  1. This is sad and bizarre news all-round. I have little doubt that Marketa will do just fine on her own (she's great when she does solo songs in concert, and her songwriting has improved greatly over the years). I'm looking forward to some new Frames; too bad about the timing of this news and what the title above might erroneously imply.
  2. I saw the Antlers when they opened for the National at Massey Hall a few months ago. They were good as were the headliners.
  3. It might, as long as it's not TFC quality "HD".
  4. I can't watch AHL games on TV. Maybe if they are on HD, I may tune in for a beer or five.
  5. A band I've been hyping for years, Purple Hill, are playing the BASEMENT of the Mansion (on Princess Street) tonight! I'll be there with my wife and a few others. It will be a good time. I'm not sure the ticket price, but they rarely charge more than $6-8, but probably less. SHOW STARTS AT 9PM. Here's their MySpace page with links to some reviews (one by me) and an Eye Weekly interview: http://www.myspace.com/thepurplehill http://www.myspace.com/thepurplehill/blog And if you do some digging, I've written a couple of Purple Hill reviews for Jambands.ca along with a few from PH leader Owen Marchildon's other bands: hard rock outfit, From Fiction, and his cosmic garage rock side-project, Rough Skeletons. Marchildon also has a new solo album coming out that is his best work yet. Here's the last Purple Hill review for Jambands: http://www.jambands.ca/sanctuary/showtopic.php?tid/245173/
  6. Shaun of the Dead is great too.
  7. I find Army of Darkness more of a fantasy-adventure comedy, but it's a great film (I saw both Evil Dead II and Army in the theatre when they first were released). The fantastic cult/horror film, The Re-Animator (based on a story by H.P. Lovecraft), has more in common with The Evil Dead II and is well worth picking up (same with Bubba Ho-Tep). Oh, as scary movies go, you can't go wrong with Ringu and The Ring, Alien, Exorcist, Blair Witch, The Shining, The Wicker Man etc... The horror genre is one of favourites.
  8. The Evil Dead, but Evil Dead II is a better film (and freaking hilarious). Frankenstein as classics go and Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein is a mssterpiece of horror-comedy.
  9. Members of the Frames normally perform in the Swell Season. They did at the Massey Hall and Danforth Music Hall shows I attended. Still, I'd love to be at a Frames club show. I heard some brand new Swell Season the other night while sitting on a bar patio and fucking loved it. The magic has just evolved and matured a bit.
  10. This isn't surpring news. Please tell me you two clowns have seen the film, Once.
  11. Phil used to play with his fingers, as seen in Festival Express. But the tone he got by using his flat-pick was a big part of the Dead's sound. Slapping, picking, whatever. All talented bassists can play any style. Entwistle was a great slap-bassist, but he rarely played that way. And I think Victor Wooten is more impressive when he doesn't rely on flashy slapping and popping, but that's just me.
  12. Yes, it is good, and fiercy loyal to the genre. Her concert in support of that album was good too, and I'm a non-fan (my wife dragged me to the Kool Haus and I enjoyed the show).
  13. See what too much Guinness and God can do to you.
  14. Phish's peak and inevitable decline paralleled the peak and decline of the jam genre in general.
  15. Past their prime in 2010? They peaked over 10 years ago.
  16. You gotta love this team. They win back-to-back series vs the fucking Yanks and Rays. the future looks far brighter than it did with JP... and far brighter compared to the Raptors.
  17. I've started playing again as of two years ago. I don't get out as much as I'd like, mostly because I work strange hours (shift work).
  18. Try a temp agency or try the U of T and/or Ryerson job centres. Is she intested in serving?
  19. The techno stuff was hard to stomach on EU. That album also lacked hard-hitters comparable to Z and It Still Moves. However, I did like that they take chances and EU material does play out well in concert. Looking forward to the new album.
  20. I hated The Crane Wife, but I'm hopeful this producer has it going on with recording things live. I also hope that the new album will be better than the almost shark-jump that is Evil Urges. Thankfully, Jim's Monsters of Folk kicked ass.
  21. I think most of us were onboard with KOL earlier in their career (I saw them at Lee's Palace when their first EP came out). But things started to terribly wrong around '06. I think they started reading too many press-clippings along with being influenced by too many differing music styles, and the overall result has ended up sucking ass. Plus, these fuckers exude arrogance.
  22. I bet the Bobby dosed concert sounded far better than a non-bird-shit KOL show.
