  1. The Beatle looks a bit more like George, IHMO.
  2. Awful news. Now there are only 4 people from the first run of Skynyrd still with us.
  3. Who booked this tour, Vince McMahon?
  4. Familiar enough with the current line up that I am still looking forward to it.
  5. Solidly OK lineup. I see a lot I will enjoy, but not much I am super psyched about. Only thing really Bucket List is Deep Purple. Surprising how many artists I have seen before, usually in my 20s (Richard Thompson, Robyn Hitchcock, saw the Tea Party about half a dozen times before they were signed and not at all afterwards).
  6. I had no idea Silver Apples were still performing.
  7. Writing about music is like dancing about architecture.
  8. My standard line on people valuing fretburning over all other factors in guitar solos : judging a guitar solo by its speed is like judging a novel by how well it was typed.
  9. Jeeze, is it mandatory that happen to Mark Kozelek every time he comes to Ottawa? Both times he played Bluesfest, he got hammered with sound from another stage. It is a wonder he even comes back here.
  10. As I said on Facebook, he always seemed to deliver his performances with a large dollop of charm and a pinch of wry wit. I never saw him in a performance I didn't like, he always seemed like a genuine class act. RIP to one of the greats.
  11. Just curious as to why you thought Journey was exceptionally bad. To me, it was high energy, professionally played and well sung (unlike Dr. Hook). It wasn't life changing, but it certainly delivered what I expected from a Journey concert and I had fun. I know everyone around me seemed to be enjoying it, and I dare say if anyone didn't enjoy it at all, then maybe they just don't like Journey (no sin in that, but then why be there in the first place?) I also had fun at Dr. Hook , but I can't say it was great. Ray Sawyer was singing a bunch of song where, for the most part, he was not the original lead singer and for which is voice was completely unsuited. Don Felder at least had the sense to back himself up with musicians who were also strong singers, to give his band a solid group vocal sound that is necessary for the Eagles material he was playing (plus I have always maintained that Felder is a decent singer, just not at the standard of Don Henley ... besides, hey, Don Felder wailing on guitar). Ray Sawyer should have tried something like that, but he instead carried pretty much the whole load himself, and his vocals are just not up to it. Another weak vocalist was Kimberly Perry from the Band Perry. They weren't unprofessionally bad, but I did find her singing voice slight with not much behind it. Certainly not nearly as good as those from Lady Antebellum a few days prior.
  12. I find it a shade ironic that Mark Kozelek has played Bluesfest twice as a solo acoustic set and both times had issues with sound leakage from other stages. Finally they bring him to Folk Festival where there wouldn't be the issues ... and he is playing with Sun Kil Moon.
  13. Super thanks, phobesie, I will check it out.
  14. I thought he was a well known and established political conservative, not Ted Nugent level far right but definitely on the books as a Republican.
  15. Twin Forks looks fun. The rest of the additions have no effect on me one way or the other. Still happy.
  16. Shouldn't be a problem, I saw him sub for Stewart when he was still on the Daily Show and he wasn't being "Stephen Colbert", I thought he did a very good job.
  17. Iain Matthews? Sweet Jebus, now this is one thing I am fully disappointed it isn't coming to Ottawa.
  18. Who the heck are The Gene Clark No Other Band and why have I not heard of them before now?
  19. Anybody know if the John Power listed is the same guy from the La's and Cast? If so, I wouldn't mind checking out his set.
  20. Here's a fun game you can try ... ask them what they think of John Mayall playing Bluesfest. Bask in the blank looks.
  21. More good stuff on that list , including The Iguanas and Thornetta Davis. She sang on Big Chief's classic Mack Avenue Skullgame ... great set of pipes on that woman.
  22. Anyone think the past problems with Ottawa Country festivals are leading to high profile Country artists coming to Bluesfest? Blake Shelton, The Band Perry, Lady Antebellum, Darius Rucker . And I get to check off my bucket list getting to see one of my all time favorite male singers, Gary Brooker with Procol Harum & The NAC Orchestra. I wonder if they will play Conquistador?
