurb] The video chronicles the journey of the band, portrayed as puppets, from simple minstrels to revolutionaries, as they try to survive in the newly industrialized world of the execubots, giant corporate machines who've taken control of the land. Video Producer Bradley Cayford had this to say about the videos production: "It's hard to believe how much a song can represent so many things to so many people. In the case of The Jimmy Swift Band video, "Turnaround", every statement, every lyric and every chord struck so much meaning that it was almost as if the colours came right from the song. The colours and seasons reflect the mood of the song and the paint comes alive to bring true organic music to the forefront once again in an age similar to that of the industrial revolution and depression of the early 1930's. Imagination and creative instinct runs wild when the art is celebrated and not formulaic. Truly it feels as though it is time to turn around and show the world who we all are." "...I really hope that everyone in the world gets a chance to see this video and listen to the song because I think there's a message there that can really inspire a lot of people." The video's release comes hot on the heels of this years East Coast Music Awards Nominees announcement, in which Weight of the World has been given the nod for Rock Recording of the Year. This would be the bands second ECMA, having won the Alternative Artist of the Year award for their Debut album, Now They Will Know We Were Here in 2002. The new album is currently available in stores nation wide and will soon be offered in digital format through Apple's iTunes music store. The video can now be requested on Much Music and previewed through the following link: www.belowmemusic.com/turnaround For more on The Jimmy Swift Band, visit www.thejimmyswiftband.com www.myspace.com/tjsb

  8. Jazz By Genre V was an impressive ensemble of talent that took place at Toronto’s Mod Club Theatre, and one that could teach world leaders a lesson. The tone of the evening was set by D.J. Dalia who spun classic hip-hop and soul. Eric B. and Rakim, A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul were called upon a few times. The host of the evening was spoken-word artist, CBC Radio’s Anne-Marie Woods (A.K.A. Amani) whose introduction to the live portion of the night was a poem which chronicled Hip-Hop from its beginnings with Sugar Hill Gang’s “Rapper’s Delightâ€, and followed the timeline right up to the night itself when she had the crowd chanting “Hip-Hopâ€, “Jazzâ€, “Hip-Hopâ€, “Jazzâ€, Hip-Hopâ€, “Jazzâ€. She enticed us to “explore something you may not have heard before†and promised “a musical renaissanceâ€. full article: http://www.thelivemusicreport.com/clubs/modClub/jazzByGenreV/jazzByGenreV.html Rhythmicru & Irie Band GURU

  11. Hummer Wins First Place in Environmental Design Challenge 2015 Design would Help the World Breathe a Little Easier Canadian Auto Press The buzz around this year’s LA Auto Show has been impressive. The downtown convention centre was swamped with a large number of international and North American debuts of concepts and production cars. The event continues with the announcement of this year’s Design Challenge competition, hosted at the auto show. This year’s theme is environmental sustainability, with teams designing a vehicle for the year 2015 that has a net environmental gain, a life expectancy of 60 months and is 100-percent recyclable. The winner was the Hummer O2, designed by GM’s West Coast Advanced Design Studio. As opposed to destroying the environment, a nasty reputation that Hummer has earned for its products' thirst and ground-crushing capabilities, the O2 was designed to help the earth. Aside from those grass-covered cars, the O2 is the only vehicle we know of with bodywork that’s capable of producing clean air. Each body panel on the SUV is filled with algae that takes in carbon dioxide and releases pure oxygen into the vehicle and then out to the environment. The algae are sustained in clear panels via a two-way valve that is located in the corner of each body panel. The valves are controlled by electronics that monitor the amount of CO2 and nutrition that the algae are receiving, and optimize the flow to aid in algae cultivation. Given that vehicles around the LA area spend 95-percent of their outdoor time in the sun, it only made sense to allow the car to photosynthesize. But the O2 does more than just act as a mobile atmosphere filter, it’s also transportation. Keeping with the environmentally friendly theme, the O2 is powered by hydrogen. Each of the four wheels has a self-contained hydrogen fuel cell which powers hydraulic motors. The cells receive their power from a hydrogen tank that’s been placed in the centre of the vehicle. On this theme of environmental friendliness, the design team even took the vehicle's wheels into consideration. Featuring Active Tread tires, the O2 takes the term "tread lightly" to a whole new level. Individual strips shift out and inwards to create a knobby pattern for improved grip when off-road, while the strips lay low and smooth to reduce rolling resistance while on paved roads. If the O2 were ever to be built according to its original plans, it would be made of 100-percent post-consumer materials. The frame of the vehicle is made out of lightweight aluminum while the seats are to be made free of volatile organic components (harmful chemicals). From start to finish and everything in between, this could very well be the greenest Hummer ever conceived. The Hummer O2 is the second concept that GM entered in the LA Auto Show Design Challenge, and won with. Last year, the GMC PAD Concept, which took the form of a mobile loft, received first prize.

  13. http://www.nowtoronto.com/issues/2006-11-30/music_pulse.php From Now Magazine: Pulse My Week in the Clubs By BENJAMIN BOLES Bassnectar of the gods The use of the word "electro" in recent years to describe various dance music tangents has always been controversial. Much of the contemporary work that gets saddled with the term has very little to do with the early-80s breakdance sound that it traditionally referred to. Unfortunately, "electro" is the term most often used in the new millennium, so we're stuck with it for the time being. As such, it's an inelegant but useful word for the texture that's infiltrated so many parts of the dance music landscape, from the house and techno worlds to indie rock, not to mention hiphop and pop. That said, the last place I expected to be struck by how ubiquitous it's become was the NuFunk party at the El Mocambo Friday night, when promoter Jay Cleary described the vibe as "electro-hippy" to me while we watched Bassnectar (aka San Francisco's Lorin Ashton) tear it up for an energetic and appreciative crowd. And, sure enough, when you looked around the club, there were a lot of people you'd likely have seen at Om Festivals and such, but the tunes Bassnectar was dropping were as close to what you'd hear at a hipster party as at a hippie throwdown. His take on it is a bit more organic, but you've still got those distorted synth bass lines, the booming 808 kick drums and that ADD-addled cross-cross-genre approach that somehow managed to work in an old swing track along with the breaks and hiphop you'd expect. To be fair to Ashton, though – who's probably cringing at being associated with the term – he's been doing it this way for much longer than this has been a trend, and there's as much dub reggae as electro in his musical soup. The only reason you can frame it this way is that his brand of eclecticism and appreciation for the raw has become the thing everyone is reacting to, or, in some cases, against.
