Just read the new book by drummer Tom Stephens called Best Seat In The House: My Time in the Jeff Healey Band while on vacation. I couldn't put the book down. There are incredible stories including a tale about getting his big break by meeting & playing with BB King at Expo '86 and a lot of anecdotes of tour antics by Jeff and the band.
It's a classic story of the rise to fame and playing with the best musicians in the world. The latter part of the book is about Jeff's transition from a rock icon to a club owner and jazz trumpeter. Jeff Healey died on March 2, 2008 from sarcoma cancer at 41 years old.
I've been a big fan as a kid as he grew up in South Etobicoke and we would always hear stories that he jammed at local bars. I seen him play once in Halifax and it was without longtime drummer Tom Stephen who explains how his role as manager/drummer ended very poorly with Jeff.

I saw one of the Gramercy shows - while I did enjoy myself - it was disappointing they didn't do much Crowes material. They had this singer who did Chris' vocals pretty well, he looked like the lead singer of Counting Crowes. The show presented itself more as a Marc Ford & Rich Robinson showcase of new material rather than a Crowes Tribute, which makes sense until you realize you'd rather hear them do Crowes material.
Not sure if this band still together, hopefully Crowes brothers will make up and get back together one day.

The Soul Motivators are a premier funk outfit based in Toronto. Rogue Tenant is an art rock band from Toronto that started as a vehicle for the songwriting of Patrick Grant (Twist, Skydome Hotel). Their music is a dynamic and rhythm heavy take on the college rock of The Silver Jews and Yo La Tengo, with nods to post rock and late 70s art punk. They have shared the stage over the past two years with the likes of Wreckless Eric, USA Out Of Vietnam, The Goon Sax, Kal Marks, and Media Jeweler.

Some of takeaways from jambase's ScottB:- Made me feel bad for Trey: The dude obviously went through some shit and was having an existential crisis. Some of the lyrics are amongst the darkest since he became sober. On the other hand some of the lyrics were "Soul Planet"-y.- Musically, it seemed informed by the music he listened to in high school more than any of the stuff that's come out since 1983.- The best tracks were the ones that had multiple segments- Not too much in the way of full band jamming but a number of fantastic Trey solos- Jen and Celisse just sang- I can't believe Trey wrote TWO albums worth of material!- If you get confused, listen to Jon Fishman play. He was a beast last night and I aim to spend one night of the NYC run fully focusing on what he's doing.- The production was much cooler for some songs than it was for others. There was one tune in which a "Lite Brite" version of what Trey was doing on stage was displayed as part of the set behind him. That blew me away.Overall, I really liked it but this will not be for everyone and I'm not going to enjoy seeing "fans" shit on lyrics he wrote about his friend dying.

The Parkdale Community Food Bank is a grass roots organization, founded by volunteers in 2007 and serves 3,000 people each month. Located on King Street West in the heart of Parkdale, the philosophy reflects a strong commitment to a client-based model, where respect, inclusion and the dignity of their members is the first priority. The food bank uses a shopping system, as opposed to the more common hamper system to maximize selection and respect member's various dietary needs. The Food Bank has only one employee and relies on 50 committed volunteers.With no direct funding from any level of government, The Parkdale Community Food Bank raises all of their funds independently and are depend on donations from individuals and events like the annual Bob Marley Birthday Tribute.
House of David GangDubbed Canada's "Reggae Warriors," House of David Gang is an authentic reggae band that delivers late 70s and early 80s-style Jamaican reggae originals and the classic roots reggae songs of greats such as Bob Marley, Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, Gregory Isaacs and Dennis Brown; mixed with folk, soul, calypso, afrobeat and hip-hop influences. The features vocalist King Selah and drummer Jahlin Edwards with guitarists Terell Jervis and Jay Cleary, keyboardist Sam Weller and Fingazz, bassist Snappy Homefry and percussionist/MC SunRay Grennan.The band takes its name from the House of David, an after-hours spot on Queen Street West that was a hotspot for artists from the city's burgeoning Rastafarian and reggae community from the late 80’s until the mid-90’s. After finishing their extensive two month Western Canadian tour this past summer, the band is now focusing on recording new material, working on their new album “Slum” at Slamm Productions in Toronto with the support of an Ontario Arts Council Grant, scheduled to be released mid-2016. While keeping their classic reggae foundation, the direction and feel of the album maintained its roots as well as experimenting with new elements and sounds. RaLionRaLion grew up with a father from Melbourne, Australia and a mother from Kingston Ten, Jamaica, whose influence and musical tastes helped shape RaLion’s deep-seeded love of reggae. While his early musical influences came from listening to original roots, rock, reggae with his family, RaLion became ‘hooked’ when the "Talking Blues" (Bob Marley & The Wailers) CD came out. Burning Spear has also been a constant source of inspiration due to his use of horns. RaLion has been studying music his whole life and has over two decades of live performance and studio recording experience under his belt. Lion started his singing career working with The Resinators, followed by The Dream Band; he has also worked with The Satellites, Arsenals Ska, and Fujahtive and he has recently moved on to focusing on a solo career backed by The Kangaroots Crew. Carol BrownCarol Brown started her musical journey in her early teens as a member of The Loving Sisters ’duo in the late Sixties captivating audiences at Community shows and talent shows in her hometown of Portland, Jamaica. Carol migrated to Canada in 1972 where she continued performing as a solo artist developing her career. She returned to Jamaica a few years later and reunited with her hometown Band who changed their name to The Young Experience with Junior Murvin where she regained her status as resident female singer. The Band toured across the Island show casing in Night clubs, hotel lounges as well as private and community events gaining popularity and building a solid fan base. Carol recorded several singles at that time covering songs like “Touch me Baby” and “Looks like the end” recorded and produced by The Young Experience Band. She returned to Canada in the late Seventies, early Eighties continuing her singing opening and performing on many stage show with several popular artists’ including Yellow Man, Leroy Sibbles, Sugar Minott, Johnny Osborn, Leroy Gibbon, Half Pint. Carol was also performing artist on many other shows throughout Montreal and Toronto accompanying artist such as Alton Ellis, John Holt, Tinga Stewart, Hortense Ellis, Nana McLean, Lord Tanamo, Ken Boothe and Beres Hammond. She recorded and worked with producers Pete Weston Micron Record Leroy Sibbles, Jackie Mittoo, Joe Gibbs among others. Several of Carol’s singles reached the British Reggae charts like “Touch me baby, I wont Hurt your feeling and Feel so good. Her Accolades include awards as Top Female Performer and top Female reggae singer in Canada Reggae Awards in Eighties and Nineties.

Found out the sad news that Kevin Rieth, a musician (bass player), music lover and father of two children from our community has passed away after a long battle with MS.
I met him at an early Come Together Music Festival and found him to be a kindred spirit; happy go lucky and funny.
He had been dealing with immobilization of his condition with such grace and positivity, it's tragic, but in his final post, he says he was happy to make the transition.
