  10. I thought this was a really great article as to why we should care about the Occupy movement, and it's from a Canadian angle http://amymacpherson.wordpress.com/2011/10/11/the-occupy-movement-a-detailed-explanation/

Also on the bill is Toronto's The Mercy Now (http://themercynow.com/). Doors open at 9:00 and the ticket price should be more than reasonable.

  14. A few years back I made a mixtape for myself that I titled "Music For Drinks With Little Umbrellas". It was a mix of music that was either directly or influenced by African, Caribbean, and Latin music. I have shared it with friends over the years and they all really seemed to enjoy it. Last week I got inspired to make Volume 2. I figured I should share both mixtapes with you guys. I hope you like them. 15. tomorrow wraps up early (specifically 1:30pm), need to get Jack back to Toronto. There are and will be books to sign at all the constituency offices though. If you aren't in an NDP riding I could probably find out for you the closest office where you can go and sign a book.
  16. I just got back from the Hill, us staffers had a reserved time to pay our respects, just after the MPs and dignitaries and just before the general public. I took me over two hours to get through the line, sign the book of condolences, pay respect to Olivia and Jack's family, and have my last visit with Jack (in the physical sense). When I left Center Block the line for the general public flowed down the lane way, and wrapped around East Block. I never saw the end of it as I made my way back to the office. If anyone is planning on going to pay their respects I suggest you might want to go earlier than later. (also, after Olivia and family greeted us they then went through the newly formed line of general public mourners, even going outside. Class act all the way.)
  17. Any idea what the hours of operation are for members of the public? Public hours are: Wednesday from 12:30pm-8pm Thursday from 9 am-1:30pm And then in Toronto at Toronto City Hall on Friday 9am-8pm and Saturday 9am-11am
  18. I have not heard.. I'll post here once I know though.
  19. ok.. last update (for a while).. I promise. Jack will indeed lie in state in the main foyer of the House of Commons starting tomorrow at 12:30 until Thursday. His funeral will be at Roy Thompson Hall at 2:00pm on Saturday. Constituency offices will be open for guests to sign their condolences as well as we will continue to have our site set up to receive them as well.
  20. I just wanted to point out something about that Broadbent Institute donation form. I was hoping this was going to be resolved by this morning but it looks like it's taking a bit more time. When you fill that form out it will appear as if you are donating to the party itself. You may even get a thank you message from our director Brad Lavigne thanking you for your election time donation. Embarrassing as this is for us, this is due to our quick response yesterday, and due to the fact that The Broadbent Institute is not yet set up to handle fundraising donations (this has all happened so fast). Please trust me when I tell you that all monies received through the form that I have put in that link will go to The Broadbent Institute and not the NDP. We are collecting and holding onto that money on their behalf until they are set up to receive it. The election time thank you message will hopefully be replaced in the next hour (how embarrassing). Thanks for your understanding.
  21. I try hard to stay non-partisan posting here, because I know it's not a place to discuss politics and such. I'm sure I've failed in the past and will likely fail in the future. I did not post anything yesterday just because I was far too busy (for those of you who don't know, I'm a communications officer for the federal NDP). There will indeed be a state funeral in Toronto on Saturday afternoon. There is some discussion about the possibility of Jack's body lying in state here in Ottawa this week, though nothing has been finalized/confirmed yet. I'm sure you have all read Jack's letter to Canada by now, but if you haven't you can read it here: http://www.ndp.ca/letter-to-canadians-from-jack-layton If you wish you can send your condolences to Jack's family here: http://www.ndp.ca/express_your_condolences Jack's family has asked that in lieu of flowers, and to continue the work of making Canada a better place, donations be made to the Broadbent Institute, in memoriam, which you can do here: http://www.ndp.ca/inmemory Please excuse any rough edges you may come across when filling out the condolences form or making the donation. As with the rest of Canada the news of Jack's passing came as a complete shock to us here in the federal office. We were operating in that state of shock and grief, as well as still operating on a reduced staff due to it being the summer and people on vacation. We will be smoothing out the edges on these things over the next day or two now that we have everything up. Sorry for the lengthy post, but I figured at least some of you may be interested in those links.
  22. I'm disappointed this album doesn't include Can You Picture That.. I think that might be my fav Muppet tune.
